Rutgers’ Corey Sanders talks Adidas Nations, NBA dreams

I'm a young person too and if someone who was supposed to be a team leader said my team wasn't doing any better this year before we played a single game, I would call him exactly what I called him.

Personally I don't care if and when Sanders leaves this year. His comments in this article might as well have been "will we be better? Probably not but as long as I score I can go to the NBA so it doesn't matter".

Yes he's the best player on our team. Yes we wouldn't win more than 9 games without him this year. Yes he's the best talent we've had since Mack. And yes his attitude is piss poor. Time to face the music..Corey probably doesn't give a shit about Rutgers. Corey gives a shit about Corey. And that's why I called it like I see it.

Well, that's just sad. Take it back to the football boards ...lol. We tend to have civil conversations here, even when we disagree and there are a lot of disagreements.

While I'm sure the quotes are accurate, I too would consider whether Zagoria, who I don't particularly care for, chose to phrase questions in a certain way, and whether he was maybe aware of how he was portraying Corey by framing the interview as he did.

I would not be surprised for the staff to start preparing for the future. With that said, best to Sanders. I hope the kid accomplishes his dreams.

Corey Sanders is not a 2 guard. He can't shoot and has never had to move without the ball EVER.

He is a guy that needs the ball in his hands to be effective. His asset is being able to beat people off the dribble and finish in transition.

Might be forced to. Not an option. You don't have to be able to shoot lights out. Similar to how McClung is used on his AAU team.

Oh with this NBA.

His chances of being a legit NBA player are only a wee bit slightly better than mine (which is of course 0%)

Time for my "get off my lawn" moment. Kids-- and I'm talking to 99.9% of HS bball players--YOU AREN'T GOING TO PLAY IN THE NBA. Stop. I understand having goals to shoot for but unless you are the best of the best of the best of the best you have no shot. Good to have dreams but be realistic--prepare for a life in which you will not be an NBA player.

It is nearly impossible to make the NBA. Just look at all of the stellar, and I mean stellar college player who never get a sniff. And those are the best of the best already. its no longer good enough to be a top USA college player. You are competing now with the entire world.

If you want to play pro sports (in America at least), don't go into basketball. It isn't happening. Enjoy and cherish your college bball experience.
I disagree. I think if Cory listens to this staff and becomes "Coach able " and if he stays his Sr. Year he has a 50/50 shot at the NBA. Couple of big if's though. JMHO.

The fire inside Corey is also on full blast now that his BFF Bake got a guaranteed deal as a 2nd round pick. He should learn from his best friend though and learn some humility.

Based on what has happened the last 2 years I seriously doubt Sanders would come back to Rutgers for his senior year. Its professional basketball at some level or starting a career in rap music.

Dwayne Bacon is 6-6. If Corey was 6-6, he'd definitely be drafted, too,... and it's highly unlikely he would have ever played for Rutgers.

“You know cause everybody be overlooking me because they think I’m the best person on one of the sorry teams or whatever. My team ain’t doing so good, so it kind of make me” look not so good.

Not based in reality.
That's what Sanders hears from his boys in Lakeland. Unfortunately, Sanders is still listening to the wrong people
This is the sad part to hear. One wonders whether these folks actually care for his long term well being vs just their ticket to ride his stardom. Interview gives some insight on this given the comment and his response. Hope Pikiell can help him grow as an individual.

What's your point? All he's thinking right now is that his BFF that he grew up with and whom he believes is at the same level as, has made it to the NBA.

Oh Corey. You didn't get drafted because you're not good enough right now. It's really that simple. But good job putting down your teammates. I'm sure NBA scouts looking at the last few fringe guys will take your attitude into account.

Disaster scenario. If you're a SG and you're not a great shooter you need to be able to score regularly another way like Mathis or Keldon Johnson

If McClung or Sanders can't blow by someone or go downhill to score how are they going to score?

Neither are currently reliable shooters at their current level. Sanders, currently, isn't making FTs at a high enough rate.

OMG YAAAAASSSSS! FINALLY!

I waited and waited and waited and it finally happened. I've been like :popcorn:someone will eventually get it.

I thought it might happen when Bacon declared for the draft and Sanders tested the waters again. Nope.

Oooh this is good, I feel like I won on a $1 scratch off.

@soundcrib said it and they are EXACTLY correct.[cheers]

It's difficult for me to express how I am feeling right now. One of y'all figured it out.

I KNEW someone would figure it out eventually.

You Go @soundcrib

Russ - love your posts and really appreciate all the insights and the consistent love you give this board. And yes, you're right.... but c'mon now. You're better than that ...

