Sanders not invited to combine

Plus he played great D. Carr may be a slightly better shooter but still think Corey has a better upside. Corey was asked to do so much more.

what was Sanders asked to do that Carr wasn't?

Carr played a higher percentage of his teams minutes. He used a higher percentage of his teams possessions. He took a higher percentage of his teams shots while on the floor. He assisted on a higher percentage of his teammates made baskets. He also got a higher percentage of offensive and defensive rebounds.

He had a better team. No team really successfully pressed against us all year. Corey rebounded extremely well. PSU did fine when Carr didn’t show up. RU not so much. Carr got more assists because PSU made shots. Reverse teams and I’d go with Corey.

Right now I don't think Corey's game translates to the NBA. He has Kemba Walker/Shabazz Napier height and finishing ability without the outside shot. That consistent perimeter shot is the difference between overseas/G-League and the NBA.

He also was a one man press break. I think teams will be challenging our ball handling as a team this year with more full and half court pressure.
He did not break the press by himself. Ball was passed back and forth between players moving up the court or over the frontline.

He's a complete liability on defense at the NBA level. Dudes will just rain threes on him to set up the pump & drive.

If he wants to make it in the NBA, he's going to need to be outstanding on the offensive end. His drives (as an undersized player) and 15 footers don't translate well to today's NBA.

Heck, local media is picking on Ben Simmon's lack of range and this dude's a legit triple-double threat every night.

Does anybody other than West Virginia even run a press anymore? Is that still a thing in college basketball?

I think most of the college hoops world and professional scouts would take Carr over Sanders every day of the week. He was more highly rated coming out of high school and was far more efficient playing against the same competition in the Big Ten while carrying an even heavier load.

It is hard to run a press every play. Especially when you are a team that is limited to five players who can play on both sides of the court.

Basketball is played best when speed of game is mix. Know when to go, and when to slow. When to press, when to catch your breath after an offensive possession that required four rebounds.

Bob Huggins would disagree with you-----especially the " catch your breath part ". :):):)

If you are a perimeter player in the NBA and you can't shoot, you will eventually be exposed by good defensive teams. That's what happened to Simmons against the Celtics. The fact that he's a potential triple double machine without a jump shot is a testament to his talent and the fact that he has the size of a center and the handle of a point guard. If he develops even a serviceable jump shot, he'll be unstoppable.

My guess is he will make himself into a decent shooter-----then look out.

That's a heck of a stretch Irish. If he could make himself a better shooter, he would have done it already. At best he is a 15 ft. shooter, great for High School, and Kean U., but not so much for the NBA I think Cory will always be what he is, a very athletic, coordinated person, who just happened to pick basketball. A sport that has limitations based on abilities.,And I believe he has reached his full potential in the sport. Too bad he didn't pick football, would have made a great receiver. Of course that also is an assumption.

The player I compare Corey to is Melo Trimble from Maryland and honestly I think Trimble had a better career of the 2. Once Trimble went undrafted I never thought Sanders had a chance. Corey might be a bit more athletic but needs to find his outsede shot to be more effective. Hopefully he can develop on a Gleague team or find a decent career in Europe

I didn't see Ponds of St. John's on the combine list either.

Sanders shot 21% from 3. Ponds shot 25%. Neither guy has the skillset teams are looking for right now.

(I will note that Ponds shot 38% last season, while Sanders' career high was 31%).

Quite frankly I can't think of a player in the last 5-10 years that compares to Sanders.

It's hard to look at those videos and say that Sanders has been working on his weaknesses.

Nonetheless, he will make a living somewhere. He is a great kid.

Pretty telling that Corey wasn’t invited to work out for the Nets, as they had a few small guards come in, including Ponds and Farrell.

Friend of mine was looking at some mock draft sought that predicted he goes #29 to Brooklyn

Is your “friends name” Corey Sanders?
No he’s a big Knicks fans, cares zero about college hoops and has spent the last week surfing draft sites to figure out who the Knicks pick. I offered to bet that CS does not get drafted and he declined the offer.

I would like to see this mentioned mock draft lol. I dont see him anywhere to be considered. At best this is how it plays out, summer league invites -> G-League -> realize Europe/China will pay him a considerable wage

Magic Johnson type player------will improve his shot as Magic did------HOF player------when they get Lebron next year look out

LOL. Just realized you were referring to Ben Simmons when the only shooter not improving his shot I was talking about in this thread was Corey Sanders.

Simmons? He's a great talent but I'm also not sold he will ever have a consistent jump shot. I mean maybe, but Magic never really improved much as a shooter other than some tiny sample size seasons late in his career. Magic made over 6000 career regular season FGs of which 325 were 3s at a 30% clip. He had 3 seasons ever with more than 60 attempts and he shot 31%, 32%, and 38% in those seasons.

Lol Corey does read these boards BTW. Friend of mine is tight with Deshawn Freeman and they are all aware that they are discussed on the RU boards, and naturally like any 20 year old would, they are curious to read. Corey especially because he looks for fuel

Well, I’ve always felt like - follow your dream, no matter how big - and it’s easy to prove people wrong. I did it my entire life. Good luck to both fine young men!
