The truth about Geo Baker no one wants to hear

Well, we do know that we are the only B1G school to offer him.

That means nothing to me.

I am very realistic in that we aren't a desired location (YET!, wait for PHASE 3) for HS junior and seniors. Right now we shouldn't expect to see most of our recruits to be highly sought after by the top 2/3 of our conference.

Guys like Geo Baker is how we are going to build the program. We need a lot of them and we can't afford a ton of misses.

But it does matter in response to the question of whether he would start for other B1G teams. It's not necessarily determinative, but it's relevant.

Our winning, unless we catch lightning in a bottle, will be based on guys who don't fit the B1G or ACC mold. Need guys that can shoot and are willing defenders. We don't have any "B1G starters" on this roster, but it doesn't mean we can't win a few games.

Mental, mental, mental. I’ll keep saying it: our athletic is in DESPERATE need of hiring a sports psychologist.

Maybe we have a conditioning issue.

Three things to which you and NUTS say

1.) with this team... other than Eugene ....we do have a conditioning issue. However, unlike the past, this one I attribute to youth. I suspect that this truly goes Away as the program grows up

2.) nuts is on to something I keep harping on...it is much harder for 13 guys to learn how to win together ...than a program always has 8 to 10 player out of 12 that experienced winning ball...that is part mental

3.) nuts is on to something, part 2. Theee is a lot of pressure to someone to “be the guy” to take Rutgers badk to the ncaa tournament. A LOT. Billet and Hodgeson. Sanders. Herve. And others. It was the same for football and trying to get to a bowl the first time. Ask Erney and Lucas. There is a lot of mental pressure to get over the hump...and for a geo baker to be the face of the program to be that guy. In reality, I don’t think that’s how it’s gojng to happen. It will take a team of good players growing up together to do it. Sure,
Someone has to be captain, but it will because we have talent all around and not a superstar...as we just don’t recruit the superstar to do ther

But you are going to go through a lot of lumps to get there the first time. And menta toughness and development matters.
Like the hall getting there the first time I see PJ. UConn the first time.

I really think we have ...on the roster...right now the core group to get us back to the ncaa in 3 years. Maybe 2. But we got to grow up and develop first ...and a big part of that is mental toughness needed to learn how to win

Remember how bad he looked last year when he slumped? #mental

..But again, don’t get me wrong, in my humbllist of opinions this is a department-wide issue. It’s not one team, it’s not one player, it’s not one coach, it’s the entire athletic department.

I think it is mostly because we need them to play over their head on a regular basis. How would Geo look if he were the 6-7th guy on a top 15ish team? How about EO if he played with a guy like Ward from MSU? Occasionally they will have a great game and we expect it to be the norm. Excluding those 2 and the perhaps the 3 bigs, I don't think anyone else would see the floor on a top 25ish team.

Some of you guys are way too critical. Probably most never played a major sport at a high level. Geo is asked to do so much this year. He is asked to be a point guard, our scorer & leader. He should be a two guard and he is the guy that every BIG team keys on to stop. He has a lot of pressure on him and you guys are not helping matters. We need fans who support our team and not ones who tear our players down. I saw what he did last year and firmly believe he will do well next year as a shooting guard with Mulcahy and Young running the point.
