The truth about Geo Baker no one wants to hear

OP’s conclusion is absurd. Geo proved last year as a freshman that he’s a Big 10 starter. Call it sophomore slump, playing out of position, whatever, it doesn’t take away from the fact that he proved himself last year. Having said that, we won’t win another game if he continues to shoot 10% from the field.

What league as a major state university should rutgers be in? This is exactly where rutgers belongs. It’s a question of being competent.

nothing on the field or in the administration has warranted the invite....a school with very little history and very little support from the administration does not deserve anything. Those at the top do not care, never have

I agree but where do you place us. To me it’s not the institution it’s a failure of the individuals.

I think AAC based on ability and level is best...however I think the ACC was more appropriate than the Big 10...I feel that fit wise thats where we belong for geography, former rivals and then ability to compete....footballs path is doable...look at Pitt in the championship game of the ACC....wouldnt you want that at RU?

the failure of those in charge has held this school back for over 40 years now right from Fred declining the Big East invitation which torpedoed mens hoops

His shooting numbers were horrible last year

Geo was Douby sick in that Purdue game last year, showed signs of it at times last year also and some this year. He is only a sophomore...thats the thing we have to remember..thats a baby really. We have people here ready to have McConnell start over him..think about that for minute

I was 11-12 from 3 one game intramurals at Cook . It isn't about how you play in your best or worst games.

I love the kid. But talent wise, he’s not a big Ten starter. A great guy off the bench, maybe. But there is a reason he was ranked where he was.

There, I said it.

But many on here made him seem like the second coming of Michael Jordan when he signed! Lol

He's only a sophomore. He really could have used 1 more year of Sanders. If he was in Kisses spot, he'd be playing better.

That's the problem at RU. We consistently need guys to play 1 or 2 spots above of where they are capable of playing.

Who is he stealing shots from? All I see are misses from everyone else. After seeing how bad we've been from the perimeter, maybe we should throw into the block 20 times a game. Could it be any worse?

Wait but we got an incoming freshman guard next year that is supposed to help......lol

Please stop. Kid is a baller. Had an awful game and he needs complimentary help offensively. He's not an Alpha and hence did well with Corey and Freeman last year. Once he has complimentary parts (hopefully next year) and he doesn't need to bring the ball up every possession, you'll be tooting a different tune.

This is not really difficult to figure out. Baker is being asked to carry the load as a lead guard because other current options are limited. He is not a lead guard and this plus his MPG is taking it's toll in terms of both attention from the other team's D as well as fatigue factor.

Lots of oversimplification going on here.

It’s not that geo isn’t starter worthy or isn’t a PG, it’s that when there’s no supporting cast to regularly beat teams, he’s being completely keyed in on. Watch Maryland’s defense once Eugene got into foul trouble yesterday...when Geo used a ball screen 5 Maryland defenders (all with length, mind you) scrunched into the paint so that he didn’t have any good looks at the basket or at teammates. When McConnell ran the point earlier, they let him get to his spots because they weren’t too scared of him beating them; they’d rather haunt Geo coming around screens.

I’d like to see a little more inside out play where Geo and the post player (ideally Eugene) are isolated on one side of the floor with everyone else spacing out. This could get Geo some easy looks or drives attacking close outs against recovering double teams.

To be clear, I do want McConnell to start, but I want this to happen for one game only. Not an ongoing thing.

OP premise is flat out wrong. Simply watch tape of last years BIG tourney to see what type of talent he is and what he’s capable of. And no, lighting it up at MSG against Purdue etc is not like having a good pick up game at Busch. All that’s been said above is correct. He’s not a natural PG, Pike has put way too much on him this year, he needs a supporting cast.

The one thing about geo is that his legs being into his shot are a big difference when he is on or off.

His legs are Not into his shot right now. He isn’t getting the consistent same hop or elevation which is effecting his release and his percentage

I swear he looks like he lost weight (again) since the start of the season ...but that’s by the eye ball test ...he just doesn’t look as strong or quick as day one in November

I noticed the same thing. He came into the season stronger. Was getting up way higher on his dunks than last year.

Looks like a skinny freshman again. Some guys have a tough time putting on weight.

If he's a baby, then he and RU were lit up Saturday by several players who were in utero.

. . . this plus his MPG . . . .

RU played 5 games in 1 month. That's it. One game every Saturday. The "tired" and "lost his legs" talk on here is make believe. Either that, or the kid's just got a conditioning issue (which I don't believe).

Whether we do or do not belong is irrelevant. We are there. Now to start acting the part. The day will come. It may come under a different university administration, but it will come.

He's a sophomore on a team with no other shooters. He is a legitimate Big Ten talent and will be a good starter for us next year when the guards are much better.

I like Geo a lot. He is and will be very valuable to the program. The bottom line is he needs to knock down a much higher percentage of his shots. Until he does that I can't see how he can positively compare to other B1G starting guards. The fanbase significantly overrates him as a basketball player. To me he is a player that is a good 3rd guard getting 20 MPG that has value not making mistakes and being at his best as a 3rd or 4th scoring option. I think he is being asked to do more than he is capable.

What does Geo do compared to B1G guards that is above average?

I think he needs to have much better shot selection.

Geo would be having a good year if Corey were here. The problem is people think Young will give you what Corey gave towards the end of last season and boy it won’t even be close.

stop pining for Corey, he left, he didnt want to be here. Move on. If Corey was here, Montez wouldnt be developing like he is right now

Yes he would. People who believe young guys can’t develop when there is a senior PG on the roster are borderline psycho

My feeling is he can't really be compared to other Big Ten guards until he has more of a Big Ten supporting cast. He is a sophomore and is playing out of position. There aren't many guards in the Big Ten that could succeed on RU the way they are constituted right now. I think you will be surprised how good a shooter Geo will/can be once Young and Mulcahy can spread and distribute the ball a bit. I also expect Mathis to make a major leap next year in his ability to attack the basket with more consistency.