Point is, the boat at Rutgers is not going to wait for Sanders to show he wants to fully commit to it. He may not have an option. A lot of people have had their spot taken before. Right now Baker is probably spending time at point guard, and I bet he can shoot free throws at .720% and up. Layups, back door plays. McClung has not played his senior year in HS yet, so I would not comment on his play. By the time he gets here, I think he will be an average to above average shooter.

He seems very bitter about still playing college ball.I He commented last season just how well he was coached by this staff and how he couldn't believe the importance of defense and watching film and things he hadn't prioritized before and how it made both himself and the team so much better.

Corey will play professional basketball somewhere because he has talent but last time I checked, this is a team sport. I was really pumped for his junior season but if he is going to lead this team it means Rutgers will have a better season than last year and an attitude that if they put the same effort into every game, they should be able to compete with anyone on their schedule.

I hope he changes his approach. There's nobody who doesn't want him to succeed but we are also Rutgers fans and along the way we want him to make everyone around him better so we can have a winning season. That's what he missed in that article.

I'm not sure I follow you. What Soundcrib said is on the money. I watched it for three years here in Florida. Sanders followed Bacon everywhere until Dwayne went to Oak Hill.

Dwyane was drafted but only one team invited Corey to workout. Realizing that he wouldn't be drafted he came back to school.

Corey needs to stop focusing on what is going on with Dwayne and focus on himself. Go to class and go to the gym. Work on his weaknesses, play to his strengths, and ask someone in the athletic department to coach him on interviews

Kinda has to start with the player taking more initiative and being willing to listen and become 100% coachable not just in basketball, but life....I'm fairly confident he has all of those things at his disposal here....talent tends to override being coachable at all levels, so we'll see what happens.

A lot of what he said was very poor, and simply not accurate at all. Fultz got drafted from a horrible team. If the skills are there, you get drafted.

Sanders didn't get drafted because he does not shoot an efficient 3, can't go left, and as someone who will get fouled a lot, he cannot make free throws above .750%.

It seems like Sanders has been very selfish, and not honest with why he doesn't get drafted.
I agree with you. He seemed selfish and somewhat blamed his teammates for diminishing his draft status.

As many have pointed out the NBA is a pipe dream for Corey. There are probably 50 better guards in college ball right now. If he had a great jump shot but his handle was a little weak I would be more inclined to say he can improve. However I don't believe he can/will improve his shot enough to be an effective NBA player, especially given his height.

After reading that article, my first thought was we are really going to miss the contributions of Nigel Williams this season. He was an all-timer.

The Sanders quotes are a bad look. Bumping that FT shooting to around 80% will do much more for his NBA stock than the team winning a couple more games - although that would help us win more games, too. I'll focus on the end of the article where he says he is going to do what he needs to do to help us win more.

You're 100% right. My comment was towards the childish passive aggressive way you went about patronizing the board.

Your take on Corey is spot on and the information you share is invaluable. So thank you for that!

It is an interview like this that makes you wonder what kind of NBA dream pitch did Eddie Jordan present to him during recruiting.

Found out a bit more about how this interview was conducted today...And the writer should be ashamed of himself.

Doesn't absolve Corey completely of course, but I feel somewhat better about the content of this piece.

As I said before Corey is a good kid..Bright and engaging...Totally likeable and easy to root for. Hoping we get to see more of that side of him soon!

I responded earlier in this thread......that the answers attributed to Corey Sanders sounded strange. Like they were written with an assumption of how someone would speak.

is he related to that player we have talked about a lot here who never played, never wore a uniform but is a legend. Forgot his name!

I will give a lot of credit to Pikiell and staff if they can manage this well. The issue is going to be when Corey tries to use this year as his personal NBA audition, and gets benched for it. You can see it coming, and if he plays selfish, you know he will be on the bench. Its his right to be in FL, but I really wish he stayed in NJ. They aren't helping him down there.

Really ? So, you know he's going to play selfish and get benched. Got any stock picks for me ?

If you follow him on Twitter, along with Vinny Vetrone and their crew...the sense of entitlement is astounding. Making millions as a baller/rapper/whatever is inevitable, a foregone conclusion. Bacon getting paid was just the capper. Hope Corey can stay eligible for the season bc he certainly doesn't care about school if he doesn't care about his team.

I have been following Corey on Twitter since sometime in 2013. I almost unfollowed him last year because he was tweeting a lot of things I wasn't interested in and he was tweeting things that made me question his commitment to his basketball career. I had mixed feelings about unfollowing a Florida kid so I chose to mute him instead.

If you're not familiar with that it means I still follow him but I don't see his Tweets.

When hoping his attitude/work ethic improve, let's just remember Corey idolizes Allen Iverson, a man still getting suspended in his 40s for not showing up to events he's getting paid for.
