Sounds like the QB situation still isn't settled and Ash wasn't happy with the continued inconsistency at the position. Scrimmage overall didn't seem to go well but Ash blames that on just being tired two weeks into camp. Hopefully we settle on a QB soon.

if theyre not ready in 2 weeks there wont be much diff after 4 weeks

offense is gonna be a rebuilding process. not really news though i guess.

Give this staff some time, who was happy with the qb play last year. Fridge made a huge difference w Nova.

or maybe --- the D is much better than anyone else wants to think.......

I expect Laviano to start with Allen getting significant time.....

Chris Ash disagrees.

Not game-ready yet," Ash said. "We've got two weeks to continue to prepare, but how many teams in America are game-ready after two weeks of practice? Probably not very many. We need to keep going and keep getting better."

I expected that Ash would come out with " the QB's look great and we are going to kick some ass this year, both are that good".

. "Chris is a returning starter. At the end of the day, everybody says we've got a quarterback concern. Well, we do, but we do have a returning starting quarterback in the Big Ten.

"We'll see if he ends up being the starter, but Chris is here (at the ceremony) because he's given a lot to the program."

Our QB is here next yr (st petes)
Lewis isn't even going to be the full time starter at SPP. Kid is going to need some time. Plus we are still going to have Laviano, Allen and Odin here next year.

I agree. Do not confuse Lewis with Wimbush....huge, huge difference.

CL seems more comfortable in a leadership role and the team seems to be buying in . Unfortunately , his accuracy doesn't seem much better. CL will be named starter but Allen will play plenty too.
OL seems to have it together and will be a strength on the team.
RB's look really good and will also be solid contributors.
WR's dont seem to get any separation. Combine that with inaccurate QB and you see what the O will be up against. Run game can could be decent if passing game is good enough to prevent other teams putting 8 ( or more ) in the box.

DL is obviously the strength of the team. They need to be at least as good as advertised (or better) for the team to have any success.
LB Adequate at best. Thin in numbers and talent. Hopefully the strength of DL will help them out.
DB This is my pick to be the surprise unit of the team. There were a few busted coverages but overall the WR's has lots of trouble getting open.
K hhhmmm, I'm not sure what to say other than anywhere outside the 25 yard line we are in 4 down territory. As far as KO's, a state as populated as NJ must have someone that can get the ball past the 10 yard line no?

A sobering look at where the team is today. Not surprising to most RU fans. Hopefully the QB and WR positions keep improving as we head towards the opener.

Yes. I was lucky enough to be on the field
Few questions.

Tsimis had a nice TD catch. Who threw it?

Did Grant or Bailey separate? There was a tweet showing Grant that said speed kills. What was that?

Did Harris play?

Nothing of note from Agudosi or Patton?

Maybe our DBs made an amazing transformation and made the WRs look bad?:grimace:

Yeah I have been saying this has not been an exciting camp for QB s and ash and staff have been less than enthused for sure. No one stepped up and grabbed it. It is more a default choice and no one wants it.

I think Ash is the real deal but he's not David Blaine. This is going to take some time but the ship is definitely heading in the right direction. The S&C is doing wonders. These kids now look like a Big 10 team physically. With Ash drilling competitiveness into the kids and the vastly improved S&C, i think most will be pleasantly surprised. That being said, IMO, looking at the schedule 6 wins and "better" losses will be a good year. Getting to a bowl game should be the main goal. Not as much for the game but for the extra month of practice bowl teams get. We lose many seniors so getting kids extra practice in December would be a huge positive. The pain and suffering from Floods last 2 classes hits next year not this one.

This is basically how I've felt the team would perform this fall based on personnel. Thanks for the bucket of cold water, some people here need a reality check regarding our current talent.

Grant broke a PR and scored a long one on a busted coverage

Did Harris play?

Nothing of note from Agudosi or Patton? Agudosi made a nice grab on 2pt conversion

I'm hoping that is the case

I just want to see our QB use good mechanics. Tired of seeing our QB throw off his back foot into triple coverage.

Or inability to recognize blitz packages, or coverages.

Just give me some fundamentally sound QB play, and I'm good.

and yes, I'd dump the entire QB roster for Wimbush.

Seems to me like Ash has the highest level of standards as regards game readiness.

As of Aug. 20, there are 18 players who no longer wear the black stripe. But when the Scarlet Knights travel to play Washington on Sept. 3, they will dress 70 players for the season opener. "I hope we've got 22. If not we've got a problem,'' Ash quipped, when asked about how many players he needs to be considered game-ready. "But once we get through the scrimmage (Saturday), there will be opportunities to take off, hopefully, quite a few. There's quite a few guys who have been doing it. I just want to see the scrimmage before we do it. Through the course of next week we'll remove quite a few of the guys that have been doing a great job this camp.''

There was an article out a few weeks ago where Mike Leach talked about the mistake most coaches make when recruiting QBs. He says never to recruit a QB that doesn't have accuracy and think you can change that bc you either have that or you don't. In his opinion, too many coaches fall in love with the athletic abilities of QBs, size, arm strength, etc and think they can just fix accuracy but that never really works out. Hopefully he's wrong about that bc j don't think the accuracy part gets fixed next year either. Even our recruit QB's weakness is accuracy.

6 wins would be an amazing season. If Ash conjures up 6 wins than he will have the Banks buzzing in no time. With that said, 4 wins shouldn't have anyone discouraged by any means, because that's the range 3-5 we should actually end up.

Agreed, you can't fix accuracy, just like you can't fix speed, but you ought to be able to improve thinking and decision-making, with intensive training and repitition, so deciding which QB is best equipped to start is definitely tough. For me, if accuracy and decision-making are reasonably equal between Laviano and Allen (and I don't know if they are, just speculating), I'd take Allen, since he clearly has better wheels.

Nice posts. Actually, this is good to hear from someone who apparently has seen a lot more than most people and appears to have a good sense of the team's strengths and weaknesses. I've been thinking 5 wins was mostly likely (with less blowouts), with 6 being a bit of a stretch and 4 being a disappointment. Agree getting to a bowl and getting the extra practices would be pretty big.

Lewis isn't the full time starter at SPP? Huh? I did not know that.

Next year has the potential to be a 3-9 type season....

That's why I think it's very important to get to a bowl this year and finish recruiting strong for the '17 class. That way we can get off to a strong start with the 2018 class and then hold on for dear life as the season plays out...
