Should've been fouling Happ down the stretch and a few other thoughts...

I don't quite understand why, down 7-10 points in the last 2-3 minutes, we wouldn't have gone Hack-a-Happ down the stretch, fouling him in the 1:1 possessions, to save clock time and get the ball back, given he's a 46% FT shooter this year. With 2 minutes left, down 5, we could've done that, but let Happ get a basket and then it looked like we tried to do that with about 1:20 left, down 5 again, but that's when EO made that really dumb hook-and-hold flagrant foul. Not saying we would've won, but maybe they get a couple of less points and it's a 3 point game instead of a 5 point game very late.

Other than that, we played a nearly perfect first half, except the last 2 minutes and played a not-so-good second half, especially the first 4 minutes, losing what once was a 10 point lead. But some of that was Wisconsin being really good and some of it was us just not taking great shots and not hitting the difficult shots. And a little bit of it was the refs looking the other way on Happ - guy should've had 2 or 3 fouls in the first half, which really could've made this a different game - 2nd straight game with a huge foul differential (19-11 tonight). Still, liked seeing us not let it become a blowout and closing back within 5 a few times. We're close, I think. Really wanted this one.

Geo again had a subpar 2nd half - we're not going to win B1G games against top echelon B1G teams with Geo having poor games (15 on 6 of 17). EO with 17/7, which is great, but a few boneheaded plays. Thiam with only 2 and only 2 points Doorson and Myles, combined, is bad - another very quiet game from Myles, who is struggling. But great game by Carter with 9/4 - nice to see him play well. Would've liked to see Kiss shoot more, with 12 on 5-11 shooting and he had 5 boards and 4 assists. Not a lot of Mathis on the court, but Harper had some nice moments (when not shooting treys, lol).

the one play where he should have been fouled is where Doorson had him as the clock was running down....Shaq has to step in and put the body on him not back away..make him earn it and that point in the game

Boy do I agree with this - surprised Pike didn’t call for that. I bet they make this adjustment next time around.

Before that possession you could see Coach Young tell Eugene to foul Happ. Not sure why Shaq didn't, after they got switched.

I didn't agree with fouling Happ....we played solid 1 on 1 defense and forced Happ to score 2 pointers vs assists for 3s or giving away 1 point on a possession when you may not allow any points.

In a 5 to 7 point game, take away the layup on the botched handoff at the start of 2nd half and a 5 point lead went to 1 instantly.

Yep, that was the one with 2 minutes left, although that was at the end of the shot clock - would rather do that earlier in the clock, but the worst thing is letting Happ score in that situation instead of fouling before the shot.

You appear to be speaking in general - I was only talking about fouling down the stretch for fouls 7/8/9 in the one and one.

It was getting to the point where I felt Omoruyi or Kiss was going to clock him. At a certain point, he just needed a hard foul to send him to the deck.

I think our only chance in the last 2 1/2 minutes was to foul Happ. In my opinion many coaches, and Pikiell falls into this category, don’t appreciate how little time 2 minutes is: it’s just 4 30 second possessions, 2 of which the opponent controls. You’ve got to find a way to create more possessions in order to win the game. And with a terrible foul shooter as the other team’s best player, that’s even more so the best strategy.

At the very least, I'd have collapsed on him in the last 2 seconds of the shot clock every time. Sure, he could kick out to a three point shooter, but that really closes the shot clock window and reduces the risk

We had a lot of fouls to give from our bigs in the last few minutes, and I think we should have used them.
