RU is losing a home game right, losing money? How much are they getting from MSG for this game if it all, who is responsible for this? The Big 10? At this point in RU's level of hoops interest, its a bad idea but the Big 10 has used RU as the punching bag basically when it comes to scheduling times and games. Low end of the totem pole stuff..hosting a game on Jan 1. I could imagine a school like Maryland might generate more interest at MSG. Is Wisky playing OSU in hockey? If so why isnt OSU in that game....why wasnt it Wisconsin who had to sell there home game.

Maybe the New Jersey beatwriters who cover the team can dig around and ask some questions about what are the financials of giving up a conference home game that was likely to be close to a sell out. At least Hobbs knew not to charge the fans here, we probably get a weak showing up there as usual. The program just isnt ready for big games at arenas like MSG and Pru Center

Umm ... not sure if you're serious here. It's the Big Ten Super Saturday event - basketball in the morning, hockey at night. Supposed to be the same teams but we don't have hockey, so Wisconsin plays OSU after instead. Last year was the first one, it was Penn State vs. Michigan and it was a huge success. They packed the place for both games, awesome atmosphere and they both brought in their band, students, etc. Many here were complaining because both our arch rivals who we fight over this area's recruits for got to be in this Big Ten event in NYC. Well, now we get a chance to be in it and now more complaining. This is a big-time, marquee event and we should be ecstatic to participate!! Imagine the UConn and Syracuse fans crying at home, they would give their left nut to be playing in the BIG TEN showcase in NEW YORK CITY at MSG ... it must kill them to see Rutgers having success in basketball and in this type of event ... let's go have a great time and embrace the big-time mentality !!

The Big Ten will later even things out by scheduling a neutral site Rutgers / Wisconsin game in Oshkosh, instead of Madison. Plenty of ice in Oshkosh for the hockey end of the twin bill.

thats great but what does this have to do with Rutgers basketball....why isnt Wisconsin playing Ohio State in hockey, if RU does not have hockey what are we doing participating in year 2 of the event...why didnt Wisconsin give up their home game. Do you realize there will not be that many RU fans there and more Wisconsin fans for OUR home game..so tell me how we benefit by playing the game at a neutral MSG instead of a raucous RAC

Syracuse and UConn fans have tradition of winning, they would pack the place, Rutgers fans...and there are not that many of us do not have the same fervor...cant even believe you are comparing them. It may be an event that is useful for Rutgers when its actually back on its feet and competing for NCAA tourney berths but we are not at that stage now

We played UNC in mike rice first years as a home game in MSG and there was about 8000 people there ....

Bad money idea

all sorts of spin and wishful thinking in your post. By the way, the State Penn-scUM game you referenced had an announced attendance of 12K - a far cry from "packing the place" as you claimed.

Bac's post is totally in line with reality, on the other hand.

and that was part of the season ticket package...at least Hobbs was smart enough to not put this game in as well but then the question of what is the money deal with this game

I'd rather see an RU BB game at MSG, then an Ru football game at Yankee Stadium lol.
Yeah at least they get to play in an arena designed for the sport. Instead of the crappy site lines and sh*t grass they put down in Crappee Stadium.

bumping this thread. Still sort of unsure about the RU turnout for this game, with Wisconsin hockey being the 2nd part, Wisconsin should have ALOT of their fans their for the hoops game as well

But I have heard nothing in the media about financials? Is the Big 10 giving RU money for this game? Or do we get nothing for being forced to lose what would be our biggest crowd and biggest money of the season by having to move this game there per Big 10 wishes

Fair questions IMO.

I think it's all about the B1G trying to promote Rutgers' presence in New York City. It sucks that we have to give up a home game at the RAC, but it's the price we currently have to pay to be in the conference.
I heard if you call the Ticketmaster after hours and get the machine it mentions the "the Wisconsin game at the Garden." No mention of Rutgers

Don't know how specific he will get but Jerry is doing something surrounding this topic

thanks BK, I figured that eventually the press would do some digging. Hobbs on that interview a couple weeks back said this was a Big 10 decision, its just too bad because this would be the biggest crowd and probably our only shot at a sellout this year especially if the game was later in the day or at night

Let's be real honest here. The B1G owes us nothing. We are getting a financial windfall and inclusion in a great conference. Are we holding our end of the bargain up with our play on the field and the court?

