Suggest every ship from now on include a workout at the RAC where the recruit shoots 100 FT’s. And in order to get the rude he must make at least 70%.

If he fails he gets two more attempts ... and if not successful we offer a PWO ...but no Ship for him.

Sorry Ethan Happ (47%), Zion Williamson (66%), RJ Barrett (68%), Brandon Clarke (66%), and Jordan Caroline (67%), we have no spot for you here.

We lost a game the other day that didn't require making another 3 or 15 footer; making a good pass; dribbling out of trouble or advancing the ball; rebounding, defense, dunking or basketball IQ: it required making FT's.

If we can't hit FT's when they count we're working against ourselves. Good teams make their FT's...and seal the deal. Bad teams make excuses and find statistical data to support why they could have won: but didn't.

MO
PS To mix a metaphor you're saying that Dave Kingman belongs in the HOF (i.e. lots of HRS, nothing else except for lots of K's).
PPS Since we have this problem every f'ing year, why not hire Rick Barry to show the team how uncool it is to shoot like he did from the free throw line...but how KOOL it is to actually WIN games and perhaps go to a post season event that isn't an alumni athletic sponsored dinner: here are some of the best FT shooters of all time
*Steve Nash
*Stephen Curry
*Rick Barry
*Larry Bird
*Chauncy Billups
*Calvin Murphy
*Kevin Durant
*Dirk Nowitzki
*Kyrie Irving
*Reggie Miller

And here are some other NBA Stars whose career FT% > 70%
*Bernard King
*Bob McAdoo
*Chris Paul
*Pete Maravich
*Walt Frazier
*Clyde Drexler
*Karl Malone
*Kobe Bryant
*Kareem Abdul Jabbar
*Hakeem Olajuwon

Don't have data to confirm these points.....
1. FT % improves from freshman year to senior (we are young)
2. FT% improves as minutes decline (we are playing too many minutes in spots)

Let’s have fun with this... to keep/get seats in the 100 section fans have to shoot 70% or better. At halftime of a game we can make you run a few laps around the RAC to simulate game conditions and have you shoot in front of everybody. For every miss each fan must pay $5 to the court club ( bet the RAC gets pretty loud). You move towards center court/courteside seats as your #’s improve. You also get to complain louder! The jackazz that sits behind me can yell bend your knees, follow your shot, through your nose, and aim for the back of the rim while you shoot (he must have been a winning 3rd grade rec coach).

PS - you work on your FTs at the end of practice when you’re gassed. Everyone can improve but it has to be a priority. And YES the coaches have to push it (I can’t imagine that they are not pushing this already).

PSS - the kid at the line wants to make that shot more than the disappointed fans (I guarantee it). The improvement has to be something he commits to ... I assume he wants to stay on the court and doesn’t want to be ridiculed by our “fans.” These things should be incentives to get better.

Some of you here know this story. While I was a manager of the basketball team for my 4 years in the late 70's, I was a good shooter, especially at foul shooting.

When Kelvin Troy(one year behind me) came to Rutgers, he was always a tremendous defensive player and a good scorer, but struggled with his foul shooting. Before or after practice, I would work with him on his foul shooting and the 2 of us would bet against one another shooting 10 free throws at a time before and after many practices. I took a bunch of Kelvin's money and he was always pissed that the fat manager could constantly beat him in foul shooting. This happened many times in his sophomore and junior years. As time went on, Kelvin became a decent then good foul shooter. He shot 58% his sophomore year and 68% his junior year. I would still beat him more than not, but he drastically improved as his career went on.

I graduated in 1980 and then Kelvin finished his senior year at 76% and 68% for his career.

He worked extremely hard to improve his foul shooting and I want to take a little credit for making him a much improved foul shooter(while taking his money.) :)

Best of Luck,
Groz

Michigan made the title game last year despite very bad FT shooting all season long ranking 326th nationally at 66% for the season.

Plenty of very good teams are not good at making FTs.

Thought this thread was going to be about the SAT chants at the Rac when Luthor Wright was at the free throw line.

A shining moment for the ru faithful. Mocking a young man with learning disabilities.

You can’t undo it but why would you recall it seemingly with fondness.

Sheesh, can't even have a fairly meaningless moment of brief levity from events that happened over 25 years ago on our own RU board without some frigid no sense of humor Seton Hall poster coming over here and getting all defensive and pointing fingers.

Of course it's typical of people like you to point fingers outward instead of worrying about the institutional problems at Seton Hall basketball under Carlisimo that totally used a player like Luthor, after all, he was just a Prop 48 Bobby Hurley cast off that the Seton Hall faithful nor staff had no personal care about as long as he was helped just enough to make him eligible to play.........a potential means to an end,,,,,,,,ignoring his personal issues for his entire college career, not getting him the help he desperately needed and leaving him woefully unprepared for the next step in life/NBA where his issues would come to a head quickly and he would implode. Get your own house in order before you point fingers.

The "hire Rick Barry to teach underhanded free throws" sounds like a GREAT idea but players just are not interested in switching to that style. There are NBA players shooting below 70 percent from the line who have a bonus clause, for good money, in their contracts if they make at least 70 percent for the season and don't switch.

It is a nice thought, but it is not going to happen.

Also, I do not think NCAA rules permit players on unofficial visits to participate in a workout while on the visit. The exception would be if Rutgers held an Elite Camp and part of the camp included a free throw session. Workouts are allowed on official visits though.

Russ I was just expressing my frustration … and thinking out loud.

I don't think anyone looks good with the underhanded (no pun intended) granny approach. But if the results yield an increase from our current FT % to say 75%... it might be a sacrifice that the player makes for the team!

HODGE CAN'T READ!
(I regret participating in that one.. as for everyone who used to drone "DOOOOOORK" just because a white guy touched the ball)

Your post mocking someone's learning disabilities sucked and your attempt to deflect was worse. And I'm a Rutgers fan.

I think you are on to something here but I would swap out free throws for standing. Fans in the 100 section must be on their feet cheering for 70% of the time or else......

I wasn't mocking disabilities. I was recounting. what actually happened at the RAC in the early 1990s. Now go find a life.

Interesting. Say goodbye to almost the entire roster. Playing with two, an interesting idea. I’m sure that the duo of Baker and McConnell would have RU up to 5 B1G wins and would be all the rage in college basketball.
