Somerville dollars

I got one finger for him...
This is a BS thread and there was a time these types of claims wouldn't be allowed without some real sourcing.

What's the gap on 50k after taxes on that tax bracket? Plus commission to his agent..$25 to 30k?

So you honestly think Richie just flat out made up what was said on the podcast about 7 figures? Why?
Did Richie say anything about the offer of 400k and the demand of 450k before leaving.
As for the podcast didn't hear it but read this from you in this thread:
>There is no chance this is true. Richie released a podcast about how it went down. He would not completely make up a story as sometimes these details get out.

He asked for a million. We knew we couldn’t come close so that was it. It’s certainly possible that Washington ultimately settled on 900k though, but so what? They clearly have more money than us. He’s not even their projected starting center.<
So it seems you're saying Richie said Sommerville demanded 1Mil from Rutgers and settled for 900k
if Richie said that in his podcast will believe it's true and hope he has a more reliable source than the poster who claimed Pike offered 400k and Sommerville demanded 450k .
Either that's BS or Richie confirmed it
As for me not believing, if I don't know something and someone posts about it I'll take what's claimed with a grain of salt because misinformation is prevalent when you look at all of what's being posted on social media sites like this.
I go for what Richie said and hope he gave his source to those that heard his podcast.
But won't believe the 50k difference made Sommerville leave story without a reliable source confirming it.
I'll take your word on it if you say Richie said it was the 50k difference or you know for a fact that's why Sommerville left..

Richie said 7 figures.
Richie didn’t say anything about what Washington paid him. At least I didn’t hear that.

No Richie said Lathan marched into Pikes office and demanded 7 figures to stay at Rutgers. The day after we lost.

There is just a lot of shit in this thread - the 400 large seems more realistic. If the opposite is true than the nil game is going to run out of gas as it is not sustainable.

Osobor getting two mil smells as well. He's not that good.

Not really, Lathan is a 4 who can play the 5 vs small lineups or foul issues…

Their coach is going to use him properly.
If the rumors that Lathan pulled a power play and made sure that no other 5's were recruited, then he forced the coaches hands and he had to play the center spot. In retrospect, they should have told him to stick it and let him leave in the summer when he pulled this crap if they actually found a capable 5 at that point.

Only way he is worth seven figures if they are all ZEROS
I don’t mean to specifically point at you here because I think there are A LOT of fans here that likely share that opinion.

But come on, we all know the market for bigs is crazy. Hell the market in general is inflated.

With that in mind, the dude was most offensively skilled big that we’ve had here in a loooong time. I can’t think of one better in my time of being a fan. He led the team in free throw shooting..

Did he struggle defensively? Yes.
Did he force things at time? Yes.

This place is WAY too harsh on the freshman that get (significant) time here. The fact that more people shouted down at Lathan’s play vs JWil’s play is absolutely disgusting to me.

Scream and say this 18 year old sucks a bag of dicks but never scream at your 23(?) year old “leader” who looked lost on the court all year tripping over himself.

Crazy to me. Lathan is going to be a very solid player down the line if he is receptive to coaching. We don’t have the money for the kid because someone else is willing to pay for his level of talent.

WTF are you babbling about, scoring 8 points when 2 NBA players are the main focus of the defense & half of those 8 were from foul shots does not make him worth much in my view, because he was lazy on defense & gave up more points then he scored. Hope he enjoys his bag & being on the bench for a terrible team, I won’t miss him or JWll

Hate to swing this back to the RU Prez search but Murphy as possible next president of the U?????

Seriously?

You know - 5 years ago I would’ve agreed with some of what you are saying but being freshman doesn’t matter anymore the way it used to. Every year is a stand alone and kids need to be considered based on where they currently are not where they might be in 2-3 years.

I, for one, eagerly await yet another season where everyone’s opinions about everything are colored by completely made up and otherwise unreliable information about NIL numbers.

You know in five months “we lost Somerville over $50k” is going to be regarded as fact here by like 50% of the posters because this idiot made something up whole cloth and the only mod of this board is too busy acting as a link aggregator to trash AI articles to delete the thread.

Look - this is an anonymous forum. Any old Joe can come on here and post a comment that their friend knows Lathan’a agent or whatever and there is zero accountability.

In contrast, Richie is not only not anonymous but part of his livelihood (income) is based on the success of the TKR podcast which broadly depends on him being viewed as a credible source of information. Therefore, common sense dictates that when he makes a statement it’s highly unlikely that he simply made it up.

The mods really ought to put a stop to it.

Allowing anonymous and unaccountable posts like these to build support is basically an indirect way of allowing folks to post on here that Richie is a liar.

