Rutgers offers Pope John offensive lineman Sam Howson

Anyone know how the Tight End from Pope John (a couple year ago) is doing a Florida State?

Izzo played in a little more than half the games. 13 receptions for 177 yards and 2 TDs. Along with WR-RB Noah Brown (OSU) and QB Sonny Abrahamson (UVa) they had some serious talent up in Sparta. It's been a long time since RU had someone who attended PJ on the roster.

Ryan Izzo ooks to be doing OK:

TE Ryan Izzo, a Vernon resident and 2014 Pope John graduate, hauls in a 13-yard TD catch during the third quarter of Saturday night's game against Texas State in Tallahassee, Fla.

Here is a video of Howson. He looks like he manhandled everybody he was lined up against. Any idea why he was so lightly recruited? (it's a question, not a criticism).

Non-ranked by the 247Sports composite, Rutgers is Howson's only FBS offer, making it "a possibility" that he will eventually pledge to the Scarlet Knights.

"It's a possibility," he told NJ.com.

Wasn't little Bill Bailey the RB from PJ...he wasn't a bad player here some time back...maybe the Graber era..

baby face

Looks pretty solid at point of attack when blocking straight ahead, but kind of slow feet on lateral movement. Could be they think he could be a good special teams guy or utility lineman. Looks like he could really use some S&C work though so could fill out and become the straight ahead road grater type.

Assume he has definitely applied to some colleges - as a regular student - so where?
in other words - where has he sent his transcript, SAT scores & application fees ?

- the "it's a possibility" may be that he had sort of been moving forward with thinking that had not been including a full scholarship to a B1G team

Was he saying OK I'll be an accounting major ...
- & looking at D-2, D-3 schools where he could focus on getting his degree - & play & be BMOC?
- he could have adjusted his thinking to figuring that he would go to Univ of Scranton, Gettysburg, Moravian, FDU, Middleburry, Amherst, Denison or Johns Hopkins or whatever ... and now he has to reboot his brain.
Kid has a lot to process

... there might be a D3 coach somewhere who was dreaming of a four year starter & is now saying "Aw Nuts!"

Sam has edited his Twitter a bit, but as of last night, he had made three or four tweets nine days ago to get Blazek's attention with his highlights. So maybe Twitter found a player for RU.

The fact he was at the Big Man Camp and has a photo with coach Flood on his Twitter suggests he'd be in RU's databases, but who knows if anyone got to keep the database?

Center?

Maybe guard, pictures show a natuarally big kid at 6'4" but only 280 he needs to get in the weight room and really bulk up. That should also make him a little quicker as well, he certainly has the size.

Even if he doesn't end up a starteer could always be aplayer on special teams of backup. Not every recruit is going to be a starter.

Also as stated above maybe a way to get in the good graces of coaches and kids at his high school.

To be fair, the article also notes that when asked about the Rutgers offer he said: "Really, the only way to describe it is awesome."

On Twitter, the kid said: "I am beyond blessed and very thankful to say I have received a scholarship from Rutgers University!!"

You cant blame the kid for wanting to take his visit, learn more about the school, and meet the players and other coaches before deciding whether to commit.

on his twitter he says he has recieved a scholorship not just an offer. Makes it sounds like he has accepted.

Slow feet and slow hips. Decently flexible though. Good drive straight on. I think he is a big kid that was always a big kid. Needs to put serious time in weight room in order to even compete for a position. There is potential there but that is always a fancy word for almost.

Not that knowledgeable about O-lineman, but I trust that Blazek can vastly improve his technique. Think straight ahead speed and power are not too much of an issue. I would assume he can redshirt; which gives Mr. Parker a full year to fill him out, and work on lateral movement.

Might not be "polished", but I like the offer.

For most offensive lineman two years to develop physically and skill wise is not unusual, even for more highly rated players.

I'll take your word for it, coach. To my untrained eye, he is raw and powerful. He pancaked a few guys in the video.

I wasn't running the kid down. I was trying to emphasize that we can wait for him to get refined. Like I said, I have zero business evaluating linemen.

I didn't take it that way at all. As I have said, I trust the coaches to make judgments on recruits, as I am pretty sure this crew knows what they are doing.

So happy for the kid (even though he'd probably flip to ped St if they offer) ..but this is an embarrassing scholarship offer for the program. PWO at best..reeks of desperation

.....Because you're an offensive line guru, right?
The way I see it, if he was dedicated enough to gain 60 lbs, in a year in a healthy way, receive all-state accolades and cares about school, he's more worthy of a scolarship than any of the criminals that screwed the program over last season....even if he never sees the field.

Maybe you have not read what the coach is going to do here but read the Targum article on Parker and then you will understand how important this offer is.
Sam is offered, due to his hard word and desire to play at the next level and it is hard to put 60-80 Lbs of MUSCLE and not just body mass. This is the kids we are going to build our program! It is Not on the size or stars of the dog but rather the desire in the dog! Can you even conceive how hard he had to work to jack up 60+ pounds going from your Jr to Sr year he missed a hell of a lot of Jersey party time to do what he did.
No this offer is good for another reason. Flood did not consider this kid. But here is Coach Ash visiting PJ HS coach and the HS coach highlighted his player to the new guy in town. Ash smartly accepts the PJ HS advice and takes a chance on this kid Sam and makes him an offer. If he never see the field it is irrelevant ASH just made bonus points with PJ's Head coach
If you think this is out of the blue, look at the other offers made just at the last hour.
Timber Creek linebacker Tyreek Williams was offered and committed,
Camden Catholic defensive back Tyree Rodgers
Immaculata offensive lineman Mike Lonsdorf
Each one of these HCs now are in Ash's camp.
Best investment Ash can make being a non "JERSEY" coach!

Tyree Rodgers cancelled his RU visit. I guess having his coach in Ash's camp did not help.

But the overture does count, i.e. the Point goes to Ash.
The bonus play was by Ash in making the offer. the HC is happy his kid get offer and that Ash at least listen to the HS HC and took his advice and made the offer.
BTW this was about Sam and here is where the bonus point are made by ash is listening to the HS HCs and that is all they want so it is a win for Ash and long term Rutgers.

What does it matter? If Tyree ends up with Rutgers you will just complain we flipped an ODU commit. If he doesn't come, you'll say we can't even flip an ODU commit. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
