Great job last night by RU! I think the smartest move of the night was Billy Smith deciding to hit a switch for a reversal instead of standing up for and escape! Great decision on his part. LH heavyweight was totally caught off guard!
Nice recap. Dippery's late season run is probably most surprising to me. Phil also looking better after a lot of close loses during the year. Can't believe Smith is in jeopardy of getting squeezed out of an NCAA bid. Seems like the inquiries above about why no Giraldo last night remain unanswered. Assuming injury not weight.
jd,I actually think he got screwed on the stalling call.Brown was back peddling the entire 3rd period and looked exhausted. My friend, whose at the the match, text me that he overheard Brown tell Brad Dillon, that Gravina was strong and relentless. Now that says something. He's gonna be something special in the RU program for the next 2.5 years.
jd..super recap.Took the words right out of my mouth.Richie Lewis wrestled tough, but a little sloppy. No sweat, sometimes wrestlers have off days.Perrotti..totally get him looking spacey out there. Was his last match at home, alot of pressure, but he squeaked it out.I have too say,I think Giraldo is not going too stay with this.Shoot me for being the outspoken minority, but he looks burnt out there, with no interest. You're right,it could be a weight issue, but alot of kids are sucking weight and doing well.Him not making weight last night is another sign of burn out.I really, really hope I am wrong, but being a former RU wrestler, and coaching kids over the years, you see the tell tale signs of loosing interest in the sport.Ok so after a night to sleep on it, here's my recap...
125...Dual season couldn't end fast enough for McCabe....He's done some really nice things this year... But he is definitly in a downswing right now...2 weeks to recharge the batteries, and get his focus back is needed right now....What we saw last night, was definitly not the same wrestler from earlier this year...
133...Patrick did his job...which was don't get teched or pinned vs a 2 time all american...saved 2 team points there...Think Giraldo is another one who needs a lil breather right now to get ready for B1G's.....
141...Now that's the Ash we needed to see this past week...Majoring Sabatello, and nearly majoring Cruz.... Setting the tone for the postseason.....Think mentally and physically he is ready to make a run at both!!
149... Dippery making strides this year, is wrestling his best at the right time...Hopefully can sneak into NCAA's....He can turn people, which can really payoff here!!
157...Not the best Lewis match...But good wrestlers lose those matches...Better wrestlers still win by 5 when not having their A game....Love his aggression....another one that can make a deep run!!
165...Perrotti...He's left it all on the mat this year!! Really excited to see him make one last deep run!! Going to miss seeing him out there next year....His remarkable run 2 years ago, really helped transform this program!!!
174...Bakuckas... Kid is better on his feet than he gives himself credit for...Hoping he can be aggressive, and find his offense at B1G's...If he can, he can qualify for NCAA's....
184...Gravina.... what can I say here...hmmmmm...oh yeah, we have 2 more years of this kid!!! He is mean, and nasty on the mat..Very punishing wrestler!! Just ask Brown after last night!! You think that kid wants to see Gravina across from him again? I just love watching this kid wrestle!! He just doesn't care who he is wrestling...He goes out there and gets after it every time...I think he may be the most improved wrestler on the team this year...
197... Hrymack...Like McCabe, hitting a late season swoon...Hopefully the 2 weeks can get him refocused, as this is it for him...If he can find that "Midlands magic" than maybe he sneaks into NCAA's....
285...Smith....Glad to see him get redemption for his last match at the RAC...2 evenly matched guys last night, and it showed... Has to really step it up at B1G's as I'm not sure Coon will have enough matches to get auto slot at B1G's...Snyder will be another who takes a slot....So there will be at least 1, maybe 2 less auto qualifying slots then there should be....Hopefully he can have a good showing at B1G's, and not leave it to getting a wildcard..
Overall...what does it say about the season when we beat #7 Lehigh, and that's not even the marquee win on the season!!! 7 wins vs.top 25 teams....Goodale and co. have this team moving in the right direction... B1G time!! Really looking forward to B1G's, as i really believe we should get 7 guys thru to NCAA's...Possibly 8.....Should be some very intriguing matchups at B1G's....can't wait!!
agreed, and that guy refs alot of Lehigh mathes too..so I get it.Still think he should have dinged him and made it more interesting in overtime. If it did go into overtime,I wouldn;t have doubted Gravina would have prevailed. That kid would walk into an ISIS camp and yell "I'm Catholic and I love Jesus"..lolthink that was a case of a returning NCAA finalist getting the benefit of the doubt from the ref... He wasn't blatant...But I've seen a lot less called...
Per Lehigh forum Giraldo didn't make weight, Rutgers 133-pounder failed to make weight as Steve and Gimp reported. Josh Patrick bumped up from 125; he weighed in at 132. Richie Lewis manufactured a couple of timeouts so he could catch his breath against Longo -- yeah, Rutgers is in the b1g now; two of their best guys are sucking wind. I guess that's better than an injury and hope he pulls it together for the tournament.