Totally agree with you, but that’s not Lathan’s fault, I mean he was going to do his frosh year somewhere. Maybe we need to stop bringing in 4 freshman each year like idiots.

Trashing an 18 year old big is the dumbest thing I’ve seen here.

The big man market is inflated because age/experience is very important in that role. We’re just the only idiots walking into the season with youth in that spot. It’s an issue that our staff created, in what world is any staff bringing in a highly rated freshman big without having the $ in year 2 to retain him?

For the most part, I don’t think it’s meant to be “trashing” him when some of us say he isn’t worth $1M to Rutgers. It’s not picking on him specifically - it’s just that as a sophomore, he’s not going to be able to help us enough to warrant spending in excess of 20% of our overall budget. That doesn’t mean by his senior year he won’t develop into a very good player, only that whether or not this happens is irrelevant to our decision for next season (which wouldn’t have been the case 5 years ago). We need to add a post player who has already proven he can defend at the BIG level because we flat out couldn’t stop anyone in the interior. And we need a shooting guard who is a 2 way player too. Those two things are going to be expensive and need to be prioritized.

How much are we paying Grant next season?

People we trashing Lathan all year during the season before any of this.

I get it they’re getting paid now, be critical, but holy hell do we look stupid expecting a frosh big to look like a seasoned vet.

But it’s a common thing here, people leave RU and it’s always “they suck,” and never “we suck” even though they’ll go on to win a natty or play in the NCAAs while we’re at home in the NIT losing to Hofstra.

Cam sucked. Cliff sucked. Mag sucked. Paul sucked. Etc etc etc.

It’s a good question. I hope not that much because the market for Grant’s current skill set isn’t that high. He has “potential”. That’s not what the market is valuing though. In terms of proven ability, Grant is an athletic 6-7 forward who showed flashes on D but he a long way to go to be considered above average. Poor shooter and ball handler for his position. Did not demonstrate ability to penetrate or create his own shot. Strengths are moving without the ball and finishing strong in the paint in transition, back door cuts, etc. I can’t imagine why he would be worth more than 300k to any high major team unless they simply have money to burn. To me, JMike should have more current market value than him because there are less guys out there capable of primary ball handling responsibilities at high major level.

I’ll bet you it’s a pretty penny, certainly more than 300k.

If he’s getting 300k then Pike has gotten a lot of value out of that spot. A B1G starter (that’s what he is to us) for 300k is insanely low.

He’s not a projected BIG starter anywhere else. Review my scouting report on him and challenge what I said. Where am I short changing his strengths and weaknesses?

He started because outside of Ace, look at the other options for the 3-4 spots. Tyson and J Mike backed up Dylan and J Will. Occasionally J Will would slide over to the 3 - say maybe 10-12 minutes a game? Ok - so then we had Ace filling max 30 minutes in the 3-4 spot and occasionally sliding to the 5. That leaves 40 minutes to allocate to someone else at the 3-4. Who did Grant actually beat out? PJ? Bryce? No - he got Martini’s minutes when Zach was in a rut - they shared the time. That doesn’t spell out perrenial BIG starter though.

I wonder what the UW fans are going to think of Rutgers when the two guys that directly transfer out there from RU were some of the biggest whiners in college basketball. Both acted like they never committed a foul and would bellyache after nearly every call. If Jeremiah Williams ends up there the fans will think we must coach the players to be whiney.

I tried to like Sommerville and his game. But in the end not going to miss him that much (it was the constant whining).

Lathan is only a 4 if you have a time machine

He can't guard the perimeter. He would get absolutely torched. Not sure he made one outside shot all season

4's need perimeter skills and athleticism in the year 2025 and he lacks both

Lathan is an undersized 5 at this level

Wow. I was actually thinking of him as a possibility.
of course you would be, that would be a horrible choice. He did a horrible job running NJ, increasing our budget from $37 Billion to $68 Billion. Everyone wonders why our property taxes are so high and why everyone leaves the state as soon as they retire.

Actually 100% of property taxes go to local and county budgets, not state.

Things are more expensive due to Covid inflation.
Our population was 9.5 Million last year, an increase over the 8 Million we had not so long ago.
He increased school funding, attracted more jobs, and provided tax relief. In the end, he got things done, and could get things done for Rutgers.

I think someone from a school like Michigan would be ideal. But someone like Murphy would have the tools to succeed.

Was there a final number Somerville was given? Is anything reliable out there?

What kind of bullshit is this where they grovel for money to pay for players but don't disclose how they are spending. Anybody that gives even $25 should be given detail who was given how much.

Should the Atheltic Department have the same requirement?
They grovel for a lot more money and spend it on all kinds of unknown stuff.
