Thug Ball

This guy is a big fan as we see him again...

Generally speaking, refs are there to make corrections to thuggery wherever it exists, and in many cases where it doesn't. This wasn't a back-alley brawl, this was a televised, refereed contest. NJ has a reputation that lives rent free in other folks' mind that is then transferred retroactively to the basketball court in a game they thought they should have won comfortably. I only wish Tony Soprano were still here to confirm this.

Said this many times on here but if you get @RutgersRaRa a little hot under the collar (which I am detecting a bit), it’s you.

That’s usually my measuring stick to see if a fan base has gone a little too far.

Well they are the "corn hole" of America you know.
They must have just Loved CVS as their women's coach huh.

Lol. You mean Coach Vivian Stringer, the most beloved Women in Iowa women basketball history? You ask CVS about Iowa and she will speak incredibly fond of her time and would have never left if not for the untimely death of her husband. She regularly would get standing ovation as the Rutgers coach at CarverHawkeye Arena.

The "cornhole"(Iowa) of America has the only DIV1 football stadium named after an African American in the whole country (Jack Trice Stadium for Iowa State)

University of Iowa broke the color barrier for it's athletic programs in 1895(hint: 3 years before Rutgers first black athlete was born) and if you look at the University as a whole, historically is a whole lists of firsts for Minority and Women's rights to an education.

We call your style of play Thugish. Call it physical if you want and it's the same way of play as Wisconsin and MSU have gotten away with for years. Maybe it's effective, but it goes against many of the hand check rules that went into effect by the NCAA 2-3 years ago.

Outside of this incredibly ignorant comment, shitty people reside in many places and areas of the country. Don't generalize. Your team is up in coming and as some of you are probably 76ers fans. Trust the process. Pickell got you headed in the right direction

When I was in my early 20s (in the late 80s), I worked with a guy who attended Iowa. I asked him, "What was the most common thing you heard from opposing fans to try to get under your skin?"

He replied Iowa haters liked to yell... You know what Iowa stands for?

I assume you are referring to your use of that term.

Good post. I wasn't really being serious in mine.

Challenged

Handicapped is not a PC term anymore
oh boy. now they need to change the parking spots, plates, and placards. (in all seriousness I get it. Told my wife the other day she'll never see one of those on our cars. I'll crawl first).

This is what a lot of Iowa fans are calling the way we play in multiple message boards . Didn’t know playing physical in your face d means you are a thug . I guess they are used to watching their own team play d under Fran and giving up 80 plus consistently . I am now rooting against their team for the remainder of season . Honestly think them and Michigan have the most arrogant fan base based on message boards . Illinois fans were giving us lots of compliments for a great game . Iowa fans not so much
Shell21, your just trying to stir up stuff, where on the Iowa boards did anyone say Rutgers played Thug ball, they played very physical much like MSU but I never saw any thing that said Thug ball? There are crappy Iowa fans just like there are for any school so getting spun up off one comment from an idiot should not be the meter for the whole fan base. I believe most are knowledgeable and know that it was a lucky shot to win it. Rutgers has a great Young team and its only going to get better. Nobody wants to play your team especially at the RAC. Root for whoever you like, but i promise you, most Iowa fans are good folks who simply care about their team and its success as much as Rutger fans so please stop trying to stir up stuff. Much of what you said happened didn't. Good luck the rest of the way!

Haha No worries

If anyone has any reservations of that term usage, Iowa refers to Wisconsin Badgers as thugs, goons, brutes all the time and that team has been very white. It's because they constantly hack. I don't know how they get away with it. Izzo and Bo always got preferential treatment on how their players could play. Brad Davison for UW is probably the dirtiest player in the league. Stop in on a game thread with them over on Hawkeyereport.

Iowans are very defensive about Iowa. We constantly get stereotyped into dumb hick farmers when it's not true. I've heard every flyover joke in the book. It doesn't help that ABC will show the threshers on any national televised game during harvest. Why they can't show how Iowa City is one of a handful UNESCO World Cities of Literature or Tuesday vibrant college nightlife has troubled me.

