Starting tomorrow, Rutgers hosts 8 other teams in the first college team event at the Rutgers Golf Course since 2017. In that event RU finished 3rd.

The field consists of teams from the Northeast. At #89 Rutgers is the highest ranked team in the field, followed by #90 Georgetown, #120 Dartmouth, and #121 Sacred Heart. Also competing are Seton Hall, St Johns, Monmouth, Lehigh, and Albany, all of which are ranked 200th+. This is an event Rutgers should hope (expect?) to win playing on their home course.

Pairings were up on Golfstat earlier but were taked down for some reason. Before they were removed, Rutgers was paired with Georgetown and Dartmouth, teeing off in the shotgun start at 830AM. According to the Hall and SJU sites this is a not often used 6 player team where usually the lowest 4 scores each round count for the team score instead of the mostly used format of 5 players, lowest 4 count. A recent example of where the 6 player format had been used was the 2023 B1G Championship. Last year that hurt RU as there were only 5 players left on the team. It would make sense that the regular 5 of Leigha Devine, Rikke Nordvik, Cathi Graf, and Lucrezia and Lorena Rossettin will be entered along with either Krystal Li or Emily Jones with the other playing as an individual.

Rutgers will tee of on holes 1-5. A 2nd round will follow with the 18 hole final Sunday.

Devine, who was selected as B1G Golfer of the week after her 2nd Place finish out in Fresno last week, has moved into the Top 300 women college golfers.

After the windy 1st Round, Rutgers leads the Tourney by 6 strokes, shooting a +8, 292. Rutgers was led by Rikke Nordvik's 2 Under 69 which included an Eagle on the Par 5 4th Hole. She is tied for 1st out of 56 golfers playing.

RU currently has 4 players, 5 if you count James as an individual, in the Top 12. Lucrezia Rossettin (T4) shot a 2 Over 73 with Leigha Devine and Cathi Graf tying for 12th with twin 4 Over 75s. Lorena Rossettin shot 77 and Krystal Li an 80.

Playing an an individual, Emily James channeled her Welsh roots playing in the wind, shooting a 1 Over 72. and is in 3rd Place.

It appears Sacred Heart may have had a WD as one member of their team has no score. That would mean playing with 5 golfers instead of 6. Of course it could also just be a scoring issue. Won't know until 2nd round scores start being posted.

The 2nd Round should be under way.

Ok it was a scoring issue with Sacred Heart. Before anyone thinks it's on Rutgers, it's not. They aren't in charge of scoring.

In the windy and cold afternoon round, Rutgers increased their lead to 12 strokes by shooting a team 10 Over 294. Individually Rikke Nordvik continues to be tied for 1st after shooting a +3, 74. She actually had a multi stroke lead at -4 but bogeyed 5 of her last 7 holes. Cathi Graf shot 73, moving into a Tie for 5th. Leigha Devine's 74 moved her up to T8, Lorena Rossettin shot 73 and is T10 while her sister, Lucrezia, shot 78 and stands T13. Frosh Crystal Li (T23) shot 76.

Emily James playing as an individual is having the best tourney of her Frosh year, currently Tied for 8th along with Devine after a 77.

There have only been 5 Rounds of Par or better out of 112 played today. Conversely there's been 35 or more at least 10 Over. Maybe with less wind and a bit warmer tomorrow that will change.

Rikke Nordvik and Rutgers complete a wire-to-wire sweep at the Rutgers Invitational.

In doing so Nordvik earns her 2nd career victory, moving to T5 all time. Her other win was at the 2022 Rocket Invitational in Ohio. In that event, she and Leigha Devine went back and forth all 3 rounds with Nordvik besting her teammate by 1 stroke. Rutgers not only won that tourney but finished 1-2-3 as Maeve Rossi finished 3rd, 4 strokes behind. It was also RU's last team title until today.

Nordvik won , with the exception of her 2nd 9 in the 2nd round, by playing steady golf in not the best conditions. After 9 holes today she had played her way into a 3 stroke lead over her nearest competitor, Marlene Clausen of Albany, by shooting Even Par. By 13 she had a 5 stroke lead and coasted to an Even Par 71, a 3 Round total of +1, 215 and a 4 stroke victory.

As a team, Rutgers shot their best round of the weekend, a 6 Over 290 contributing to a 26 stroke win. Lorena Rossettin shot an Even Par 71 and finished 5th. Leigha Devine shot 73 and finished T6. Cathi Graf shot 75, finishing the tourney 8th, Lucrezia Rossettin shot 76 and finished T12 and Krystal Li shot 76, finishing T21. Playing as an Individual, Emily James' 73 finished a successful weekend, tying teammate Devine for 6th.

Final Top 5 Teams....

1. #89 RUTGERS.............+24
2. #207 Albany.................+50
3. #120 Dartmouth..........+51
4. #90 Georgetown.........+52
5. #121 Scared Heart.......+55

Final Top 5 Individuals....

2. Gromley - G'town............+5
3. Clausen - Albany..............+6
4. El Chaib - Sacred Heart..+7
5. Lo Rossettin - RU...........+8

Next up for the team is the Therese Hession Invitational played at Ohio State's Scarlet Course the 13th-14th. I know that at least 7 B1G teams are entered including RU. The team will face much tougher competition there. After that is the B1G Championship.

Knight isn't that scoring still a little high for the last day; the wind was down conditions were good and I know our course is not that difficult?

I've never played the course so I can't speak from experience but would have expected RU to go lower.

One of the multitude of factors that go into rankings points is score verses course rating and slope. Playing from the Women's Black Tees made it 6033 yards with the Rating 75.2 and Slope 135.

2 things working against this being a bigger deal is the number of teams competing (9) and the really poor average ranking of those teams. It was pretty weak with Georgetown the only other team in the Top 100.

What will help their ranking is the 26 stroke victory. No matter the quality of opponent, they are all D1 teams and RU will earn some points. That said they may not earn as many points as they have in a tourney or two they didn't win.

It will help Nordvik improve her ranking more.

The new rankings come out Wednesday. It will show how many points RU earned and the next tourney likely will have few "cupcakes".

For those who may not know, Rating, (75.2 in this case), is the expected score a scratch golfer should shoot from a particular set of tees on a particular course.

I’m very shocked it’s rated that hard for the women have played there many teams and it’s a pretty easy course

What tees do you play from?

For the tees the women played, rating and slope is 68.7 and 128 for men.

Rating 68.7

Slope 128

Yes that's pretty low.

The Women's Rating and Slope at the Black Tees is higher than some other Tourneys the team participated in this spring. Westbrook Invitational is one.

Well, the win only improved the ranking by 1 spot to #88. Expected maybe 3 but the weak field must have had even more weighting than I assumed. They received 27.37 ranking points. By comparison these are the 5 '23-'24 tourneys where they received the most points......

Briar's Creek - 8th out of 17, 35.33 points
RUTGERS INV - 1st out of 9, 27.37 points
Paradise Inv - 4th out of 13, 27.32 points
Thompson Invite 6th out of 15, 26.18 points
Fresno St Inv - 8th out of 21, 22.12 points.

All these events happened in the Spring portion of the season which shows why the team has moved up 25 places from #113. Too bad they had a rough Fall.

The Women ar ranked higher than the Men for the 1st time I can recall. The Men dropped 8 spots to #90 after struggling start to finish out at Mizzou.

Rikke Nordvik actually received more points finishing 8th at Briar's Creek than she did winning over the weekend.
