Scouting Washington

Washington Defense: strong vs the pass, weak vs the run.

Washington Offense: decent running game, barely average passing game.

Washington OL: horrible .. gave up something like 32 sacks last season.

Washington Secondary: best in the conference.

Interesting AlaskaDawg. That was last year. Do you see any of the areas that you think we're subpar improving this year like the OL?

OL returned 4 starters but it's still one of the youngest OL's in the conference. They look better than last year according to Washington beat writers but they still look shaky not to mention the OL lacks depth. At least this season the UW QB has a year's experience under his belt so hopefully he knows when to dump the ball before he goes down.

Defense is about the same as last season... its the strength of that team.

I'm a Rutgers optimist and am totally rooting for a Rutgers upset/close-call, but after doing some Washington scouting, it looks like (to me at least) that there is one position for each side of the ball that really needs to step up, in order to make this game really interesting. It's probably pretty obvious, but I think it gets magnified in this game.

For our defense, it is definitely going to be our linebackers. Assuming best case scenario, we get a lot of pressure with our DL, we still have to handle the short/medium passes and the RB runs. Gaskin...this dude looks fast and pretty elusive from his Youtube highlights. Not necessarily a bruiser, but he can break through the occasional arm tackle. If our tackling is poor like from seasons past, I think we'll be in a world of hurt right then and there. Hopefully, going against Grant and Bailey in practice will prepare us for that elusiveness that we'll probably see.

For our offense, of course, it is the quarterback. We all know our O-line and RB's is respectable/decent, but if our QB-WRs combo can't keep them honest, we'll be right back to last year. Dinkin' and dunkin' and coming up short. If that is the case, Mehringer better have one hell of a gameplan.

Interesting take Dawg, and by that oversimplified analysis, if RU Runs a lot, and our DL performs, RU could pull the upset. But Coach Peterson is not going to let it be that simple. . . .Looking forward to a good game.

At least he's good with the ladies if this is the case. It's good to be the QB. ;)
I'd be surprised if Browning has got laid yet. He's a shy nerd kid through and through. He hates doing interviews and it takes a team of mules to get him in front of the mic.

The link I posted up above (Ten takeaways from fall camp) gives a decent idea of the strengths and weaknesses. The problem is that there is absolutely zero film on a Chris Ash Rutgers team. Petersen can only prepare them so much but it's difficult to game plan for a team that you don't have any film on so to say.

Joking aside, Laviano also hates talking to media. Difference is that he seems very well liked by his teammates even if he has turned off media members and fans in the past.

One of Gaskin's biggest strengths is that fact he's small. He hides behind the tackles and peeks his head around to see what lanes are open. A lot of times the defense won't see him until he decides to leave the safety of the OT and go for it.

Huge unknown. Ash said today that no QB is game ready. Guess is Laviano gets the start, and Ash pulls the plug quickly if things don't go well. Wondering if some time during the year a third option will emerge--Giovanni Rescigno.
I thought RU got a QB transfer from some other school. btw what's with all the damn Italians on RU's roster ...

Laviano and Zach Allen (TCU transfer) are apparently neck and neck. Allen has legs, but apparently he does not throw as well as Laviano (if that is accurate--and if it is, that is a problem since Laviano is not known for arm strength/accuracy).

If alaskadawg is correct... Our DL vs their OL should be a big point for us. I wasn't sure there would be a spot where we might dominate... And by all accounts our OL should be improved. If we can win the trenches.. We are almost there for an upset!

Huge Italian population in Nj/NY area. But I think Gio is from Michigan, we like Italians.
My dad's side of the family is old school New York Dutch ..they came to NYC when it was known as New Amsterdam .. way back in 1644. I can remember my grandad making wisecracks about Italians but he was just joking. Italians are all right. :)

Not a bad matchup for us against a ranked team. Dawg's giving me hope for the upset. We may need a big game from Grant though. Have him break free on a couple of plays.

Sports Illustrated ranks Washington at #7, ahead of Ohio State at #9. It will be a tough test for us. Long distance road game against a top ten opponent.
Still mad I can't go. Went out for Washington State and just loved it out there.

Pac 12 is the most physically under-rated conference in the country.
Expect Washington to be very physical upfront on both sides of the ball

Extremely difficult opening game on the road in a hostile environment.
I forgot about the noise and potentially a new QB. 5 yards here and there for delay of game or jumping off and having a hard time calling plays can really ruin an offense.
