Football Rutgers Football RB Kyle Monangai to sit out 2024 Rate Bowl

Here we have it - the single most inaccurate statement ever made about the current state of college athletics .

what is this guy - the NCAAs version of Baghdad Bob?
Seems a little harsh from someone who agrees that players like this don’t owe anyone anything in a bowl decision just because they receive NIL money, which is what I was responding to.

Just saying - you don’t actually think the $ these kids are getting has ANY relation to the value of their name image and likeness ?!?!?

It’s straight up pay-to-play -ie, the market value of what they contribute on the field

Two very different things.

Is what it is. I can’t change it.

The fact he ain’t playing - I assume it’s not violating any contract he’s under for his $ (and that’s not even our concern anyway) and as far as his obligation to RU (which i believe we as fans do have a say)…

I’m good. He’s contributed more than 99% of players

Kyle has been playing with broken ribs since the USC game, he needs to heal up before the combine

This. It’s a different situation from the norm. Kyle is on the sideline coaching the rest of the team. All signs point to Greg being a part of the decision. The last thing Greg wants is this game to hurt Kyle’s draft chances. It’s not good for anyone. He’s about to go 2-2 on NFL RB grooming. Not blowing that is more important than the Rate bowl in the long run.

Kinda torn here. I understand the economics. I also have less sympathy now that they're paid. I kinda see it as a contract now. You got your free education and your NIL money. Now play the game.
I second this. The athletes want their money but are stipulating when and how they will participate? That's BS. Now if KM has broken ribs, I can see that as a reason to sit out. Otherwise they are paid to participate.
Kyle passed up NIL money in the offseason to stay here. So, no. He doesn't need to play the game.
But he did get money, right? Just not a higher payout elsewhere?
No matter how you slice it, they are not paid by you or any other fans or businesses to play in this or any other game. NIL is compensation for the payers commercial use of name and likeness. That’s it.
You really think NCAA athletes are getting paid for their name, image, likeness? They are getting paid for their ability to perform on the field. Period.

Either you make a commitment to your teammates (and them to you) or you don't.
Anyone who agrees with you is a complete ass--those who know the reality of his injuries especially his ribs, knows his sacrifices during the season.

And don't let anyone tell you it wasn't his ribs it was and anyone with a brain knows the time it takes to get over that injury/pain.

Please stop. He played many a game this season hurt where if he wanted to he could’ve easily played the injury card on any NIL contract. He had no interest in doing that. This is a situation where the combine is coming up and he needs to heal his body. The stakes are far greater than the importance of playing in the Rate bowl.

Understandable, this decision. It's the nature of this "business." And it is very much a business. Besides, KM's done so much to deserve opting out from this game. And it's great to see him making the trip to encourage his teammates.

Stop what? Expecting someone to fulfill what they were paid to do? There's nothing wrong with that. And I did address if in fact he has broken ribs.

He traveled with the team and didicated his time to help prep the team. His coach very likely told him to sit out. Greg wants what’s best for Kyle and playing in this game is definitely not that. I’m struggling to see how anyone doesn’t see this?

While I’m not a fan of the move, as it is what it is.

But I totally disagree with this. If they want insurance they can buy their own policy.
While that is true it is not unusual for certain people to have insurance purchased for them.

There were several options each side had. To me none of them make either party the bad guy.

Minn was a fun game to watch this year because KM was out and coaches were forced to run a juiced passing game.
While it would be fun to see KM play (and I'm sure he would like to) the game should still be pretty interesting.
Coaches have had weeks to plan and GS is pretty good with bowls.
Kansas St is 16th for rushing defense and 78th for passing defense so game should be good for AK/receivers

Last year we lucked out when Miami had 16 senior starters skip our game with them to get ready for a possible NFL career. They were one of only I believe 4 teams in the country that had the same five offensive linemen start every game before the bowl game. Four of those five starters missed our game. Now Kyle might sit out. He is only one guy. The team we played last year was like a JV team rather than a varsity team. It happens so people shouldn't be upset at Kyle. He did a lot for RU and now must worry about his possible future. Times have changed.

Their ability may determine NIL amount but it’s just how boosters can legally funnel aspirational money. It doesn’t actually obligate players. NIL by rule can not be pay be play. It can’t even be contingent on continued enrollment.

That's great. Now you can pay back the $100,000 free education. Then it's all square and you can give him the day off.

Personally I don't consider scholarships for playing CFB as freebies.
Its a year round pursuit and includes a lot of wear and tear.
I was once in a game where 3 guys left a game with knee injuries - two had their season's end.
HS practice is fun - college practices are much harder

1. Does Rutgers have the funds to pay for the insurance? Colorado iirc is providing it for either the whole team or graduating seniors. With 2 Top 10, possibly Top 5 picks, even if it measures based off first contract numbers it's going be expensive. Probably high 6 figures for the two and 7 it's the whole team.

2. If he does have broken ribs might it best for all involved if he sits out?

I know enough about insurance to know that I don't know about insurance.
They get you in between the lines and having insurance doesn't mean you can get paid.

I know the NCAA has a catastrophic insurance policy but I dont know how that relates to bowl games and any NFL money lost. With Shedeur and Hunter Travis its pretty much a given where they will get drafted.
Mongo has some territory between picks

I'd rather he play, but I get it.

And if we think guys should play in these bowl games because of NIL, then the NIL deal should stipulate that. Sorting out these details are the point of contracts.

I think he should play if not a 1-3 rd pick as I've said. If he is projected there, then it's up to him and the coach and his family but if he is projected there then I certainly can appreciate the view. For the record, I've not seen anything that says he's projected that high

that said, the notion that 'he's done so much for us' is pure bs. He was given a scholarship that is 6 figures in values and the opportunity to showcase his wears in a top conference. Remember people, these young men are here to play football and get an education, they are doing it for free even before NIL.

If he's injured and can't play that is another matter as well

No real right or wrong answer but for the love of God, stop with the beta view of 'he gave so much to us' and 'we were lucky to have him' mentality. It's a mutualistic relationship where both parties benefit

game day boys, hope we're ready and think the line is more indicative of the lack of respect RU gets than anything else

Of course he got money. But that's irrelevant to the point I was making.
huh? do you know what was offered to him to stay, leave, etc? your point doesn't hold credence because at the end of the day, he was paid to play and decided the amount he was paid here, vs leaving if he was offered, was sufficient for him to stay.

in a nutshell, if anyone else offered him to play elsewhere, the amount wasn't worth the move to him

1.we don't know what he was offered if he was offered
2.kyle was paid to play regardless
3.kyle opted to stay with the amount offered here

During the Pitt vs Toledo bowl, the announcers said that we would be seeing one of the best RBs Monangai in the bowl game. Maybe they didn't get the memo that he was sitting out?
