Seattle Times: Huskies, a 26-point favorite against Rutgers, eager for Saturday’s season opener

Some pretty cocky comments under the story:

Rutgers is a home pre-season like game

UW likes to schedule many of these poor quality home games

Season starts in 4 weeks

Hard to believe the Huskies are only a 26-point favorite. Huge amount of money to be made betting on UW to cover.

Did someone guarantee a win... ?

@DoubleDawgDareYa @tsgt I will - no way a Chris Petersen team will have the colossal choke necessary to lose this game. Does anyone really think I'm going out on limb here?

I remember Iowa State fans feeling the same way. These West Coast teams all think that their brand of football is way better than East Coast. They play a very offensive type of ball, with little regard to Defense. Which is the reason that any team which does play a little D will prosper. See Washington. I think we shock these people, and win this game, outright!
I was at the Washington State game last year, they were cocky, and yes they won. But, they shouldn't have, scheme lost that game for us. Can't play 10-12 yards off of WR's and expect to win. Reactionary football goes against the very nature of what the game is all about. I'm just surprised more coaches don't realize this simple fact.
Ash get's it, and hopefully be displayed on the 3rd. my birthday BTW, and I expect a huge Birthday present!
Go RRRRRRRRRRRRRR UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

It was 25 points months ago. The fact it went up and not down tells you all you need to know. Take the points, this won't be a pretty game guys

Yeah, it tell's me that there are a lot of delusional Cougar fans, as the article outlined. And, they are betting big on their 7 win team from last year. You won't find an easier way to make some money, then betting on RU.

The way the press and the fans of Washington think, we won't be able to rush the ball against them..... Watch our run game early on, to me it is the key.... Their D line is massive, but will it stifle us all day long?

I think we can make it a game, I think Washington will put up a lot of points, but we must answer.

A couple of chance interactions with opposing fans you always seem to remember...... I had a North Carolina shop owner (2006) ask me, why are you here?, basically saying why do you bother.. Much the same for the away Arkansas game....

I rode the subway into NYC,
and was next to the parents of an Iowa state player..... You could see the attitude, even without words, pretty much, that they were going to pummel us.

We do get overlooked from time to time.

I remember the first bowl win in Texas. Out in the parking lot before the game, I had Kansas St. fans telling me that the only thing they may be concerned about was Ray Rice.
The following morning at breakfast was like watching the walking dead. KSU fans with a blank stare everywhere.
Now, I fully understand that these two teams are very different, just remembering a very fond couple of days a long time ago,

Over my limit of articles read from the Seattle Times. When I google the article title and click on links, it all leads back to Seattle Times stating I'm over my limited. Bummer. Would love to read these articles, however, don't want to spend the time buying a trial subscription and then cancelling

WHile I dont think we win, 26 points would not help me feel good about this season's success, lets hope we can surprise them

I have coached good and bad teams in my life and until Rutgers comes out and proves they are not a bad team this is how we are going to be treated.

The people who set these lines aren't dumb; it's their job and they aren't in it to have the house lose. Does 26 seem like a really high number to us? Sure. But there are reasons.

We have a completely new coaching staff and a completely new offensive system in its first game (and having lost its best player in Carroo) going up against a good defense with a massive DLine. As we saw last year, if we have trouble running the ball, it's a wildcard whether Laviano can beat a team with his arm. So we may have a tough time scoring points.

On the other side, we're going against an experienced QB who knows his system, has a good OLine and, most important, speedy WRs going against what was statistically one of the worst defenses in the country last year--especially our secondary. So we may have a tough time stopping them score.

I think it's fair to say that our defense, however, is going to be improved by leaps and bounds from last year. Bottom line, in my view, our defense is the key to covering the spread. I think they do and I think all of us watching the game come away impressed by our effort and toughness on both sides of the ball through four quarters, which I expect to see all year.

The only thing a line tells you this early is about perception. Vegas is trying to get action on this game and right now Washington is getting the action. If I was to suddenly drop a million on Rutgers the line would drop, does that mean the team got better?

I don't expect many wins this year but I would like to see us stop the 3-4 non-competitive losses that we've had the last few years. If we get smoked by UW it doesn't change anything; this is a team in transition. But, if we go out there and play well I think it's a really positive sign. I'm hopeful.

Their fans are overlooking us, not their team. Petersen's Boise State teams pounded weaker opponents.
We are going to have to be genuinely good, taking them by surprise won't happen.
+1000 He's no Mike Lynch and that's a compliment

A lot of novice gamblers in this thread haha. A strong dose of reality is on the way. Future still bright though.

As I posted in an earlier thread, I'm thinking that both offenses struggle a tad coming out of the box, so I'm taking the points and the under.

How many people are going to continue to confuse Wazzou with Washington?

The line has nothing to do with the score of the game - the line is set so the house can even out the money going to each side of the game. Ideally the house wants the same amount of money bet on each team and they make their money on the vig. Evidently it is currently taking 26 points to even out the money being bet on the game. That's all it represents.

I would never root against RU, but Washington will more than likely cover, if not, they win by around 21-24 points.
They are a loaded team.

Hope it's a good learning experience and no significant injuries for RU.

That is 100% not true and the biggest misconception about sports gambling. I saw a documentary featuring the head linemaker at a big Vegas casino. He flat out said that he looks for chances to beat the public and finds them routinely. I think it's Mike Missanelli who refers to them as "a line that tells you something."
And a line moving absolutely can mean something, although a 1 point move is probably not enough to mean anything big. A big move means the sharps are betting heavy on one side, and they are surely better than we are at gambling.

As we all know the betting line fluctuates as bettors bet.... If I am not mistaken, the opening line, set by the brainiacs in Vegas, had it around 27 points..... We have had go Up a point, down a point or two, sine then

Thus, the early line seems to still be the current figuring, pretty much.... Vegas thought we lose by almost 4 td's early on, and the current thinking of the bettors has kept it near there.....

Not much to really discuss about the betting line......

I think it opened around 22.

They are starting to convince me that this game is going to be a disaster. Worse case scenario is Washington starts with their defense, their lineman crash down on Laviano, he fumbles the ball and they take it in for a TD in the first 30 seconds. Then they kick to someone other than Grant, he fumbles it and Washington takes it in for another TD in 20 seconds. Before we figure out how to stream it on the internet the score is 21 - 0. The final score might be 102 - 3 and all the Washington fans swamp our board making fun of us.

If we lose by 26+ it's going to be another long Flood-like season. Then we have to play OSU, MSU, Michigan and Iowa which are also likely to be blow-outs. I'm hoping and praying that we start the season right, play solid defense keeping it a close game with a shot to win at the end, and therefore build team confidence for the rest of the season. We need to show up for the opener in big way, demonstrating power and domination in the trenches, while running the ball successfully. Our defense must show improvement over the past 2 statistically dismal seasons. Let's hope the team is motivated enough to give HCCA his first ever college coaching victory.

Best place to bet this game? I don't bet, so not familiar with the reliability of the online sites, but this seems like too good a line to not throw a few bucks on.
