Rutgers Recruiting

The facilities excuse is a reason it is/will be very difficult to get us in the Top 75 and make postseason very difficult.

We are in the Mid 200s, land of the mid major cellar dwellers . In the 8 team Ivy league we'd be in 7th place. in the 9 team Summit League we'd be between 8 and 9.

last year we finished #215...closest team was Nebraska at #133.

thank goodness for Tom Cream, there is a template to hang my hat on. He did it by throwing all 5 cards back, in hindsight a move Eddie should have done.

So spot on - we are struggling with the Howards, CCSU's and Central Arkansas of the world. You don't need facilities to win at this level.

Lack of facilities does not make you this bad.

Very interesting that you mention Tom Crean, the current Indiana Coach. Do you know what his record was in his first 3 years at Indiana ??? Let me show you.

2008–09 Indiana 6–25 1–17 11th
2009–10 Indiana 10–21 4–14 T–9th
2010–11 Indiana 12–20 3–15 11th

If he was at Rutgers...this Board would have called for him to be fired after Year 2, certainly after year 3 with only a 2 win improvement.

Was Indiana coming off probation ? I recall something with Kelvin Sampson, but, I can't remember the details.

We have had 8 coaches since Bob Hurley has been at St. Anthony: Tom Young, Craig Littlepage, Bob Wenzel, Kevin Bannon, Gary Waters, Fred Hill, Mike Rice, and Eddie Jordan. We have gotten a grand total of 2 players to come to the state university from there and one was a head case and transferred out and one was a benchwarmer. We even gave Hurley's kid his start in coaching and what did that get us? Hurley has absolutely no time for us and never has so frankly I say the hell with Hurley. Eddie took the job and Hurley undermined him in the newspaper maybe one day after he was hired.
Hurley has never been a friend of Rutgers so why the hell suck up to him.? It wouldn't make a difference.

Imagine......

Bad coach when he did not have the players.

Good coach when he got the players.

It probably took him a few years (3) to build some recruiting momentum.

I believe he was signing a top class in his 2nd season, when you can show me where EJ is bringing in Tom Crean classes then these two can be compared..do you now think that EJ is going to be recruiting studs off an 8 win season. Crean a college coach who knows recruiting, Eddie an NBA coach who doesnt

Things in common between Indiana and Rutgers basketball:

1. Both play in the B1G
2.

2009 he had a good class with three 4* in it
2010 not so good two 3*
Indiana's name gets their HC in the door, Rutgers is told to leave their card.
Big difference when it comes to name value and recruiting
But Cream does get good recruits just about every year, but his job seems to be in jeopardy every year as well.

It's mostly coaching that's the issue. Even without Freeman, you cannot lose to Seton Hall by 29 at home.

Most of Seton Hall team are sophomores. Good ones, but youth cannot be the excuse for every blowout.

BAC again shows that he lacks common sense....Expects a team that has not been to the tourney in 25 years to compete in Recruiting with a team like Indiana with it's history, tradition and winning past.

Rutgers is taking baby steps in recruiting.....the coach does not matter.

My post about Tom Crean was about a very good coach going 6-25 when he did not have the players. He thinks recruiting at Rutgers after Rice is comparable to recruiting at Indiana. That is what I call a lack of common sense or a negative guy with an agenda. Of course, he thinks Danny Hurley would work miracles....he would walk on water on his way to recruiting top Jersey players to Rutgers.

To put it in business terms....25 years of losing and Mike Rice have damaged the Rutgers BRAND in basketball.

I have been avoiding this thread for a while, might as well post.

I disagree with the last class. He has done very well recruiting in the past year. Remember Goode was a pickup from two years ago when we were still picking us up off the floor. Sanders, Freeman, Laurent (I don't know why everyone is down on Laurent just because he isn't first team all B1G is freshman year doesn't mean he doesn't have potential to be a solid B1G contributor), plus Johnson and Grier is a good haul. The one thing you will notice is that with the exception for the 5th year transfer there are zero players from the NJ area on that list. That doesn't mean he is doing a terrible job its just that for one reason or another he doesn't recruit NJ HS players. Its an oddity I agree but as long as he fills the 2016 class with something similar to 2015 we will be fine.

Facilities don't seem to affect C Viv and Scott Goodale nearly as much.

watch our talent vs. GWs (which is not a bunch of McDonald AAs). It's night and day

They both use red and white in their school colors.

If you want EJ fired, there's another common denominator. Many Indiana fans want Crean gone. One of the reasons is because his teams don't play defense. It showed in the Maui Tournament where they lost 2 out of 3 to Wake Forest and UNLV, as well as, getting blown out against Duke. They can't stop penetration to the basket and have difficulty on the defensive boards. Many Indiana fans dream of Brad Stevens leaving the NBA, along with some other coaches.

Personally, I'd love to have Indiana's shooting. It's awesome.
