Russo Decommitted

Considering the coaching change and the direction Coach Ash is moving regarding the offensive philosphy Russo's talent was not as good a match. I think this is good for both RU and Russo in the long run. I wish him nothing but the best for the way he has handled himself through the entire process.

Probably for the best - The existence of Russo was undoubtedly going to be skewing the direction of the offensive plans - Ash clearly wants to follow his vision for crating a highly competitive team - and not start off by muddling his vision - & to optimize the use of Russo may have been at cross-purposes with the vision.

Yeah, really. Did you watch our O-line last year? What do you think the reason Rettig never got a chance to play in all those blowout games? He can't move! Laviano could roll out, which at least gave him a chance to get a throw off. We don't need two OL recruits, we need like six that can play this coming season. How many of those on the recruit list?

No, you said "we don't have any committed in this class." So you said we don't have any B1G caliber OL recruits. Your words. Crapping on our recruits is bad form. Rettig seemed to move just fine in the limited time he played.

I've always been one of the few on this board that didn't think he was very good, but everyone else took Trent Dilfers word as gold and thought he was the messiah, he will be a backup somewhere

just because you dumb shit doesn't make it true. Kid doesn't go from nobody to elite 11 qb if he's not good, not to mention he backs it up on the field as well.

I don't think so. He's very good and he's likely to do very well wherever he goes. Good luck to the young man.

Good luck to Anthony. I thought it was stated that Ash really wanted to keep Russo and was immediately going to meet with him. I guess that didn't work out too well.

I was not aware you are going to a dual threat offense. If that is the case, then this is good for everyone. Trust me, I know.

Will be interesting to see how this kid pans out as he wasn't a very hot commodity and barely moved within the QB rankings despite being a camp stud.

I love Russo as a PRO-STYLE QB....but, Rutgers now runs a zone read that thrives with a dual threat QB.

Best of Luck to him
I read throughout his recruiting that he had a strong arm, good ability to read the defense, yet was not recruited much because of his speed.

It sucks for us and no amount of rationalization changes that. But we need to build up the O and D lines more than we need a QB right now. With not one or two great recruits, but with a dozen in the next couple years. That should be the primary focus.

Of course all the other positions are very important and it would be awesome to find a great dual threat QB in the next couple years. But build a great O line and it can turn a half decent QB into a star. Build a great D line and it can turn a half decent set of LBs and DBs into stars.

I've said it before, but IMO it's worth repeating... Ash's recruiting motto should be: it's the lines stupid.

His playing style isn't what Ash wants. What role is different for a QB between a pro style and spread style? To me, a QB reads the defense and makes the throws. The 'style' doesn't matter.

you can operate Ash's offense without a running QB, Baylor hasn't had any problems replacing RG3 with a bunch of immobile white kids

Ok you really need to know what your watching before you pronounce an offensive unit as sucking. If you may have noticed our offensive scheme did nothing to confuse defenses. Basically we bunched everything going for max pro, giving the defense the perfect opportunity to cause havoc. If you noticed most teams blitzed and blitzed a lot because our QB refused and was incapable of throwing the ball into tight spaces. So the defenses blitzed more. The OL never knew who was coming or how many and from where. They got no help from TE's who couldn't block worth a damn. Our 3rd down back(Goodwin) was basically a matador back there. Why you would go max pro when you have TE's and a 3rd down RB who can't block is beyond me.

Of course there was another direction to go but our coaches refused this option. Spread them out, go 3 and 4 wide this way you limit the amount of players capable of blitizing. The break downs were more than just the OL there are some capable bodies out there. Mueller, Miller, Denman(should not be playing tackle, good mauler but footwork is too slow). Also the young guys Heeman, Applefield showed good promise. So no we don't need 6 in this class that can play right away. Just proper scheme's to combat defense's and RB's who aren't afraid to stick their heads into a block.

What does their race have to do with it?
Shouldn't matter but their starting QB Russell this season is pretty athletic
from Baylor's website:
Fourth-year junior... Tall, quick, athletic quarterback, listed as starter on post-spring depth chart... Career totals of 1,231 yards and 11 passing TDs, also 332 yards and six rushing TDs, in 15 games as backup in 2013 and 2014... 2014 pass efficiency rating of 164.6 led Big 12... Projected 2015 preseason All-Big 12 by Phil Steele (second team) and Athlon (third team)... Timed at 4.49 in 40-yard dash... Vertical jump measured at 41.8, broad jump at 10-feet, 4-inches.

Remember when the mods wrote we would not recruit another QB for 2016.......hmmmm. Would the staff pass on a QB for this season being so few late options?

Do you people just pull things out of your rectum and post them?
2012 - Nick Florence - 568 rush yards, 10 rush TD
2013 - Bryce Petty/ Seth Russell - 356 rush yards, 17 rush TD
2014 - Petty/ Russell - 286 rush yards, 9 rush TD
2015 - QB committee - 712 rush yards, 11 rush TD

So what makes them immobile?

No other P5 offers. Below average athleticism. This kid is no Tom Savage. Ash will get a 2 star PJ Walker type and we will be fine. QB in the class won't see the field for a few years anyway. This only hurts from a momentum standpoint. And that's only until the next guy commits..

Hurts more than that. Kid is a good prospect. He was tearing up the camps.

I was under the impression he has been decommitted since Flood was fired. He will be a great college QB in a system that fits him. Good luck to him.

Gotta laugh at some people in this thread. Some were the very people who have been saying he isn't any good, and now are pissed he is gone.

Eh. Is he a good prospect? Maybe. Was he better than Weigers? Don't think so. Did it hurt to lose Weigers? Eh not really. Fact is with the current depth on the roster someone like Russo, who is not physically ready to play at this level, was not necessarily guaranteed to see the field.

A lesser recruited, more athletic QB, of which we don't have on the roster, has a much better chance of climbing the depth chart. Now would I rather have Russo AND an athletic guy? Yeah. But that's not how QB recruiting works.

I won't lose any sleep over this one. Writing was on the wall.

Russo seemed like a good kid and prospect, but no one player is bigger than the program. Fact is that decommits happen when there's a coaching change. Such is life. We move on and move forward.

I thought the same. I mentioned back in November that he was talking to other schools, notably UCLA.

Haskins is another pro-style qb that has zero interest in RU. What would doing that accomplish?
Stop hating. I didn't say that they would, I am saying it wouldn't hurt to take a shot. And how do you know if he doesn't have interest. Maybe the spread is intriguing to him. You never know.

All those QBs were dual threat, except for Petty, who was pro-style. Yet in 2013, he rushed for 209 yards and scored 14 TDs rushing.

if ash is going to run the osu offense that is not close to the baylor offense

No. Don't want another situation like Schiano had where you have 2 scholarship QBs in fall camp. I know we have 4 on the team right now, but who knows what they will do with change in system. Bring in a QB every year.
