An official announcement and reason why to be released soon .

I will say this much . . . I walked by The Alley on my way into the game and looked over and got a near anxiety attack just thinking about being in that mob. Looked crazy.

I would bet there was more than one case of alcohol poisoning that arrived at St. Peter's ER following the tailgate. And a parent threatened to sue for sticking a bunch of underage students together with a tacit agreement for the cops to play it cool.

I'd have to assume, being Rutgers, the Hobbs beer video had something to do with it.

Awesome video, but not the best look for an AD on gameday.
Why you think other AD'S around the country don't have a beer as they move amongst the tailgaters many of which include students...sorry it's time to lower the drinking age to 18 as it once was same as the legal voting age.

targum reporter just posted on twitter..'the decison was not made by the athletic department" hmmm...

They may, but knowing NJ and Rutgers, it's probably a bigger issue here.

I agree. Lower the age to 18

Even if the legal age was 18 binge drinking is a hot topic on campuses. So it probably wasn't the brightest idea for your AD to be chugging a beer in front of the students.

I disagree. When I was 18 the legal age in NJ was 21 and was 18 in NY. I made a few trips over the Outerbridge that very well could have ended in disaster on the return trip home. Let's keep the legal age at 21 to let these kids mature and are able to make better decisions. The laws are not to put the screws to these kids, they're there to keep them alive.

If the legal age was 18 you would not have had to make those near disaster return trips home. That is the whole point. Making the legal age 21 is not stopping people as you clearly point out. It however often makes young people make poor decisions to hide their drinking under fear of arrest. Would you rather a 18 year old drinking in the middle of the woods to not get arrested and then driving home or in the safety of someone home where if they had to much to drink they can just stay there.

This is exactly why I tried to tell people not to discuss it on the boards. If everyone low keyed it--including Hobbs-- all would probably have been fine. You can't have internet posts and social media with the AD implicitly supporting it. Unfortunately in this day and age, the legal ramifications are huge. Sad. My guess is legal and senior admin realized the liability risk and felt they had no choice. Totally sucks and probably could have kept it going but the internet, media, etc just had to have minute by minute updates. Really feel bad for the students. The state needs to make the age 18 again.
