Rutgers hires Drew Mehringer as OC (Houston WR coach)

Reallly love this hire:

Mehringer went directly from his role as a graduate assistant coach at Ohio State to the co-offensive coordinator and play caller for James Madison in 2014, where he forged his reputation. In one season, he helped turn Georgia Tech transfer Vad Lee into one of the most dominant quarterbacks in the FCS, setting JMU records in yards (4,288), touchdowns (30) and total offense (4,288). Perhaps the most notable quality of Mehringer’s offense at JMU was the pace, as 37 of JMU’s 70 scoring drives lasted less than two minutes.

Mehringer returned to Houston to work with Herman, his long-time mentor last season. Mehringer played quarterback for Herman at Rice before injuries cut short his career and followed Herman to both Iowa State and Ohio State as a graduate assistant coach. Houston went 12-1 in Herman’s first season as a head coach and will play Florida State in the Peach Bowl. Mehringer brings an expertise in the high-tempo, wide open and quarterback-run heavy system that helped turn Herman into one of the country’s most respected offensive minds. Herman and Ash are close friends, and Herman gave Mehringer a strong recommendation for the job.

“Although we are extremely sad to see Drew go, especially me given our history and relationship, we know that Chris Ash and Rutgers is getting an unbelievable teacher, coach, recruiter and mentor,” Herman said.

At Houston, he was considered one of the staff’s best recruiters and an expert at social media.

“Drew is a rising star in the profession,” Ash said Sunday. “He is a very intelligent guy with a creative offensive mind. He’s been around explosive offenses and winning programs. He will do a great job caring for and developing our players.”

Young guy, and a bold hire. High upside.

The youth squad has arrived. Sounds like the new OC loves up tempo football duck- style. Should be a refreshing change from what we've been accustomed to. May go down hard with some of the old timers. Kids should love it. Puts even more emphasis on having a good D.

Compare to PSU hire. I'm liking it.

From his Houston bio:
Mehringer's offense at JMU set single-season program records with 1,060 offensive plays, 6,300 offensive yards, 315 first downs, 475 passing attempts, 286 passing completions, 30 passing touchdowns, 3,499 passing yards and 159 passing first downs. The JMU offense scored quickly as of the 70 JMU scoring drives, 37 were less than two minutes in length, yet 54 were 50 yards or more. In giving up just 14 turnovers, the JMU offense helped the Dukes rank second nationally in turnover margin at +14.

Mehringer spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons as a graduate assistant at Ohio State, working with the program's tight ends and wide receivers in his first season

nothing will get the old timers down if we see the offense march down the field throughout a game.... not saying there can't be any stumbles along the way on those drives, lost games, etc, but if we
see improvement on offense, quarterback able to use his talents to the max.. closer games against the biggies, no complaints by me....

Sounds like a rising superstar with Tom Herman apprentice. Tom wouldn't bring him along with him for 5 different teams if he wasn't sound.

Now I'm really looking forward to being in Seattle for the opener of a new era in RU football.

Very sceptacle of this hire. Is he going to have the ability to adapt to the strength of the players we currently have on the roster? This likely means goodbye to Russo. I hope coach has another QB in mind to bring in.
I would guess Ash put as much thought into this decision as you have. Grab the popcorn and watch it unfold..

Because Rutgers Coaches from NJ (other than Schiano) have worked in the recent past. This 2 as what Rutgers needed, a new set of eyes and ideas to move this program forward.

We literally have an assistant coach who has holiday dinners with the coach of the best NJ high school team. Haven't got a recruit from there in years.

Wipe it clean!

Sounds like a perfect choice. The guy's young, he has experience with the power spread, he's a good recruiter. Welcome Coach Mehringer!

We certainly have an idea of what offense we're running now. Exciting times ahead.

Was he the play caller at JMU when he was the co offensive coordinator? He's very young, hope he's the next Lincoln Riley. I would have liked more experience but his youth and energy should probably help recruiting. I'm not down on the hire but not excited by it either. The offense he's going to use is pretty much what I was expecting from whomever the OC was going to be so nothing new there.

I would like to know what JMU did on offense after he left and if there was any impact and who called the plays during his time there and after he left..

just a few more pieces ... a few more steps - and things will shift from powerhouse teams that have RU on the schedule thinking it is a sure "W" to those teams thinking "Oh crap - Rutgers is going to be clawing and scraping and battling in all kinds of unpredictable ways"

This will make a huge difference!

Second in total offense in FCS for 2015:

http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fcs/current/team/21

2014:
1,060 offensive plays, 6,300 offensive yards,
2015:
945 offensive plays, 6,300 offensive yards, 6345 offensive yards.

Seems the offense took off and did even better after he left. Looks like a total failure. :flush:

It looks like he called the plays so that's a positive at least. He's the was the co-OC/qb coach and those guys are usually the play callers in a co-OC setup. The guy he worked with Brad Davis went on earlier this year to ECU as OL coach. So it's good that he called plays albeit for only a year.