Totally agree

With how absolutely pathetic a showing we are making in B10 sports across the board
We are lucky to be included in an event this BIG

Most teams would be dying to play at vaunted venues like MSG & Yankee Stadium
but RU? WE find a way to complain about EVERYTHING

I would love it if the Baseball team got to play there. Same for Hockey at the Garden if that ever happens.

But for Football? Yeah, okay (insert eye roll guy here)

And enough with the "vaunted" part. The Garden is still obviously the "The Garden" but this version of Yankee Stadium? Come on, man.

the issue is the program really isnt at the point to expect great crowds at MSG so it ends up being less than spectacular. We have trouble getting 4K at the RAC for non conference games and coming in around 6K avg for conference games. The basketball/hockey thing is a great thing but RU doesnt play hockey so it sort of negates the incredible day thing because most RU fans really do not care about the nightcap hockey match

If the league really cared about RU being competitive they wouldn't make them take peanuts compared to the other schools for so many years.

RU can't be expected to magically make teams competitive with other teams getting triple or even more money from the league. And when RU finally does get paid the same there will be a hangover from the years of being financially crippled compared to the other schools.

To keep saying RU is "lucky" to be included is lame. Based on how bad we are right now its hard to say if RU will ever catch up to these schools. It's a bad situation.

It might work out for RU fans 20 years down the road. But some of us won't live to see it. So it's just more misery.

The team playing a great team in NYC is a very good thing.

Not when there is only one great team playing.

Would be nice if this Garden match up was more Ali/Frazier 1 instead of Ali/Chuck Wepner.

I can understand people complaining about playing a home conference football game at Yankee Stadium, but one basketball game at MSG? I don't think it is a big deal.

The number 1 team in the country plays a bunch of games every year off campus at a pro arena.

Hear what you're saying but Villanova plays in Philadelphia all the time. The Verizon Center is their home away from home and it's what they do for BE and big games. Just like Seton Hall with the Roc.

It's also literally right down the road.

tOSU has hockey too so not sure why they weren't picked instead. And we saw at the Football game how many are from around here so not sure why the B1G wouldn't think they would go to this thing as well.

I have absolutely no problem with this. I kinda like it.

Now the Yankee Stadium nonsense for football is just awful.

25 miles away from campus.

When I was in school, it seemed like we played a game at the Garden almost every year, not a conference game. I saw Michael Jordan for the first time against RU in the Garden. It was a fun trip.

RU basketball will never be NYCs team, thats the issue. Villanova isnt even a comparison, they play in a 6500 arena and draw 15K plus for games at Wells Fargo. They are a part of Philly basketball. No one thinks of Rutgers as NYC at all. How many basketball programs are around the NYC area. For one I can say that schools like St Johns, UConn, Syracuse, and Seton Hall corner the market on NYC for various reasons and I have seen this proven first hand at BE tourney and other one off games. RU can certainly be a part of that I am not saying that but the idea that NYC is ours to take given our history is a stretch. Plus where our program is at, we are 4-42 in the Big 10 since we got in. Those are not the kind of the numbers that are going to generate the large turnouts that games like this are intended to.

Google maps says depending on your route...13-17 miles. But that isn't the big complaint here by some.

Considering your comments in bold, you could see why some might have an issue with this set up.

And as @G- RUnit said, I really don't mind it either (especially since it's not included in your Season Tickets package) but wouldn't want it to become a "thing" until we get Hockey. ;)

Villanova isn't a comparison because they've won 2 national championships in a little over 30 years and have been a top 25/tourney team many other years during the period.

If Rutgers had that kind of success then we could certainly become NYC's team by since we know that ain't happening we aren't going to convert the average NYC basketball fan to be a Rutgers fan.

Also there are so many more transplants to the NYC area vs. the Philly area. These transplants already have prior allegiances to big time schools who know how to win so why do they need to be a Rutgers basketball fan.

My complaint in playing in big venues right now is that Rutgers sports teams are at the bottom of most league rankings and the fan base doesn't even come close to sell out the RAC.Its putting the cart before the horse.Start winning games before participating in special events at MSG or Yankee Stadium.

Given the HUGE disparity in current payouts ($10M for RU v. $40M for full-fledged conference members), it's nearly impossible for RU to "hold up our end." Just saying . . . .
