Rutgers vs Penn State game thread

Well, I was really hoping for two happy things tonight: RU win and UCONN loss. At least one of those is looking like it is going to happen.

RU beat themselves. Bonehead miscues. Not realizing the shot clock over and over. Three second violations. Lack of bball IQ for too many of the key players. The bench should have also made it known when there was only a few ticks left on the clock as some of those situations were after being inbounded. They should already know what to do in those situations.

Maybe the men's win tonight and the madhouse that I still call, "The RAC" can work some magic for our women going forward.

Tim does need to fall back in favor of Nadine at this point. That needs to happen. Needs to swallow his pride and do what's best for the program in the short-term.

Magic will come with change, not from another Rutgers team playing well because their HC knows what he's doing.

Ok! Calm down! lol As you can see I'm with you on the need for change. I'm just trying to find some way to remain positive at this point. That's all.

And, fwiw, some people were starting to talk about Pike in the same way as Tim during the men's recent struggles this season. Before their win tonight, they would have blasted you for saying he knows what he's doing.

Didn't see Liz at all in this game did we? Somewhat surprising. He is going to totally demoralize her if he's not careful.

Surprised to see Joyia, Ericka, and Stephanie put in cold of the bench when we needed to make a push to get the lead back and not let them extend it beyond reach. Those subs gave us no offense at a time when that was needed to keep pace with PSU.

I would have used Morris or Sanderlin being that they have given you sparks before in crunch time. And they are not scared to take the shot,

Just listened to Tim's postgame conference and can't help but shake my head. He actually said that they played a good game. He's happy where the team is going. They played with purpose. He thinks if they continue to do so they can get a lot done.

My question is, ............When is he expecting them to get something done? Are they going to be 6 and 22 before getting it right. The core transfer players' collegiate careers will be coming to an end.

I do see positives in the way they moved the ball for most of the game and got points off of assists. But Tim should have called timeout and let them have it when they started letting the ball stick against the zone and would end up turning it over.

Tim's plans for team progress seem like they will simply take too long to be a benefit this season.

Enough already we are going to be lucky to win 2 games the rest of the way; Hobbs has to act very very swiftly once this season is over or we will be lucky to field a team next year!!

I thought Tim had a good offensive plan for last night's game. The players executed it well in the first half. In the second half, not so much, for long stretches. Penn State was not playing extremely well either. If we are on our game, we should have won that one by about 20.

Certain players were once considered long-range shooters, Joyia and Liz in particular. Since it was known they were going to zone the way they did, you were going to get plenty of open looks on the perimeter as long as you move the ball quickly. Perfect opportunity to try to get Liz going so that she can be more of a regular contributor. It is a game that is suited for using Joyia if she has her shot going. If they practice for that and have the shooters get lots of reps from three, I gotta believe we shoot better from there than what we did. Give those players a green light to take the three and maybe the results will be better from there.
They are too hesitant which is taking them out of rhythm on those attempts because they first are thinking about it.....is it okay for me to shoot it yet, or did we make enough passes before I can shoot this three?

I'm afraid he has coached the offense out of Lasha when early on, he was hinting at her not playing within the team. He did that right after the Harvard game that Lasha bailed us out of. That was the best stretch of basketball that we've played all season as a team. Her teammates fed off of her energy. Sayawni started knocking down threes. He's taken the aggressiveness out of Lasha's game. That was the quality that most made her a tough guard. She only takes a couple of shots a game, it seems. And those are often when under duress before shot clock expires or team has nothing else going. No designed plays for the strong players is making them look really average. The opposing coach has to be saying to themselves, Thanks for taking it easy on us Tim! It's so hard to watch.

I'll just say that Tim seems to have a good mind for the game but he does not have a feel for players. He doesn't seem to be able to gauge the talent that he has to work with. Too many times, he is playing the wrong people. The players that are perfect for certain situations are often never even put into the game.

Penn State made their push mainly by attacking the basket. Tiya got in foul trouble, Tim goes to Sakima. Not a dropoff. Then instead of really controlling the paint with his other rim protector who can defend and rebound(Chyna), he brings in Stephanie who doesn't give you what you needed at that moment, allowing Penn State to continue to control the game. I think we score regularly against them with those two as dump down options for Osh at the foul line. I only saw one big for PSU.

Or if you don't go to Chyna, at least bring in Morris or Sanderlin. They both look more comfortable for the crucial moment of the game and are better offensive options. We needed offense, to keep pace with PSU. Those three subs that Tim chose slowed us down in that moment, hence, you end up losing a game you should have won.

I try to be optimistic, but find little reason top be optimistic about RU's chances this year the way they look now.
We can find things to like how the team played in a lot of the games they play.
But if the end result is a loss and losses keep piling up , with a good spot here and there in the games to like, the good play we find encouraging means not a thing when the end result is another loss.

What the play this year accomplished: turmed \me from an optimistic outlook into a pestimistic one and instead of finding reasons to refute the complaints about the HC and program, I'm finding myself among the complainers

I hear you. As you can see, I've also joined the complainers this season regarding the coaching. My life experiences just have ingrained in me to remain optimistic. It's so much healthier.

I stay grounded in reality though. I don't see this team becoming world beaters, but I know better days are ahead for the program........one way or another. It may take this kind of failure to expedite the necessary changes to occur. That keeps me from pulling my hair out.

I just wish they would make some kind of change right now.

I can't help but wonder, if Tim stuck to the core players last night, for the whole game, do we make a play or two more on offense to put us in the win column? I would have liked those chances much better than the sub route he took.

I watch tons of Rutgers womens games in the past and have slacked the last couple games but watching penn state game I knew our girls looked totally lost without their coach. Hopefully next year we can bounce back but rn it’s not looking so hot.

They really looked like a bunch of lost zombies both on the court, and the bench.

One other thing that needs to be addressed. This is the last one for a while. I know you guys are probably tired of me ranting.

Our ladies have to learn how to play the 2-3 zone defense when the ball is being inbounded under the basket. They all face the inbounder and are totally oblivious to where the offensive players are behind them and where they are cutting to. They just step right in front of any of our girls to catch a pass and lay it in and get fouled. Our girls are blind until it is already too late to do anything but foul. It's the right defense for the situation but it's the worst application of that defense that I've ever seen. Biddy basketball level. If this was the men's game, they would be getting alley-oop dunked on every time.

Tim has to teach them to open up/turn their bodies sideways so that they can use their peripheral vision to see where the opponent is positioned and where the play is trying to go so they can step in front, disrupt cutters, bust the play up, and surely protect the basket, all while seeing the inbounder.

never get tired of seeing someone being enthusiastic.
Might not agree with all you say, but enjoy reading your opinion.

It’s pretty obvious that CVS is not coming back as HC. Run is a nice person but not P5 H C ready. Hopefully Hobbs is quietly pursuing a touch notch HC. The sooner the better.
