The Alley Being Shut Down

there is still no excuse for students to not go to the game...drink in your dorms and on campus and come over...its done like that at alot of other Big 10 schools

Agree 100%. But it's not just the students.

If RU announced no tailgating was allowed, I'm sure a huge % of our fanbase wouldn't go to games either.

It's a fanbase thing.

And you just fvcking know the students will try to make themselves heard by literally not showing up at all to the Iowa game. Whatever diehards existed in that crew just got the middle finger from the legal team at RU they have essentially dared them to not show up, because they will likely boycott it just for shits and gigs. Not realizing all it does is exacerbate the problem. And round and round we go.

This is exactly why I tried to tell people not to discuss it on the boards. If everyone low keyed it--including Hobbs-- all would probably have been fine. You can't have internet posts and social media with the AD implicitly supporting it. Unfortunately in this day and age, the legal ramifications are huge. Sad. My guess is legal and senior admin realized the liability risk and felt they had no choice. Totally sucks and probably could have kept it going but the internet, media, etc just had to have minute by minute updates. Really feel bad for the students. The state needs to make the age 18 again.
Not sure if it would have been fine, but yes, the AD promoting it probably was the issue. Can we just make the Alley an official gameday parking lot, but the only ones eligible to purchase that pass are people who buy young alumni season tickets?

Too late now.

these kids don't know how good they have it, Iowa, one of the biggest names in college football, is coming to town, yet they want to skip the game because they cant get blackout drunk in the parking lot. Amateurs

I'm betting it offended somebody. You know, a student who feels threatened (especially since there was no trigger warning) by it's very existence.

If there was a "safe space" there, this wouldn't have happened.

why don't they just go party in the blue or yellow lots?

is it really that difficult

the students who care about college football and supporting their fellow athletes will be there...the amateurs and bandwagon students who are just concerned about getting shitfaced will not be there...and you know what...alot of them tailgate and then do not go to the game anyway. Kudos to our die hard students who WILL show on Saturday

That is not the way to build a fanbase. I go to a lot of SC games, so that is my other experience. There is next to no police presence and students of all ages are openly drinking everywhere. And this is on the campus where most people tailgate. They check id's for the parties, I think.

Point is, it's fun for them. That's why they go. It's more than just getting drunk in your doom. That sounds like an amateur move...by the administration.

As usual, RU gets it wrong. Morons lead the school. From the people in charge down to the legal advisers.

Yes it is that difficult. Students don't have priority points. student's don't have cars. students don't want to tailgate next to old guys like me and I don't want them either. Let them have the alley. it was such a good thing and RU goes small time and F's it up.....again.

Exactly. Our group used to make it over from Cook/College Ave for Ohio U, Army, and Buffalo when we were students. We now play a schedule I could've only dreamed of as a student. With a bit of gumption and some ingenuity, they can have their cake and eat it too.

I'm sure the Hobbs video didn't help but let's be real this would have gotten shut down at some point this season.

This was destined to not work considering the size of the student population, our soft administration, the pussification of America and the scummy lawyers who roam this country.

Attending a football game is much more than simply supporting your fellow student athletes. It has to be fun, and like it or not, drinking and tailgating is a huge part of a game day experience.

without tailgating, there is very little difference between being in the stadium & being at home in front of a 55 inch HDTV

I would argue sitting in front of your 55 inch HDTV is much better than in that scenario.

I'm tired of being right. I'm not posting the link so it doesn't spread, but a student on here just got a link to a change.org petition to boycott the games until the Alley is reinstated.

Fraternities and sororities are getting the news at 6pm

The students used to be in blue back to the '60s that I am aware of. Rightly or wrongly non-students got pissed that kids were out of hand so the students were segregated to the alley. I think if it were low key it might have been fine. Those students that go will be back in blue, I'm guessing.

they need to put these students behind Yurcak...there seems to be plenty of room on the side there..perhaps because the Alley was so confined to an area in the back it got shut down because the inability to get emergency vehicles and control the crowd...they need to work on the compromise and give out at least 50 blue lot passes to these students

I would hope one of the differences is being part of 40-50,000 fans. Or is your living room that crazy?

Plenty of seats just opened up in the new end zone
Hahaha. Some of you are clueless. None of the party kids go to the games. Same when they were in the Blue. They party. Wait until they are told they must move and than get in their cars and get the hell out of there.

Frankly, it was a completely idiotic idea to begin with. The school cannot designate an area for underage drinking. If they create it, they have to police it. Better to let this stuff just happen organically.

We are probably going to lose to Iowa, and the students are probably feeling slapped in the face so idk how I feel.

I don't get why people don't want students in the blue. I'm in the blue.

This is spot on. Unfortunately a school sponsored and designated area draws way more attention, way more students, and increases the liability to RU exponentially if something does happen.

They should really just do away with the student section all together. I would love to have seats over there. The students don't want to watch football games so why reserve a section to be three-quarters empty every game?

Couldn't be anymore wrong.

You honestly think none of the kids that were in the stands on Gameday attended the Alley pre game?

I graduated in 2011. Thousands of kids went to the lots before the game and then went into the stadium.
