Rutgers Recruiting

There goes my Jordan defense.
If the NJ HS coaches feel he's not trying hard to recruit their players, they will advie there players to look at another school.
I've been saying Eddie's 4 year should prove if he deserves to stay or not and it should take 7 years for him to build a good program, but if he isn't making the Rutgers recruiting effort felt by HS coaches now, Rutgers will be just as bad in that 7th year as they are this season.

Until I hear something different about the way Jordan's recruiting I can't keep defending him and say he needs one more year to have RU MBB start showing improvement and have RU fans feel the program is headed in the right direction.

That Sports U 15U team is LOADED. I watched them in Atlanta in June. Just my .02 cents but Rutgers would be wise to develop a strong relationship with that program.

Eddie couldn't pick a HS bball coach out of a lineup
I remember when a Waters assistant coach went to a recruiting event and asked who is this Hurley guy?

To say there has been a disconnect with NJ/NY recruits would be a under statement.

between this article and the comments made about rebounding drills, Its pretty evident that Eddie is not the guy to handle this monstrous undertaking of a job. Maybe if he came after Waters or Hil but not now. It requires energy and Eddie doesn't have it plus he has assembled probably the worst assistant staff you can find for a rebuild like this

I know guys are fed up right now but just looking at the bottom line, isn't Sanders, Laurent, Goode, and Freeman a solid class?

Zags should be ashamed of himself. We have the best freshman in the Big Ten. Another freshman who can play. One of the most coveted JuCo's in the country. A couple of sophomores I like. The idea this staff isn't busting its arse to upgrade this roster is a ****ing joke. A coach of an AAU team with a bunch of 2018 kids complains Eddie hasn't stopped by. And Zags is printing that shit as an indictment?

This team plays hard, is athletic and attacks. You are what your record says you are, but this team sure as heck could be 6-3 without a whole lot of luck. Screw Zag.s And same to the posters using this to slam Eddie. You should be just as ashamed.

Best freshman in the B1G and we play hard?

C'mon.

Yes and yes. We have given up for over 70 3 times in 8 games. And we have done that as a shitty rebounding team. Held two high majors under 70. And Corey Sanders is the best freshman in the Big Ten. Kid is an absolute stud.

You lose all credibility when you claim Sanders is the best freshman in the Big Ten. Turn on your TV and Watch Marylands Diamond Stone, or maybe Purdues Caleb Swannigan, just to name a couple. And we play hard? It takes a players only meeting for us to wake up and barely get by the worst team on our schedule after our big in state rival game where we get run out of the building

Can you remind me how Rutgers did during Riggins all-conference year in 86/87? Even a stud, if Sanders actually is, can't make a dent in a program that is as bad as we are now.

Yes. Pretty solid. But with a talented point guard like Sanders one would expect there would be some big-time big men and shooters happy to join him next year. But, currently Eddie has ZERO commitments for next season. That is cause for concern, if not full blown panic!

You are what your record is. And RU lost those games by showing no heart and playing truly awful b-ball during crunch time.

Swanigan can play. I'd take Corey. And Diamond Stone is a terrific freshman big who is likely a lottery pick but not sure he is a "dominant" college player. He doesn't start for Maryland.

In one way I can't fault Eddie for not recruiting NJ, why would he, the program is so toxic you need to get out of state to have a chance. It's a lot easier to recruit out of state where the kids don' t know the program is train wreck. If Cory or Laurent were from NJ would they be at RU? I doubt it. Would any of the coaches mentioned send a kid to RU, I doubt it. So while the situation is not what it should be, recruiting in FLA or the Canary islands makes a lot more sense. It's a sorry state of affairs but the logic is irrefutable.

You are either a friend of Eddie's or you are watching a whole other game than what I see. I see no rebounding, a lot of one on one play and a team that plays hard sometimes and looks disinterested other times.

I can overlook getting beat but when you lose to a decent Seton Hall team by 20+ at home and you lost a tournament game 92-31, that is just not good coaching!!!!!!

We can certainly disagree about Eddie coaching, but I am not certain how your post has anything to do with Zags hatchet job.

In two and a half years the HC and staff have recruited 16 players to Rutgers, likely double what any other staff in the country has had to recruit. The idea these guys are "lazy", which is what Zags is implying, is beyond irresponsible and in my opinion should be responded to by the RU fan base with derision and anger. Regardless of how you feel about the job Eddie is doing.

How many recruits do we have in the Fall of 2016? Of all the issues this program has, this past fall is the most troubling. Regardless of effort, he cannot survive with this type of result. We needed a class of three recruits that can play -- not projects. We are at zero right now.

The other indictment of this staff is not recruiting Otis Livingston. It tells me they have no idea what they are doing

Last year we got both Freeman and Laurent in April. Not happy with Kwe decommitting and no verbals early, but I'll form an opinion about our 2016 class when its done. So far I think our '14 and '15 classes have been pretty solid, classes needed to build a roster due to the fact the roster contains ONE upperclassman not recruited by this staff. You need to realize this years JUNIORS and SENIORS should have been players left in the program or recruited to the program before Eddie set foot on campus. From those TWO classes we have Lewis.

there is so much exaggeration in this post its not funny

What I heard directly from one of the top NJ HS coaches confirms what Zags said.

Van Macon has been on the staff since Mike Rice's first year. So, this story is saying that in 5 years, Van Macon has rarely attended High School games or met New Jersey High School coaches? When the Mike Rice story was in the news, everyone was talking about Rutgers and their coaches. BUT, not one the people talked of them remember Van Macon's name as being a Rutgers Assistant coach ???

Anyone believe that ??

I remember stories of Van Macon and Jordan going to many many Briscoe games, Roberson games and those of other top HS players.

I call BS on some parts of this story. In fact, it was already refuted by others. I remember games last year where there were groups of New Jersey High School players behind the bench area. It was even reported on this board. This year Andre Rafus, who plays at RC has been to multiple games.

Why would Zags make it up?

I doubt the head coach I know is lying either.

The general premise isn't BS. The degree of "nonchallance" is the issue.

I could care less on this story. Zero recruits tells me what I need to know.

So.....he does not know Van Macon, who has been on the staff since 2010 ??

Do you remember stories from the summer camp series when recruits were mentioning how Rutgers was one of the schools recruiting them the hardest ? I remember multiple reports of that.....on this very board.

Let me get this straight.....Rutgers has about 5 top New Jersey players that went here in the last 25 years...but, all of a sudden this guy Zags, (who is a Hurley lover), .is blasting the Rutgers staff for not getting top New Jersey players ??

You can certainly blast Jordan for making the decision to focus his recruiting on Out of State....but, given the fact that ONLY 5 top players attended Rutgers in 25 years, it may not be a bad idea.

Obviously, the, the 11th hour decommit by Kwe Parker hurt.

I want to believe Zags is wrong, but until proven wrong ( without a doubt) will not defend Eddie or his staff's recruiting ability.
Even though I believe ( before this year) they did fairly well on the recruiting front, what those HS coaches scares me and can't see why Zag would make up a story like that .

Top In state players have never attended Rutgers for basketball.....and that goes back to the glory years of 1976, the Final 4 TEAM and Tom Young. Everyone thought 1976 would do it, open up the doors, but........ what happened, Top Jersey players still left the state in the years after.

This is a much BIGGER issue then one Coaching Staff in 2015.

Let's not kid ourselves, Rutgers has been spurned a thousand times over by both the top jersey players and their high school coaches over the years. Rutgers is now looking elsewhere and I can't fault them for it.
