Semi OT: Cam Spencer commits to UConn

I know he's not on social media but you'd think he'd at least figure out a way to say thanks and bye publicly somehow. I guess he doesn't care, but way to burn bridges.

Fernandes is a traitor
Cam was a traitor in RU uniform
Hyatt is a traitor
Pikiell is a traitor
Most people reading this is/was.a traitor

Get over it already. If RU offered him what UCONN did I am sure he’d still be here.

You had a point until you didn’t….

Didn’t he not allow Rutgers to counter-offer? If so, your last sentence is bullshit

Full page ad in the Star Ledger?
Maybe fly a sign behind a plane down the shore?

Nope - he didn’t have a point. Not one of those guys accepted grad school admission to the school they left. None of them had assured the teams they departed from all off season that they’d be back and then just bolted without a trace this way so late.

Nobody is faulting the kid for leaving. It’s the way he did it.

I actually agree with you. He has a minor point in that any transfer could he consider a “traitor” to the school he left. But I totally agree that the WAY Cam did it was a particularly douchebag move
Rutgers could have tried to match if they they wanted, there is no indication that had any interest in matching $250k+.

Hard to make an offer when cam apparently made it clear he wasn’t going to accept RU offers

I mean, seriously, this is very well known at this point and had been known from very early on

Did you actually not know this or are you choosing to ignore it?

Man, what an ugly way for this guy to end his time at RU.

And hey, I get it; money talks. (Not that it never did. It's just that now players can be paid openly rather than under the table.)

Regardless, though, while I do get the cold, hard, emotionless financial aspect of it all, there's still a right way and a wrong way to do something...and then there's the dipsh!t way. -And in this case Cam appears to have gone all in on the final option.

Well, I doubt we'll be seeing him making any "nostalgic" visits back to the RAC/JMAC once his playing days are over, (and that's probably just as well for all concerned).

Cam choose what’s good for cam

He is entitled to do that

I’m also entitled to root against him and the huskies

Correct. And to be clear, he could’ve handled this like Myles did (as an example). All he had to do upfront was say he wasn’t sure of his graduate plans if he was considering exploring the portal. Attending RU grad school would’ve been one of several options. Clearly, he did not want Pike to have any idea he was thinking of leaving until he was actually able to do so officially.

A player at an organization shouldn’t have to counteroffer.

I know you hate NIL, but there are still major differences between college sports and a pro sports organization. Most notably, there’s no budgeted salary cap like in pro sports where your point would have more validity to it (i.e. argument could be made then that the franchises themselves are prioritizing their limited resources).

In college right now, there’s no limit as the teams themselves are not the funders. Also, offers technically aren’t even allowed by other sources until you are actually in the portal, so it’s unreasonable to expect RU to overpay everyone to minimize the risk of another team reaching out with a potential offer vs. negotiating when it happens

The bottom line is NIL doesn’t completely shatter the concept of loyalty to a team (see Mag situation as an example). Money is now an additional variable in the equation but it is not the only one. Fact remains that every other departure from RU hoops in recent history except for Eugene had the courtesy to provide proper notice or at least attempted to work with RU to settle on a fair contract to stay.

Good point which further erodes the “traitor” comment by @Greene Rice FIG

Myles left - and he was a HUGE loss at the time but few if any called him a “traitor” and he received well-deserved applause when he returned to the RAC last year. You could tell he really appreciated the reaction from the RU faithful.

Also don’t think anyone considered Mathis a traitor. He was an important player for us. But I think most understand why he wanted a change. Wouldn’t expect a single BOO from an RU fan if he was spotted at the RAC

Just proves that it’s not the leaving - it was the WAY he did it.

In this free agency world you can’t blame a kid for getting his $worth$ but to do it in the sneaky way he did and not even let RU counter?!?!

Sorry - he deserves the negativity from RU fans . No standing ovation for Cam if he returns to the RAC ;)

How much NIL is UConn rolling out vs Rutgers and then the rest of the teams that was bidding for his services ?
You will never get an accurate answer to this question unless a financial reporting requirement is established. Right now it's all a bunch of rumors and innuendo from outside third party handlers. Not any clearer than when it was all done under the table.

Ryen Russiello had Bruce Feldman on his podcast the other day and he was throwing a lot of cold water on the numbers being thrown around. I think he was talking more about football than basketball but he readily acknowledged things are a mess and are only going to get worse. Carry on with the Cam hate.

Both you and PSAL have it exactly right.

Myles handled his situation with class, and as such was welcomed back with open arms to the RAC/JMAC, and deservedly so.

Spencer, on the other hand, gave Pike nothing less than the "Cam shaft", and the bad taste left by that move, regardless of any financial pragmatism involved, will undoubtedly be remembered for a long time.

Hope Cam likes getting called all kinds of mf’s by loose cannon Danny, because that’s how practice goes with that coach
UConn just won the national championship and will be ranked in the top ten this season.Rutgers fans need to focus their attention on improving the teams 3 point scoring which would have been abysmal without Spencer last season.

So the guy went to the team most likely to go to the Final Four ... for presumably more money ... and everyone is upset? Sorry, that's what you signed up for when your golden boy led the fight to invalidate all of the NCAA's rules.

Agreed. He left after publicly stating that he was returning.

Cam made his decision but I think he just might not enjoy the way he might be treated by Danny. Supposedly Danny has worked to improve his behavior but I have seen him often and he has a very bad temper and one of the foulest mouths that I have ever heard. No one deserves to be treated the way I have seen him talk to his players. I often find it hard to believe that administration can allow his actions. Steve loves and cares for his players so much but Cam jumped for the money. I doubt he will get as many minutes he got at RU. We shall see.

No rutgers fans don’t need to focus on that. That’s the coaches focus. Rutgers fans can focus on whatever the f they want including a player leaving the way cam did and going to a program that’s gonna make them very salty and rightfully so.

I get that some fans go too hard with the venom. At the same time it is weird when the response by other fans is to put down our program.
