Rutgers fans still too nice to other B1G fans

Ehhhh when the Iowa fans came here after their luck win being obnoxious for days they deserve us ripping them on their board after this smack down.

There were a few fans giving us props but most of them are trashing our program and our state. If they want to go there then it isn't very Jersey like to turn the other cheek. You start it we end it is more Jersey style.

What does Iowa have anyway? Corn and Steve King? It's a fly over nothing forgotten state for a reason that has no business thinking they can look down on Jersey.

If you are playing the "name all 50 states" game and you're stuck on 49... You're probably forgetting insignificant Iowa

Be the bigger man (or woman).

Otherwise it brings everyone down into the muck, and civial discussion with opposing fanbases impossible.

One of our posters here went on the Iowa boards and basically apologized for us being ahead DURING the game. Talk about self-loathing RU fans. That was more embarrassing than any of the well-deserved trash talk over there. Most of the Iowa fans are condescending, whiny crybabies. I read most of the opposing boards during games and they one of the worst towards us, especially considering we've dogwalked them 2 of the last 3 and their only win was a miracle shot.

The guy taunts us. I don’t enjoy that.
I am guilty of many wise ass remarks that probably aren't as funny as they are in my own mind. Russ might not have great local knowledge but I appreciate his perspective as someone knowledgeable of the game, eventhough I sometimes don't enjoy it.

Can you please define ,"Jersey style"? I'm from NJ and growing up we were respectful no matter what happened. We didn't let others control or dictate our emotions. Sure seems like some on here are making up a Jersey thing that exists in small enclaves and manifests as over the top immaturity.

Russ is obviously very knowledgeable but once in a while that passive aggressive sneaky condescending tone comes out because it's Rutgers. Which is normal coming from anybody outside our area.

It’s just bad form and frankly unprofessional to come here and basically mock something he doesn’t understand. I’m sure he’s not familiar with that speech and where it was given but some of us love that speech. Rutgers is a unique place for better or for worse, and JPO nailed it.

Making light of that speech is like making fun of the Leonard Leap. That doesn’t play in these parts.

Some of you might remember the old RU board in the BE, when SHU idiots would infest the RU board. There were some that were good guys and added content like SPK and Source. But too many were like Chickenpox, or whatever his name was. Little Red Schoolhouse and much nastier stuff. And the clowns from Syracuse. Remember the guy that would post before a game with Syracuse--The 'Cuse is in the house. Be very, very afraid? Or that 'Nova kid who would go on many different boards just to flame? What's the point? One anonymous poster trying to stir up other anonymous posters? Just can't see it. You are not defending Rutgers or the wonderful state of New Jersey. Be classy and stay off opponents' boards unless it is to say something positive. Let some of their fans be unclassy if they so choose. Doesn't mean we have to retaliate. Beating them on the field or on the court and not trash talking is the best revenge.

I remember those characters. Remember Rider Guy (aka Jim Purisky)? The Maven from Redmen.com back in the day was the best read for college hoops in the tri State area.

Eh. Knowledgeable fans know when a team is turning it around. I don’t like any other big 10 team but I’m not going on their boards like we have them on ours. I’m just really very happy for our kids and our coach. He’s worked hard to get kids who can play at an elite level and he’s very classy win or lose.

I only hope our football program can follow.

Here is what I think certain people don't get. People around the country want us to act like a-holes. That just reinforces so many people's perceptions of NJ. Arrogant, loud-mouthed, obnoxious etc.

We need to be better.

IU fan here..........

I spend a lot of time on other BT teams' boards. I thought you might be interested in some impartial comments....

What I've noticed is that there's always a board personality that develops for good or for bad..........as an example Penn State's board after the Paterno problems really got to be a nasty place. It's not as bad now, but it's still unpleasant both because of the PSU posters and posters from other programs that come in with their nasty comments. Until then, I had always thought it was a pretty good board to follow.

Anyway....as an outsider I've always enjoyed reading your basketball & football boards. With respect to basketball. I've always seen a lot of potential because there has always been very solid fan interest for the position you've been in. Pike appears to be a great fit.....your team has earned its recent success. Also, you have a pretty solid recruiting base...........

