The Official Chris Ash Guide to New Jersey

I've lived in Jersey for about 45 years and I still haven't mastered the art of the interruption. When most of my extended family is gathered, I probably talk much less than everyone else.

I interrupt people all the time in Columbus......they hate it.

Rent a nice summer house in a bucolic shore town. Your family will appreciate it when you're putting in those long hours. Besides you don't have that available to you in Wisconsin, Arkansas or Ohio. So take advantage of it.

The local news will not have live coverage of the Michigan team plan landing the day before the big game (true story). We have MANY more newsworthy events in these parts.

We are at the center of the universe, literally. Virtually every major industry, from finance to journalism to advertising to entertainment, is in our back yard.

just don't say hoagie. And avoid Tastees despite what people say.
Troglodyte! Totally bad advice. lol

I had a double-roast beef and provolone sub a couple weeks ago that was very good. Not the best. But very good. In fact, now that I think about it, that's what I'm doing for lunch tomorrow.

In New Jersey we don't pump our own gas

Pork Roll, Taylor Ham, whatever you call it, when we see you eating one we know you are one of us now.

We call a whole Pizza a pie.

In New Jersey we say Seriously not Serious. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

We hate it when people call it "Joisey."

When asking where someone lives, "What exit" is so passe.

If you want a taste of the South for a moment, go to the Pineys. It is south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

People working in NYC getting rich (or loaded already) live in Jersey. Except or some plain vanilla people who chose Connecticutt (no sense of adventure).

There is corn in NJ to eat. Wonderful white sweet corn. The other yellow stuff is for feeding cows.

When the fans boo, it's for you and not the qb or any other player.

I you ever say we want to be the 1 - 0 this week, be prepared for hostile messages.

Find a great local deli and pizzeria. Eating wawa, 7 eleven, mcdees, and subway are garbage.

Good luck and get us winning.

Love that map w/regional population labels. Pretty much Alabama. LOL

A sloppy joe here isn't what you're used to in the midwest, and they're a whole lot better here.
Fresh seafood consists of more than catfish.

... Oh yeah and we hate PSU even more than the folks at tOSU hate PSU

But if you ask PSU fans, they will say there is absolutely not a single time in their lives that they ever considered Rutgers as their rival. BTW, they have no rival and, also, joining the Big Ten ruined their lives.

The Hillsborough deli is not a place to get a sandwich for lunch, it's a voyeuristic haven for guys to observe real cougars in their natural habitat wearing yoga pants.

Presumably there are several 'cultural' differences between New Jersey and Ottumwa, Iowa. Having married an Iowa girl and lived in the Midwest, I can hopefully help shed some light on little things that may ease the transition to Central Jersey.

...

6. The Italian food and pizza is much, much, much better in New Jersey.

7. If you are craving a bit more solitude and farmland, you better head to the western and northwestern parts of the state. It is actually quite pretty out there.

8. The northeast is incredibly small vs. the midwest. My Iowa in-laws think nothing of 5 hours in the car. From the Hale Center, a 5 hour drive will get you to Boston, Philly, New York, Baltimore, and Washington DC.

Others...feel free to add.

Live in PA.

A classic thread. Although I have lived in Burlington, Middlesex and Morris Counties and worked in Passaic, Union, Somerset and Monmouth counties over the last 45 years and don't think I ever anyone call a sub/hoagie a hero.

1. When with a group of people, do not be surprised or upset when there are multiple conversations going on at once. I was shocked at my first Iowa Thanksgiving when my wife's family actually listened to each other before speaking. Likewise, her head was spinning at her first New Jersey Thanksgiving when there were multiple conversations going on at once.

2. In New Jersey, it is not rude to interrupt someone. Chalk it up to enthusiasm and a need to be heard.

3. If driving and in a situation where two lanes merge into one, feel free to drive in whichever lane allows you to move closest to the merge point. People will let you in if you show some aggressiveness. I've seen far too often in the midwest that everyone forms one single line that backs up and is actually slower than an effective merge.

4. If you are heading to the beach, you are 'Going Down The Shore'. If you go into NYC, you are 'Going into the City'.

5. People aren't necessarily more or less nice, but they are more likely to tell you how they feel. If you are not liked, you will know it, and if you are liked, you will also know it. Much less is said behind your back...it is all said to your face.

You do not tell people that you are from "New Jersey". You are from "Jersey" and it is not "Joisey"!

1. Go directly to Bound Brook for the best pizza anywhere -- Stan's Chitch's Cafe on Columbus Place. Order a sausage cheese combo and start out with a sausage and pepper sandwich with cheese and onions.

2. Bagels must be bought at Wonder Bagels in Jersey City.

3. When pronounced in the correct Jersey accent, nothing rhymes with "dog."

There is less traffic in the truck lanes of the NJ Turnpike if you're man enough to drive there.

If you find yourself driving in Manhattan, never, EVER use your blinker. A full on race by every vehicle in your immediate area will ensue to block you from where you want to go ... just for the fun it. In fact, I actually saw a new yorker drag a person out of their car for doing this just because they did not know this rule.
