Basketball Rutgers Basketball outlasts Penn State in wild, fast-paced affair

Anyone notice how Rutgers and PSU seem to always start in a blowout one way or the other, only for the team losing to claw their way back and just come up short with the exception of the win we had there 2 years ago?

Did anyone notice? On one of the last possessions Harper's foot touched the mid court line while dribble in the front court. It should have been a violation. I mention this because he was flirting with that scenario about 5 times in the game

Okay... bad broadcast with few replays on Peacock.. but good to see Rutgers is learning how to close out a game. Given recent history it looked bad.. but the boys pulled it out. Baby steps.

Pike should run a few more sets in 2nd half for 3pt shooters.. Bailey and Harper get worn down when they are the focal point of every possession
Yes.. I was thinking that maybe this is why we run out of steam at end of games.. our stars are sucking wind. Maybe we need to spell them more often.

This reminded me so much of the last regular season game in 2022. Senior night for Ron, Caleb, and Geo. Had a 15 point first half lead. PSU eventually came all the way back it in the second half but we survived. Cliff had a huge rebound late and I think Caleb the go ahead FTs.

Playing a tougher pre conference schedule certainly helped. Now time to beat the Hall.
Pike adjustments starting Davis on Baldwin and benching Martini paid off. And a better defensive performance than we have seen. Foul shots almost cost the win.

Random musings:

f Penn state x 1 million

Derkack is driving me nuts.

Great W

Ace did all the dirty stuff tonight you need to win. Need that from him the rest of the way

absolutely hated that Jeremiah Williams shot at the end. Horrific.

Gratifying to take the W

Their star Baldwin played 38 mins. and only came off the court because he got his 4th foul. Harper played 34 mins. and Bailey 32 mins.. So, you're telling me that psu's strength and conditioning training is so far superior that Harper can't play 4 less minutes and Bailey 6? If so, we need to fire our strength and conditioning coach tonight.

he was all net at the end of the 1st half and was a wide open look - didn't have a problem with it
Ya. That was a nice make. But up 2, 30 seconds to go, 3 feet behind the three pt line… I hate that as a shot. Theres nobody on this roster I like shooting that. Theres maybe 1 guy in scarlet knights history I like there — and it’s Ron Harper Jr

Much better defensive effort this game. Keep this same rotation going forward. Hayes and Acuff have earned more minutes.
Effort may have better, but still allowed 76 points. Thought there were too many easy drives to the basket in the 2nd half.

Just got to run a lot more in practice.

He sets up way to close to the half court line consistently

Be careful what you wish for in a game Rutgers was struggling from the line
Once it gets inside 10 seconds and if RU is up 3, foul, put them on the line and don’t let them shoot a 3. It seems more times than not that teams hit big threes to tie us. Baldwin’s three looked good, hate when Pike lets teams shoot threes to tie game late. Foul and don’t even let them shoot the three. There is a double edged sword also as the opponent you foul and prevent from shooting a three also has to make its two free throws just to keep pace and still have a shot to win. RU was not making free throws tonight, I’ll give you that, but they are a good free throw shooting team, it’s one of this team’s strengths.

76,way below their average this year. Make 4-5 more foul shots and wouldn’t be in doubt.
Defense still giving up 76 and our missing ft's were my 2 big takeaways from this game.

Now admittedly my base line for defense is the previous how many years under Pike where we were a superb defensive team, but if this team is to live up to it's preseason billing, it needs to continue to improve defensively.

and did you see Baldwin miss every shot late?

and did you realize our stars are true frosh while Baldwin is a senior?

really foolish hot take on my comment. THINK

Baldwin isn't really a good example either way...he's a freak that nearly played every minute after Kanye Clary got kicked off the team last year (in the last 14 games, he played the full 40 nine times, and never less than 37 minutes).

And even with that, Ace Baldwin was gassed at the end of each half. That game last night was fast paced, physical, etc. Rhoades really need to find more opportunities to get him breaks (we had been using Carter to back him up, but guess Rhoades was afraid of letting last night get away).

About the energy thing.. here is another angle.

When you work hard on defense, the answer is to use clock on offense and rest up a bit. Swing the ball and make their D work.

In some of those Vegas games you'd see Harper at point with the ball slowing things down if a transition basket was not in the cards. But A&M doubled him, harassed him, got him off the ball. Maybe when someone else is at point, they don't help give Harper and Bailey some rest with the ball on offense. Maybe those guys who aren't playing 35 minutes push too hard on offense when a transition basket is not in the cards.
