Brilliant game plan to have Harper get others involved, especially in the first half.

Kept the defense honest and gave our roll players a boost — moving, alert, and focused — as Dylan was looking to reward them with the ball.

Other than Ace, our shooters have to be ready to knock down shots when Dylan (or JMike/JWill) finds them open.

Nice way to instill confidence in each individual and collectively as a team.

Yes he needs the ball in his hands more, period. This is the best change thus far.

The game plan was to have Dylan only shoot 3 times in the 1st half, while getting shots for less efficient shooters? That would be a weird game plan.

Players were open and he is a willing passer with good vision. He has a ton of success driving all the way to the rim against man defense. That's rarely an option against a 2-3 zone.

Dylan could have done whatever he wanted against zone or man. But an underated part of his brilliant ability is his unselfishness. He repeatedly gave up the ball to JMike for an open shot multiple times. He did it once in the Princeton game on a fast break , which I immediately hated , and JMike instead of converting had the ball blocked to the third row. Last night , he repeatedly was looking for whoever was open , hitting ACE a few times for the foul line jumpers , his 10th assist or alley oop dunk. He hit everyone and game flow and lead in the game dictated his play. Another underrated part of his game is his Basketball IQ. Elite and off the charts. Really looking forward to watching how he attacks the BiG 10 teams that will be coming for him with intense heat and likely double teams. Nothing better than seeing him slip the double teams and dunk on their carcasses.

When a team doesnt put any ball pressure and plays mostly zone YES.

That isnt what we are going to see the next 18 games
Regardless of the type of defense we face in the next 18 games, it doesn’t negate the importance of Dylan being a facilitator by looking to involve other guys, while also being our first or second leading scorer.

If he can consistently get 5 or more assists in B1G play while scoring at a high rate himself, that will be great.

Last year Boo Buie averaged 19 points himself, and 5 assists per game, but he had 12 B1G games with 6 or more assists, including 10 assists in a win over MSU and 9 assists in a win over Purdue. Were they playing zone?

I see Dylan having that type of impact for us, as both a scorer and facilitator.

You made my point. It was a good strategy against their zone. He had 12 assists, which means the guys he passed to were making their shots at a decent rate.

Dylan has a special ability to not just get into the paint but get all the way to the rim when he drives. It eliminates the need to pass in those situations. He's basically too good.

Dylan is a high IQ player. The first half unfolded the way it did because of him, not because of some staff's plan. He took what was available and didn't force the action for himself.

And as a result others didn’t force thing’s either. Ace was hot, yet still moved the ball quickly. We got many open looks from sharing the ball.

Sharing the ball can be contagious — hope we see more of it. Dylan and Ace can give it up and still get it back for scores.

I may be wrong….i can see him in the traditional PG role 1/2 possessions tops whenhe is the game. Asking a freshman to facilitate an offense under pressure, playing defense and be asked to score 23+ PPG is a LOT!

Of the 5 players in the non center rotation 4 out of 5 of them are point guards…..although not in love with Derkack in that role

I gave you a like for this post, mainly due to the part about you being wrong 🙂

I think we want him in a traditional PG role often, makes Ace the focal point for a bit instead of him just standing around watching Dylan dribble. Also gets everyone involved a bit more.

I am telling you the scouting report on Dylan is going to be to absolutely hound him when he has the ball in his hands. We do not want Dylan wasting energy bringing the ball up against heavy pressure. That needs to be JWill.

Rest of the way we have B1G games with coaching staffs having at least 3 days to prepare for every game. It is going to be very interesting what teams do and how much they are going to use JaMike's defender helping out on Dylan.