talk about some sour grapes...lol Lewis definitely wasn't sucking wind...I am curious about what he actually did to get called for unsportsmanlike point though..
He spit on the mat when he was getting set in the down position.
That kid has got to be the surprise of the year. I just love watching him wrestle, the kid just keeps on going after his opponent no matter what he's ranked. He's wrestling better and better as his confidence grows and his injuries heal. If he keeps going the way he is an AA is definitely in his future. This kid is truly amazing to me, he's just tough as nails. I tell my seatmates all the time that kid is starting to become my favorite wrestler he just never stops.Correct. That match shows how important getting that initial takedown and ride out is. Still miffed about Gravina. Hell of a performance. For a second I thought he was gonna pull it off. If Gravina is healthy, he can make a run in March.
Just saw your recap we are on the same wave length about this kid. That kid has got to be the surprise of the year. Watching Indiana and Appalachian State and see former Rutgers wrestler wrestling for App St, Taylor Jackson at 184.
watching split screen both Mich/Vatech...and Neb/Mizzou...some ridiculous match ups!! so many top 10 individual match ups!!
We've won many recruiting battles recently, but the one 165 pounder still stings. $$$$
Not much that coulda been done there..VT went full scholly for him...
Only 9.9 to be split up.How many wrestlers at RU would you guess are on Full Schollie ? I'm guessing Ashnault, maybe Perrotti and Smith. Many others on 1/3- 1/2 schollie ? Only 11 to be split up , correct ??

Only 9.9 to be split up.
Im sure WNG or Josh could probably answer that a lot better than I could...But I gotta figure that full scholly kids in any program are a rarity....And I also believe were still not "fully" funded as schollies here are based on in state tuition and not out of state..Which most of the other big time programs are...
Yes if VT offered a kid a full, they have a set amount of $, 9.9 and if the school decides to include out of state in that 9.9 then they just give the kid whatever a full ride is and deduct it from their total.
We have a set amount of $ and if we have no more money left to give the kid a full ride we cannot do it. Just think of a pool of say $250,000 for wrestling scholarships. How you break it up among 20-25 kids is your choice. It is like the salary cap in football or baseball. They key is to get the $250,000 raised to $300,000 + to include out of state tuition, board, etc.
Thank You. This is an excellent reply. I didn't realize their was a salary cap. Are there ways around this cap. In football, a kid can receive a track scholarship. Would an endowed scholarship count against the cap. Maybe we should start thinking outside the box. This stuff is all Greek to me.

That is not exactly how it works. You still only have 9.9 to work with, it is a big disadvantage not to have them as "out of state" dollars but it is not a salary cap or pool of money. And an endowed scholarship still counts against the 9.9(however schools love them, since they are not paying).
Ok..can we get someone to explain how it works then? Like how does a Penn St pull in monster recruiting classes.. they cant all be getting close to full
You are correct, they are not getting close to full rides. Cael is convincing some of his recruits to come without any scholly money(especially the in state kids).
Think of it this way, lets use 10 schollys and lets say it cost $10 for RU in state and $20 for out of state. If RU is fully funded for out of state schollys they have $200. However, that does not mean they can offer 20 New Jersey wrestlers a full ride. The key is to get the NJ studs as a 1/3 or 1/2 scholly and since they are in state, it is still a better deal than going out of state. Unless the equivalency schollys have changed recently, this is how they are counted.
So you're saying that Kids will pay the freight just for access to Elite Coaching. How is PSU able to bring in the best kids in the country if they only have 9.9 scholarships.
Not much that coulda been done there..VT went full scholly for him...
We still only have instate 9.9 allotment?.
In order for RU to fully fund 9.9 out of state scholarships for Wrestling, they will also have to add 9.9 out of state scholarships for a women's team, in order to comply with Title IX, so it is not as cheap as some may think. We still only have instate 9.9 allotment? If so, it is so stupid for the RU admin to not have the full out of state allotment for the wrestling scholly however way you cut it. RU sucks in every sports, and we got this program where we are in top 10, and the admin cannot make this any more competitive? That's BS and shortsighted action.

Last I checked there is no NCAA womens wrestling...So why would you have to add a full allotment of schollies, for a program, for a sport that doesn't exist? How are other programs able to fund at OOS levels then? Granted I only know a lil bit about title IX...But that doesn't seem to make much sense...
