My sister's kids just got admitted and she said she's a little leery about the fact that there's no dining hall on College Ave

No, I said. There's good old Brower.

Nope, she said. It's permanently closed and has not yet been replaced.

What kind of clown shoes university doesn't have a dining hall on its main campus? Do college ave students have to take the bus to eat????

Can’t they swipe their meal card for a meal at the establishments in the student center?

Some might say you can’t eat commons food every day, at least that’s what they said when I was in school.

"THE ATRIUM IS A TAKE- OUT ONLY OPERATION - ONE MEAL SWIPE PROVIDES YOU WITH ONE ENTREE WITH ITS MODIFIERS AND SIDES, ONE BEVERAGE, AND ONE RETAIL SIDE ITEM."

You have to admit that's an absolute crap deal compared to a proper dining hall like Livingston Commons.

There are dozens of tables in the atrium and I understand a pretty good variety of food along with specialty nights, etc. It is not all you can eat like the dining halls, but that is the only reason I think I would’ve preferred the dining halls. I think the university is working pretty hard to even things out. What is better about the atrium for a lot of students, and would’ve been better for me, is that you can use your three meals anytime of the day – – I would’ve always skipped breakfast and had something late at night pretty much always and put Greasy Tony’s out of business.

And there was always inequity. When I was in school, the hierarchy was that Bush was the best, Douglas was the second best, Cook the third, the commons the fourth and Livingston dead last.

Just so typical Rutgers to do this. I absolutely agree that the dining hall is an integral experience in college especially for the younger classes.

When I was in school, the pecking order was Cooper Dining Hall (Douglas), Neilson (Cook), Davidson (Busch), Brower and Tillett (Livingston). My freshman year in the Towers on Livingston the saying was "Kill it at Tillett", and on the stall walls was written: "Flush twice, Tillett's a long way"

So the only difference in our orders is that you had Busch down two slots.

Yup. Although I've heard the new dining hall in Busch connected to the student center is supposed to be top notch. Davidson Dining Hall was okay at best.

Don't most (all?) freshmen live on Livingston now?

It says take out only so I'm wondering. Clearly not enough tables for everyone to eat there. Do kids just take it back to their dorms?

Not sure but Honors College at least still lives on college ave.

My son just got admitted to RU. I also am very hesitant of no dining hall on College Ave. He is a very healthy eater and I just can't see him eating at the Atrium every day. I little scoop of protein on top of a Mediterranean bowl or a wrap for dinner is not going to cut it. No grilled chicken-type station, no salad bar, etc - like he eats now at home. We went in person to see last week. Atrium would be Ok for a week. And what about the weekends when you are not on other campuses for lunch. He would have to live on Livingston, which I know is better now that when I was there is 97-98, but it still seems more fun to live on college ave. Trade offs everywhere at RU

We visited JMU yesterday and going to Delaware next week. JMU was amazing (and a grilled chicken station, lol) but a little far. Delaware might be the middle ground, but will be 20k more per year. I just see many "every day living" cons at RU and the dining hall is a big sticking point for me.

Does he have the option to dorm on another campus? Does it have to be College Ave?

He can pick his 1st choice to be Livingston, but he seems to like the action of college ave. Although he is a huge RU bball fan, so would be fun to live on Livingston.

Here is another thing - I can't believe the workout gyms have not been updated since 1998. College Ave gym still in that crowded basement with 4 treadmills. Livingston gym also tiny. JMU's Rec center was AMAZING... 40+ treadmills, tons of workout equipment, brand new basketball courts, swimming pool that was hang out area. I was amazed. It looks like a bigger, newer Lifetime Fitness. If you live in VA, it is no brainer to go there.

I know Sonny Werblin is much nicer and more modern (we have to go back to see), but he won't have any classes on Busch, so wouldn't make sense for him to live there. I would not want to make a 30 minute trek to Busch to eat or workout.

RU is his slight 1A top choice of DE 1B and JMU 1C, but from a parent's perspective, I would feel more comfortable sending him to Delaware over RU, even it means another 20k per year. (walkable campus, better dining, better rec center, although not the B10 sports scene that he likes) ughhhhh - almost wish he got into only 1 of those 3 schools.

Don't most freshmen live on Livingston? Also isn't RU's much better ranking and academics much more important?
