See Jerry Carino's 3/11 Article on 8 Coaching Candidates for RU

given the Chris Ash hire I would not be surprised to see Hobbs come up with someone not on the above lists who can bring energy and charisma to the job. The basketball culture, like football, needs to change and RU needs someone who can not only coach but represent the program with both a positive confident image and enthusiasm. (They will also need to weather some tough times and not lose focus on the task at hand)

Off of the OP's clues, isn't it the Schmidt he's referring to?

After reading the post again. I think your right because he's been mentioned often on this board. Would be a great hire for us given our situation.

I do not want Schmidt. Would be a huge jump. No experience at high major even as AC. Pikiell is also worrisome. While he played at Yukon he an asst at GW for Karl Hobbs who had some success but recruited some low character kids and got canned. And Im not sure how good he was as a UCON asst. - was there for one year before bouncing around minor league pro hoops and D3. Lonergan is the only 1 on this perceived list who would be a good hire. Like him ahead of Sendek and Danny but I doubt hes really interested. Has a good gig at GW and could move up. Doesnt need to go to RU. Alot like Archie.

I can't go into a lot of details, but I've heard from multiple people that the perceived leading candidate is not the leader. Remember, it's not just selecting a head coach. It's being onboard with what comes with them.

I assume you mean Hurley. He issued the following statement when he turned down the job last time in 2013. The same article actually stated he wanted an 8 year deal.

"For me, my family loves Rhode Island, loves the people there. We've adjusted really, really well to living outside of New Jersey for the first time in our lives," Hurley said Sunday on ESPN Radio's "The Ian O'Connor Show." "Two of my three years as a college coach have been in rebuilding situations, and that's a tough thing to go through. It takes a lot of energy and a lot of wear and tear on you."

Those Hurley quotes don't sound like a man interested in a rebuild, and Pat should take notice.

Sounds like Lonergan is the front runner...can see a deal reached wih him this week if he wants it. Masiello and Pikeill Stony Brook coach as back ups...would like Sendek in the mix

I have no inside info.

I am only advising that from what was communicated to me last weekend - on Hobbs' 2 top choices - that the "Realistic / Candidate #2" is included in Carino's list of candidates.

Hobbs' top choice is not financially feasible for RU (in my opinion) and even if he was - he'd be crazy to come here - as he'll have the pick of the litter of many big schools - when he decides to move on from his current school.

The above "realistic" candidate in all likelihood will not be in the Dance - and thus - it's possible that if this candidate is interested in RU and Hobbs is indeed interested in him - then it's a perfect marriage.

Why it could happen:

- He has been very successful as a HC throughout his career
- He's affordable given his current compensation and RU's Financial Parameters
- His next move should be to a P5 Conference and for which his raise will be significant.
- He fits the mold / stereotype of a Big 10 HC

Why it may not happen:

- He currently has a nice gig and future with his current school
- His personal life may hinder a move to NJ

Thus if the latter occurs - then by all accounts we're probably looking at Hurley or Sendek as HC - which would be fine.

Personally, if this candidate is hired - I think it'll be a great move for RU and for the candidate as well - and I would hire him over Hurley or Sendek fwiw.
Then it's Lonergan. Thanks Phil. I think he would be the best of the bunch listed. He's proven. He can recruit and I'm sure he will have the same demands as Hurley as in Rutgers must make a promise to make men's BB as high a priority as football.
