Princeton is 8-4 so far. They are led by:
  1. 6-4 G Xavian Lee -- 15.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 5.1 apg. He shoots 43% overall and 40% from deep (20-50) - will probably be guarded by JWill
  2. 6-0 G Dalen Davis -- 11.8 ppg - oddly, he shoots 38.6% overall from the field, but better from 3-pt range at 39.7% (29-73) -- guessing JMike will get this assignment
  3. 6-7, 220 F Caden Pierce -- 11.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg - shoots 53.1% overall (52-98) and 39.1% from deep (9-23)
  4. 6-1 G Blake Peters -- 9.9 ppg -- he takes almost exclusively 3-point shots, as 76 out of his 81 shots were from deep, and he has connected on 30-76 for 39.5%
  5. 6-7, 207 F Malik Abdallahi -- 6.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg in about 16 minutes per game - has not taken any threes
  6. 6-9, 230 F/C Philip Byriel -- 5.8 ppg, 2.1 rpg, but he takes a lot of threes (18-45 for 40%)
Princeton has taken almost 50% of their shots from 3-pt range (339 out of 703) and are shooting a healthy 38.3% from deep (130-339). My guess is that we will see less of Ogbole and more of Sommerville and Martini in this game, and will probably see some Dylan Grant too, as Princeton does not have many "big" guys, and the bigs they play shoot threes (except for Abdallahi). I would bet we will see Ace Bailey playing some center in this game too.

Here are their game results and key stats:
  • 81-80 W over Iona at home - Lee with 27, Pierce 18, Huggins 12, Davis 10 -- shot 8-26 from 3-pt range (31%)
  • 75-68 W over Duquesne at CURE Arena (they must love playing there, LOL) -- Davis and Pierce was 17 apiece, Lee with 13, and Peters with 13 off the bench -- shot 11-24 from 3-pt range (46%)
  • 79-76 W@ Northeastern -- Davis with 25, Lee with 12, Pierce with 10, Peters with 18 off the bench on 6-8 from deep -- overall shot 10-26 from 3-pt range (38.5%)
  • 68-73 L to Loyola-Chicago at home -- Davis and Lee with 17 apiece, Pierce and Abdallahi with 11 apiece -- shot 10-22 from 3-pt range (45.5%)
  • 68-57 W @ Merrimack -- Pierce with 18, Davis with 16, Lee with 10, Abdallahi with 8, Peters with 8 off the bench -- shot 10-22 from 3-pt range (45.5%)
  • 62-80 L vs. Wright State at Myrtle Beach Invitational -- Lee with 14 -- team shot 20-57 overall (35%) and 8-27 from 3-pt range (29.6%), so just an overall bad shooting night
  • 80-83 L vs. Texas State at Myrtle Beach Invitational -- Lee with 30, Peters with 17 (starting), Davis with 11 -- shot 12-29 from 3-pt range (41.4%)
  • 94-67 W vs. Portland at Myrtle Beach Invitational -- Pierce with 15, Peters with 14 (starting), C.J. Happy (6-9, 226 F) with 16 off the bench, Abdallahi with 10 off the bench, they basically played everybody in a laugher -- they shot 16-44 from 3-pt range (36.4%)
  • 99-63 W over Nazareth at home -- Byriel with 12, Happy with 18 off the bench, another game where everybody played in a laugher -- shot 18-45 from 3-pt. range (40%)
  • 77-69 W @ St. Joe's -- Lee with a triple double (18, 13, 10), Byriel with 18 (6-8 threes), Pierce with 16, Peters with 12 off the bench -- shot 11-25 from 3-pt. range (44%)
  • 63-69 L @ Furman -- Lee with 16, Davis with 13, Pierce with 11 -- shot 6-19 from 3-pt. range (31.6%)
  • 71-67 W over Monmouth at home -- Lee with 23, Davis with 11, Peters with 14 off the bench -- shot 10-30 from 3-pt range (33.3%)
Bottom lines:
  • Lee, Davis, Pierce, and Peters are the main threats, but can't sleep on Abdallahi in the post or Byriel off the bench as a stretch 4/5
  • They're going to shoot A LOT of threes and are likely going to HIT a lot of threes -- the team cannot get down in the dumps about it, just have to keep chopping and execute on offense, while hoping to "limit" their threes -- the goal should be to make them work and to limit them to single digit made threes.

Well it we double and leave the 3 point line open that is just poor coaching; we have to make them try and score from inside and I will take my chances

Thanks for the good breakdown. I just hope they don't defend the Free Throw line nearly as well as SHU and PSU. 😉

Rutgers always has problems defending Princeton's back door cuts and 3 point shooting. What has been more concerning is Rutgers lack of a half court offense with dribble drives and passes to the corners for three pointers.Princeton would easily win this game if Bailey and Harper weren't playing. In Rutgers case they don't have the right combination of offense/defense to blow out opponents which means another nail biter type game.

Xavian Lee is very, very good off the bounce, but we can't fall into the trap of doubling him on PnR or sagging down if he dribble drives, as he will kick it out to any one of 3 or 4 shooters on the wing, and they will kill us from deep. We just have to live with guarding him straight up and let them try and beat us making twos instead of threes.

The other problem with overplaying the 3-pt line is, like you said, the back door cuts. Our defenders need to have their heads on a swivel, guarding their man tight enough to avoid quick spot-up threes but watching for the cuts.

This is going to be another meat-grinder of a game, or worse if Princeton is "on" with their deep shooting.

This is another "must win" game. We need to be ready from the get-go. We need to be much better at the free throw line.
JWill and Derkack need to step up. And we need to close the backdoor. Mayb Martini comes out of his funk against his former team. LS needs to start perfecting a dunk. Dylan and Ace will show up as usual.
We always seem to struggle against Princeton, so we need to change that with a big win.
The Crowd should be worth 8-10 points.
Let's do it.

It’s being played in Newark. Will we have any crowd advantage?

We will absolutely have a crowd advantage. Last year, Princeton had barely anybody at CURE/Trenton, and Jerry Carino said in his pod today that he thinks Princeton might send about 1,000 fans.

So if there are 8,000 in the house, it will be like a home game.

The game will likely come down to 3 point shooting

If their 5 averages 2 boards and shoots 3's, then Ace can play some 5 and we can try to run them out of the gym

Ogbole seems destined to not play much as OP said. If there was ever a game for Martini to contribute it's this one

Martini 🍸 revenge game against former team after being benched with a DNP coach's decision is such a great narrative to root for

Would love to see him go off. Hopefully he doesn't follow Dercack vs his old squad and force too much.

Why would they send 1k fans when they didnt bring 200 fans 15 minutes away last time

There were like 150 Princeton fans in Trenton. There won't be more than that in Newark

Im skeptical that this game will draw solid numbers but ive been wrong before
I was actually thinking more in terms of noise and energy. I’m sure we’ll have many multiples of their fans. The RAC probably won us the PSU and SH games as much as Dylan and Ace did.

I was wondering the same, but I’m guessing perhaps with this NOT being the first game of the year (like it was last year), the school and alumni have made a better effort to encourage their fans to attend the game. I’m skeptical like you are.

I can see Martini getting decent minutes as he kind of knows how they play and the personnel. If he cannot make an impact this game I give up.
