The Good:
1 Dylan. Not his best, but some good stuff. Changed the game when he is in.
2 JMike defense. He's had a whole lot of criticism but his D was solid, steal was great and his shot selection has improved.
3 Ace's two shots made down the stretch. Good stuff and like any scorer, forgetting the past. That quick three when a two and an open lane existed would have created quite the handwringing if that was a miss.
4 Big O. Just playing better the more time goes on. Think it's time to give him more minutes until extreme matchups.
Not so Good:
1 Falling in love with the end game 3. SHU one went in this one didn't. Considering a 3 was not needed, and his ability to finish, would prefer taking it to the hoop and scoring or drawing contact rather than the "picture" ready 3 that is desired.
2 Rebounding. Just wow how very few can or want to. Effort can make up a lot and there's time but the WANT TO has to change.
3 Weak side D. Yes freshman and new comers, but has to get so much better. Still so much AAU "going for a steal is playing D" type of play.
4 Lathan rebounding. I feel bad as was of the first to note his black hole type of play on o, and actually think that has improved...somewhat. But it's his box out and rebounding that is so needed.
5 Dercack bully ball. Worked on a lower level as he could out athletic people. Was ok in non conference but needs to stop. He has hops and burst and just needs to play within the flow of the game. The reduced minutes have made him anxious and he's too quick to duck his head and shoulder as soon as getting the ball.
6 No screens or plays for Hayes. Cant be just iso, Hayes is a good shooter. Need to get him 3-5 shots a game, off of good looks.
7 Wheres the Press? Need to speed up play and this group can be there for the press. Any free points would help.
Do we really have two top 3 players
Every game its the same announcing bit. RU has two of the top 3 players for next years NBA draft.... It's intimated that we have two of the top 3 college players. On that, the answer is no.
Harper may very well be a top 3 college player. Bona fide argument to make.
Ace was not even one of the top 3 players on the court in an RU-Ivy game. Does he have huge promise that could project well on the next level-absolutely.
But the repeated mantra that we have 2 excellent college players is not correct. We have one great college player. We have another streaky one who COULD be great.
We are playing with one excellent player, and expectations need to be aligned with that.
IF Ace could become an excellent college player, then everything changes. But right now we see what we see because we are a one man gang with some streaky help and some role players. That realistic view changes the expectation and disappointment factor. Ace learning to play D and rebound would change the season.