As for football.....again I see a solid fan base. Not like PSU or OSU but a lot of interest given the history. I'd agree that Ash isn't the right guy, but eventually you guys will get it going, with your recruiting base and fan interest. I really don't see any reason why Rutgers can't be a perennially a top 50% program, at the same level as MSU. Iowa, Wisconsin........just need to pick the right guy after Ash & get the BT $ coming in.

I've all so followed your 'wrestling/minor sports' board. Although the BT teams are almost all pretty good in wrestling, your level of fan involvement is unusual. I know that there nowhere near as many wrestling fans in Indiana as there are in PA & NJ. So, RU should be a top 4 program going forward. I also don't see any particular reason RU can't at least be competitive in M & W soccer & LAX. Unfortunately, I think it will be a long time before RU can be competitive in certain other sports, like baseball, softball, and volleyball. You guys will need major facility upgrades in those sports.....they can't be fixed with good coaching hires alone.

The thing that means the most to me is that the announcers and opposing writers are not throwing Rutgers under the bus. You know that the other team's players have respect for our team or their coaches have not done their job. We are no longer just an auto W for anyone.
The simple fact is that RU is a scrappy team that comes to play. Fans can say anything they want, but a fact is a fact.
As I have already heard on TV, "who wants to play Rutgers?"
That, my friend is the highest form of a compliment.

It's really nice. I'm not even anywhere near the Midwest but just moving a few miles south and a few miles west a few times I began to notice a difference. Another good thing is that it's not in diametric opposition to being direct with people when there's a problem. Can (at least try to) have the best of both worlds.
Not sure how this thread turned into an anti-Russ thread? I for one enjoy the information he brings us. I don't expect him to be a rah rah Rutgers guy.

Interesting to see some things on here.

Was always an assumption, but when you actually read it...like I said...interesting, almost “hmmmm” like if you know what I mean.

Russ go back to covering your alma mater aka Communtiy college basketball ... people like to act like our first year in the B1G didn’t exist and the sanctions that happened combined with the severe, severe lack of funds compared to our opponents, forced a terrible hire, and that the current state is the “true” Rutgers football and the last 15 years didn’t happen. Newsflash: it isn’t, and once we get on an even playing field $$ (which is coming whether the big ten fans like it or not) and can make a real hire, it’s game over and they all know it. So enjoy it now idiot. “Eternal whipping boy” is a fantasy that will come crashing down

Who cares what others think? When we win they’ll figure it out. We always thought the Bonnies couldn’t win until one day they did.

We caught up in three years. Still a few we haven’t beaten yet but that will also change as quickly as next season.

Rutgers hit a hard patch for basketball. Although Rutgers hasn't been to the dance since the early 90s, we still have some solid team during the Gary Waters era in the early 2000s. Support for basketball is slowly starting to return to that level. The RAC can be a house of horrors for visiting teams. Just ask former Big East coaches. Here is a video of how crazy the RAC can be:

There is an image problem with Football. People outside of the program think Rutgers has s*cked forever. Prior to Terry Shea (Chris Ash the first) in the late 90s, the program was average. We weren't bad, but we weren't great either. Rutgers could compete with teams. Schiano created an atmosphere of respect and excitement while winning.

Even after Schiano left, Flood maintained excitement in the program as he drove it into the ground with shady sh*t behind the scenes.

Ash has really done a number on the program.

The lack of success in men soccer is crazy. Rutgers used to be really good at soccer. Women soccer is good right now. They just have to get past the first or second round the NCAA tourney. LAX is good. They are usually ranked, but the postseason setup for LAX is suspect. Rutgers hasn't helped itself with some WTF games to hurt its resume.

I did enjoy the civil pregame thread on the Iowa board. I hope to keep that going for all the games (well maybe not with PSU)

That being said once they start trashing our program and our state in an extremely disrespectful manner its unrealistic to think people won't respond especially on a message board where even the littlest shrimp can say whatever they want
