THE OFFICIAL RUTGERS-COLUMBIA PREDICTION THREAD

Get ready to hear the name Geronimo Rubio-De La Rosa. 6-2 guard who scores 19.6 ppg and can shoot the lights out — 53.7% FG overall, 46.4% FG 3-pt. (39-84), and 91% FTs (50-55). We always seem to let one guy on opposing teams go off, and if that happens, it’s probably going to be Geronimo.

He has a supporting cast too, with a couple other guys who can score and a couple guys who have some size and can bang.

One thing they DON’T have is rim protection. As a team, they only average 2 blocks per game. So our strategy needs to include getting down hill and attacking the rim. Yes, even if they play zone — best to attack a zone from the inside out anyway. Get down hill and take the close shot if it’s there, and kick out if it’s not.

Columbia hasn’t played much of a schedule, but they did beat Villanova on the road. So this will probably be another close game.

De La Rosa being their best player, I’d have JWill in his face from mid-court forward, even if he doesn’t have the ball.
He should never feel un-pressured.

He should never feel un-pressured except when we turn it over.
I'd guess it will be Davis on Geronimo to start, Williams on Noland )their 2nd 25 mpg+ guy), and Harper on Brown - their 3rd 25 + mpg guy (less of a 3-point shooter than the other 2) ... Bailey on the 6'8" Thompson - who takes some 3's ... Ogbole on their center, Eddine Bedri.

Columbia appears to play 3 guys at center: 6'10" Eddine Bedri (18 mpg), 6'9" Ritter (12 mpg) and 6'9" Tavroff (9 mpg) ... 39 mpg amongst those 3 ... and only Eddine Bedri takes any 3's at all: 13 on the season. Potentially a better Center match-up for RU f bigs than vs Princeton, for whatever that is worth.

I would guess Martini will play - because for whatever it is worth, we have seen that Derkack cannot defend against players his height or taller who have a post-up game - meaning he will not be able to cover Thompson when Bailey is out ... and unless suddenly Grant is trusted, RU has no other player who can fill that role besides Martini.

I hope Martini doesn’t see the floor

Geronimo is going to have a 30 point game with the amount of possessions Columbia will have.

RU 82 Columbia 80
RU up 82-62 late in the 2nd half, but misses 10 straight free throws and Columbia makes 6 straight 3 pointers - two just inside halfcourt, two off an RU double team, and two bankers.

Some pretty bad takes here for sure. If you think Columbia is going to blow out Rutgers at home put down the crack pipe.

That said a couple of good players they have, Geronimo and their big guy. They run nice stuff and play zone, which USUALLY gives RU fits. But I have faith in our shooters, they will have good games.

Could be close, but Rutgers 80 Lions 70

My prediction: Can Rutgers win this game? STH Grifters lost huge

Columbia is 11-1. This Rutgers team struggles against everyone. I’ll take Columbia +11.5

I’ve read every single post, exactly ONE calls for anything close to a Columbia blow out win

Maybe the supporting cast will actually show up and hold up their end of their NIL basket….

If Columbia is really an 11.5 point underdog that is the bet of the year. No way we take them by that much. They have a great shooter and a strong rebounder. We have shown no ability to offset those types of players. It will be very close, 50/50 if we win.

I am thinking RU is the bet.....

Look at December schedule

12-4 lost badly at Albany
12-7 beat Merchannt Marine
12-9 beat Sara (as in Sarah Lawerence)
12-28 beat Fairfield at home #311

They have played 1 decent team all year and that was almost 2 months ago. I expect the RAC to be libraryish, but if we bring any intensity this game shouldn't be close.

I think there are 7 rotation spots (out of 9) up for grabs. I think the Princeton game will be an inflection point. I think guys like Derkack and JWill are going to have to fight for minutes

Anybody looking for a reason to not be able to watch the game? Or at least the beginning? It’s torture watching these “should win” games knowing if we’re losing, I’ll be dying inside the entire time. Because if we lose, we’re all but eliminated from the tourney.

Never felt this way in my life. But watching these team is just too stressful to be fun at this point…
