Rutgers Women’s Golf Heads to Ohio for Rocket Classic

After the 2 rounds today Rutgers is in FIRST PLACE, 7 strokes ahead of Akron and 21 strokes ahead of Toledo. Add to that RU's Leigha Devine is 1st by 1 stroke with RU's Rikki Nordvik in 3rd, 2 behind. RU also has Maeve Rossi in 6th.

Full disclosiue this is the weakest field RU will likely face all '22-'23 season. Currently Sagarin has the team ranked #105. Golfstat's 1st weekly rankings come out tomorrow. The next highest ranked team is #142 Central Michigan and not including RU, the field averages a ranking of 206. Still this would be a long sought after win if they can hold on and with 3 players in the Top 6, a good chance for a 2nd individual title this Fall.

Rutgers Wins both the Team and Individual championships!

The Women ran away with the tourney. At one point they led by 19 strokes before winning by 13 strokes over 2nd place Akron. The team had the lowest score all 3 rounds. This is a tourney RU should have made a very good showing and they certainly did other than a last 9 hole stumble. I have no idea how long it's been since the team won a title but it has to be many years.

As individuals, at one point on the back 9 RU's Rikki Nordvik, Leigha Devine, and Maeve Rossi were in a 3 way tie for First Place at +5. Devine ran into 2 Bogeys while Rossi had a Triple and 2 Bogeys. Nordvik played her final 8 holes 1 Over to claim the Individual Championship, her 1st.

Top 5 Teams

1. Rutgers.............+46
2. Akron...............+59
T3. Cent Michigan....+72
T3. Toledo..............+72
5. Bowling Green....+82

The team has 1 more Fall tournament, The Battle at the Beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mx at the end of the month.

So it was 3 years since they won the Julie Inkster which was a fairly big tourney iirc. Thought it was a bit longer ago. Rossi was on that team and a RU golfer was the individual champion at that event too.

The tourney in Mexico should have a stronger field just by TCU, a Top 25 team, hosting. It doesn't appear the event has been played since 2019. Covid?
