Rutgers Women's Soccer Hosts Saint Joseph's and George Mason

Disappointed with the tie, but RU came back to tie and is still unbeaten

Some thoughts for what their worth. We had a nice win today against George Mason, though they were not a particularly strong side. Very good to see Amirah Ali play a full game. Don't remember her playing many, if any, games last year or this where she hasn't had some bump, bruise or pull that caused her to leave the game. Against St. Joe's she only played the first 9 min. We need her in the game. She is a legitimate threat & scorer, and has developed what looks like a real chemistry with Brittany Laplant.

We did not play at all well against St. Joe's. Sloppy, no chemistry or rhythm, especially off the bench. The exceptions, IMO, were Provenzano, Almer, Visco, Wright, LaPlant, Holland & I'm sure another girl or two who I can't recall. Provenzano & Almer have been very, very good throughout this young season. LaPlant has played very well also. Wright is always excellent. Ali has been excellent when she has been in, but can't over emphasize that we need her in the game. Tierney Wiltshire has had her moments as well, as has Nicolle Whitley.

Shea Holland a frosh played center D the last two games while Chantelle Swaby has been with the Jamaican national team. She has looked very good & steady. When Swaby returns in a few games & we hopefully get frosh Emily Harrigan back from injury we will be that much stronger. Overall we are faster this year, but need to take better care of the ball & play with more precision especially against stronger opponents who are going to pressure us hard. Sorry if these thoughts are rambling, but it was hot out there today & I am old. Onward & upward. Go RU.

One PS. Very late in the St Joe's game, last minute I believe, one of our girls had the ball in the box & was moving toward goal when she was hammered in the back & went down. A clear penalty. No call. Ref had officiated a reasonably good game until then. Hope this is not a harbinger of things to come where we get hosed at critical junctures, as we have in recent years.

I agree with rudad02, Ali and LaPlant seem to be connecting well, and there seems to be a chemistry we haven't seen recently. Ali seems to be seeing LaPlants runs sooner and is getting the ball off sooner as opposed to sometimes holding a little too long and losing an opportunity and sometimes possession. Ali is very good at drawing in defenders and it appears LaPlant knows where the vulnerabilities are based on defenses collapsing to stop the ball and makes a lot of very nice runs, so Ali has choices and can mix it up and keep defenses off balance, she makes a lot happen. I also agree with rudad02 that Ali needs stay healthy and on the pitch. Unfortunately, it appears Rutgers hasn't figured out LaPlants shin issues, her minutes may be limited again this year, the key is that they be impactful. Shot counts are up! Tierney is applying some pressure on a lot of minutes. Defense as always looks solid and it will be difficult for teams to score. Back line is technical, composed, organized and physical. Keeper, sorry dont recall her name, looks very good and incredibly composed. Rutgers will often pick a ball off in the midfield and immediately go backwards to reset, maintain possession, and look to change the point of attack. The build up appears intentionally slow, I would really like to see them pressure from the point of the turnover, use their speed up top and attack when the opposing teams defense is not set. I think we miss a lot opportunities in transition after a steal. The amount of pressure the coaching staff demands of the forwards requires a tremendous amount of energy which takes away a little on the counter attack, defense and possession over a fast paced and dynamic attack, which we could have this year. Mid field will be crucial as the games get tougher, we sometimes give up some speed in that area, but Whitley and Provenzono are clearly very technical players and hold possession well, would love to see them slot some more balls and apply pressure faster. Overall, with the exception of St. Joe's game, I think the team looks solid, and the offense is much improved, they just get caught back chasing balls on defense which makes it difficult to recover in the attack. Looking forward to seeing what the team can do this year.

Killerbees3-- really appreciate your post. Agree with your incisive analysis. Your knowledge of the game surpasses mine. Your points re: transition from D to O is spot on when I think of it. We are a defensive oriented team, though I know the staff is trying to get more O. You are right that we really expect our forwards to come back hard on D & it is very demanding of them. Yet there is no reason that, as you say, we couldn't attack after gaining the ball when our opponents D isn't set, rather than playing it back & starting a deliberate build up. As you and I both noted, we have speed up top & it could really be utilized in that manner, though I suppose we would have to give up a little on the forwards D. Not sure if we somehow could do both. Rely on your knowledge here. Yes LaPlant's shins are very frustrating & I'm sure to her most of all. You can see that her confidence & game are there. Please keep posting.

I am a die hard 4-3-3 fan, and I love a team designed to be a high powered offense!!!! however part of me would like to see Rutgers try a 4-4-2 with their current chess players, at least some if the time. This would allow Ali and LaPlant to be more creative, to both stay higher and potentially expend less energy on defense and more on offense because there would be more players holding, mid fielders could challenge the outlet passes from the back and the forwards would essentially stay high and be working to get free as soon as Rutgers gains possession and then the team moves forward together. While the current system is designed to prevent service from the first 1/3 rd of the field, rarely does it ever result in quality offensive pressure, partially because we always play back first but also because the forwards cannot recover and are frankly spent. Of course the intent is just that, defense, and it obviously works, let's face it Rutgers doesn't lose and they have the best defense in the Country at all 11 positions!!!! It would however be nice to get away from OT and ties. I think LaPlant is as gifted as Ali, technically, tactically, and athletically, she has as much if not more closing speed, but with this system, you almost can't have both effective defense and a high powered offensive, it's sometimes at moments in the game one or the other. Which is why we prevent so many goals but often score less. This team has the talent to light up the scoreboard with Ali and LaPlant. Often Ali is the highest player alone when she gains possession. In a 4-4-2 the top 2 players work very closely and combine in smaller spaces with a lot of combination play, this also allows runs from the week side by mid fielders and backs, opening up the game. Having 2 players higher may allow a quicker attack in transition as well, basically you're expending more energy moving to create offense as opposed to moving to defend. I like the idea of winning 3 or 4 to 1 as opposed to tying or winning 1-0. I feel like having Tierny a little more withdrawn would give Rutgers more speed and numbers in the mid field and take defensive responsibility off Ali and LaPlant so they can do what they do, apply pressure and score goals, basically that's what they would do, save energy to attack and play offense. Then again, this could also mean those 2 players may at times have to play more defensively because there's only 2 up top, which could be counter productive, it's all about design and intent. This can be done in a 4-3-3 as well, but it means the formation must constantly morph, sometimes looking like a 4-4-2, a 4-5-1, 3-3-4, 3-2-5, etc.... and the forwards would constantly be changing positions which would also allow for more recuperation, designed to allow recovery. It can be done, but is much more complicated, yet very dynamic and difficult to defend. Just a few thoughts. The good thing is the team looks very solid offensively this year when all cylinders are firing.

I agree with you Killerbees there are so many times when we bring all our girls back that we have no one up top and the offense only seems to be based on long balls to Ali. I definitely agree she is getting rid of the ball quicker and seeing LaPlant but they are often the only two on any counterattack. That is why when Ali went out against St. Joe's we had absolutely no offense and no offensive threat without her.

Bees, very interesting on the various formations that are possible. Kind of like the sound of the 4-4-2. The other permutations of the 4-4-3, though tough for me to visualize, are interesting as well. I agree regarding LaPlant & her abilities. I also think that she sees the play well.
