Two Rutgers head football coaches were born on the exact same day September 8, 1875:
William Van Bergen “Double Dutch” or “Billy” VanDyck
Coached: Part of 1897 and all of 1899
Born: September 8, 1875 Died: March 13, 1981
Michael Francis “Mike” Daly
Coached: first game of 1900 season
Born: September 8, 1875 Died: February 6, 1944
Van Dyck attended the Rutgers-Syracuse game on November 29, 1975 and walked up to the press box. When he died, he had outlived all other Rutgers head coaches except the current coach at the time, Frank Burns, and his two immediate predecessors John Bateman and John Steigman. Van Dyck was the Rutgers team captain in 1894.
Mike Daly was around for pre-season training and the first game of the 1900 season when Rutgers defeated CCNY 5-0. However, a contract dispute erupted and he gave way to George Hendrickson the rest of the way. Hendrickson went 3-4-0. Daly was a former half back at a small Indiana college by the name of Notre Dame. Daly is the only undefeated coach in Rutgers history -- 1-0-0.
