The Alley Being Shut Down

Couldn't be anymore wrong.

You honestly think none of the kids that were in the stands on Gameday attended the Alley pre game?

I graduated in 2011. Thousands of kids went to the lots before the game and then went into the stadium.
I parked in the RV spot in the Blue Lot for 10 years. They'd come in. Party and drive out. Every game.

Yea the kids with the giant trucks and speaker systems didn't go into the games that doesn't mean that all the students who made their way from their dorms, apartments and houses to enjoy some beers in the lots didn't go to the game.

I drank in the blue lot for many a games and know tons of fellow students who did the same and then went into the game.

I'm tired of being right. I'm not posting the link so it doesn't spread, but a student on here just got a link to a change.org petition to boycott the games until the Alley is reinstated.

Good for them.

Other schools have areas just like this where all the students tailgate. Especially in the Big Ten. Those kids have great experiences because of this and give back to the school when they are gone because of the memories they had there. The kids we are screwing are potential future donors. I've seen and heard from many that The Alley was the most fun students have ever had at RU. Just another sign at why RU can't ever get it right.

Curious to see what other schools do. Here is a story from last week that limits tailgating for fraternities at University of South Carolina:

Members now have to register to tailgate. Registration must include a list of who will be at the tailgate. Those of legal drinking age cannot bring more than six beers for personal consumption. Plus there has to be one sober monitor for every 30 chapter members.

Pat Hobbs video now making the rounds in media...ugh.

Why do I have a feeling this is NOT going to end well...............

There is really nothing better than being in a stadium with the energy of the crowd. TV can not make up for that. That's why I bother going to the games is to be a part of the crowd. Watching on TV inevitably means channel surfing, people interrupting with bs, and it's always great to come back and be on campus, and grab a beer at the Harvest Moon after the game, unless it is full of partying visiting fans of course.

Shit if I were subject to that I'd go to maybe one game a year unless the FB team was ranked.

when I was walking in at 11:40 last week there were hoards(sp) of students walking from the alley to the gates....and the alley was still crammed. I was impressed. They need to just figure this thing out and Hobbs having a beer..BFD! (who cares..only at Rutgers)

Wasn't Kevin Bannon fired for something like this hahaha OMFG Rutgers as usual.

Not trying to be hostile but i dont think you have been paying attention the last 13 months

you'd be right lol. I have zero clue about the parking situation now. I always park on busch and walk over

the students who care about college football and supporting their fellow athletes will be there...the amateurs and bandwagon students who are just concerned about getting shitfaced will not be there...and you know what...alot of them tailgate and then do not go to the game anyway. Kudos to our die hard students who WILL show on Saturday

Even cooler story.

Tell us more about what the students, should, will and will not do from the insider perspective of a 50-year-old professional message boarder.

Maybe you should go back and read my original post. "The party kids" don't go into the game. The alley just intensified how big the party crowd was.
Students that drive in without 50 friends, set up a tailgate and enjoy a few beers go in like the rest of us. But the Alley was a stupid idea from the start. They should have known that from the disaster a few years back when they tried that by the golf course near the Scarlet and Green lots

So.......the school shut down the alley permanently, effectively denying any responsibility for a student sponsored tailgate.....the area is not scheduled to be used for anything else; would the school allot personnel to the area to deter any gatherings there? If people just showed up, would they be chased? ... not that I'm suggesting this should happen...

hey..as a make good maybe the students can party at the Harvest moon and then those guys can pay to have them bussed over until a solution is reached...[cheers]

On a personal note, I'd just like to say how saddened I am by this development. In the spirit of outreach and comradery, I will open my own tailgate to a limited number of students. No more than, say, six. Preferably female.

I'm with Spanky. I don't think this was a failure to clear an idea with Legal. I think what happened is that the Alley succeeded beyond Hobbs' wildest expectations, and it was felt to create a risk of harm. *That* would have gotten Legal involved. My guess is that Rutgers didn't want to take a chance on being sued by someone who got him or herself hurt in the Alley. I'm not a drinker and never have been -- not a moral thing, I just don't care for the taste of alcohol -- but I can certainly understand why students feel disappointed. Beer and sporting events go together.

Quoting this just so more people will see.

I read your post clear pal.

The "party kids" do go into games. Anybody who attends these tailgates is considered a "party kid".

You're wrong.

so the Athletic department comes up with an idea to get more students to the game and at same time calm the get off my lawn people, who dont want the students in the lots,it works well for two whole games, the RU PD police Chief said there were like two whole summons given out..but now its cancelled by someone not in the Athletic department..the students have started an on line PETITION not to attend the games now !
BRILLIANT RUTGERS

My daughter graduated class of 15 - due to no tailgate parties her senior year - most students stayed on college ave and partied unharassed. The students do go in the game when they are at the heights - witness the last two games this year.

If you think the 6000 kids that sit in the student section every game are coming in off the street stone cold sober, you may want to check that bus for gas leaks.

Theres very littlle doubt in my mind this decision was made cause Pat Hobbs had a sip of beer. Only at Rutgers.

Nah. It was a safety thing. The POlice love having the ability to drive through the middle of a tailgate "for safety's sake". This giant blob of humans that might not be respecting their "authoritay" got the POlice folks to shut it down. Hobbs has a great reason to have a beer when talking to the kids. If he didn't have the drink offered he would have had no credibility in a situation where he was trying to get them under control. That was his best chance at getting some credibility with them and get them to listen a bit more.
