...John Chaney's Temple teams from the late 80's and early 90's. While they didn't usually have the super star offensive players, you just knew every night they were going to out-tough you and steal your lunch money. (And I say that lovingly...)

How about Virginia?

One thing I am keeping my eye on.......

The last 3 years we had multiple stretches where the defense and overall intensity declined. Id be surprised if we were able to go through the entire season without another stretch like this. The key is to bank wins now and get a few games over the bubble so we can withstand a stretch of underperformance.

I don’t know Greene, I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a stretch where we are a bit more tired than usual but this team just seems to be a different level of locked in on that end.

So far absolutely. The only pedestrian defensive game we have had so far (statisticily) was Temple. Obviously no Paul or Caleb AND it was 72 points in 73 possessions to a Temple team that is rated 107th offensively.

'20 and '21 were very good defensive teams. '22 not so much.

'22 had 13 out of 32 games over 1.00 PPP adjusted defensive efficiency.
'23 is batting 1.000
'21 8 out of 28
'20 8 out of 31

While there isn’t an exact team we reminde me off …this is The three that we do

Virginia teams under Bennett the last couple of years defensively

Pitt teams under howland for toughness

The butler teams with Matt Howard under Brad Stevenson for playing each possesion like it’s a war ….

Very Familiar With Virginia, Kehei Clark was the point Guard on my sons 8th grade team that won a Las Vegas Big foot championship.
Was a great defender back then as well, I watch them very closely

I think SoCal Dave hits it on the head. Arkansas Nolan Richardson ‘s pressing teams is the closest I see us. Our press is what makes us an elite top 3 defense. We get steals , deflections , trap when we have the guards cornered , and that leads to run outs and fast break points and dunks. This team has spurtability just like those teams turning a 5 point game into a 15-20 point game in less than 4-5 minutes. They had the big kid in the middle , Oliver I think , we have Cliff. They had length and we must have the most length in the country . We also have elite defenders that jump passing lanes like Caleb, Cam , and even Paul. We have the 1 man press in Mag that gives opposing guards nightmares. 40 minutes of “Hell” was their slogan I think. Holding every opponent to their lowest point total of the year is truly elite.

Don’t forget Mag. I think his emergence puts us over the top defensively.

Mulcahy is so important for us and is such a unicorn it's hard to find any team that we resemble. In fact, I'm still trying to find any player I've seen that plays like him.

Ehhhh...they ALWAYS had multiple great shooters on each of those teams.

Yes I see some similarity to Pitt under Howland and Calhoun's Uconn teams which of course makes a lot of sense considering the coaching staff. Those teams accomplished a lot though- we are TBD.

The Pitt Howland and Dixon teams are a good comparison. Usually didn’t have much nba talent but just grinded out wins with toughness and determination

If I remember right no top 100 recruits on the entire team when they first won the Big East...