State of Iowa was actually named the #1 state to line in the 2018 metric seated rankings put out by US News and World Reports. It just doesn't fit the national narrative unfortunately

We have a very physical team and I love it
I could see the term thuggish used with us
We are an in your face team with a tough “hands on” style of defense
No need to bring racism into this
Don’t think being called a thug is an exclusive term for any particular race.
As a matter of fact , the fact that you thought of any particular race when the term “thug” was used tells me you think In racial terms
I try not to think that way

If you check the thread about Rutgers seeks revenge on the hawkeyenation board it’s on the second page . Also pretty sure I saw the term a few times on your rivals board as well but not going to go through all the threads again . I am not trying to stir it up just relaying what a few posters said about our team .

Only this I disagree with is "thuggish" as we simply DO NOT - for the overwhelmingly most part - play "dirty" and that's what most of the world associates "thug ball" with (regardless of color...that's just stupid lol...) IMHO.

I checked.. The first reference of Thug ball came from an RUreadyforsomefootball guy sayin.." As a fan of the "thugs", as a couple of your racists fans describe Rutgers players, I'm just going to say, after attending the game, Iowa made picking my Tournament bracket a little easier. Already have you guys as a one and done in March, thank you very much!!! PS. Yes I know how long it's been since we made the Dance." I never saw any other. You come back to your board and try to make it sound like you were accosted on the Iowa board to Fire up the RU faithful and thats not true. Enjoy your team.. They are very good. And will only get better.

Thanks for the thoughts, e5! I wasn’t bothered by anything really, just addressing the notion that we would ever get away with being thugs. If anything, we get hammered for ticky tack fouls more than we are allowed to hammer folks. Our fan base can be soft when other fan bases say stuff about us. You and I know from tMB how not to get too upset, since there is so much trash-talking over there. :)

Thug tag was attached to the RU women by quite a few folks some years ago (and I’m not talking the Imus incident). Seems to have gone away of late.

Is this a reincarnation of Guidos vs Hillbillies?

Guidos vs Cornholers?
Or Guidos vs Combines?
I hope not.

I hold Iowa and their fans in a much higher regard than those from WVU. I don’t miss them or that thread at all.

If not unique to Iowa fans, they're at least an extreme example: Win a game that's both luck and heart-break, come here and act like dicks, then come back later and say, aw, I'm sorry for being suck an asshole.

Iowa (and a lot of the big ten fan bases, sadly) are full of racists. It’s totally normal in the predominantly white farming Midwest. Iowa and Purdue are the biggest public offenders I’ve seen (Twitter, message boards), but Wisconsin, Minnesota, and sadly even Nebraska have their fair share of racists. It’s unbelievable but believable, and a reason why I don’t root for any other Big Ten schools and cherish our victories
However, some fan bases almost seem reverse-racist against whites playing D1 hoops. I could care less if someone is purple, green, yellow, black, or white as long as they can help my team win games, play smart, go to class, and display character both on & off the court.

I may go on their board and ask if moving screens are thug ball . However I’ve already been called a cry baby and my grammar has been called into question while typing paragraphs on an iPhone
omg.. the moving screens.. and we get called for running into a moving screen. just crazy.

will agree with others on the thug ball BS...

Rutgers has a strange rep.. a lot of people think we're an urban commuter school for some reason.. and some people think we're a private school like an Ivy.. few have any idea the sheer size and research done here... but throwing out the "thug" label vs teams with a vast majority of black players...

yes, smacks of racism when your team plays like out guys... very little thug-like posing going on and the last altercation I saw was a double technical when a NW player got in Peter Kiss's face as he came up the court on the wing... we took some hard fouls in that game and no one on Rutgers jumped up and got in anyone's face.

Come to think of it.. it was several games ago when I last saw Rutgers player react aggressively.. and it was this guy (who was pulled away by a black player). Thugs? I think not.

That's BS... there is nothing thugish about it. You are a nut.

RU is not at all grabby on defense as teams go, so I don't think this vaguely racist term will stick

Then again, I love over-physicality on defense so if we were grabby, I'd welcome it

You may choose to view it that way, but that’s not the way society at large views it.

I dunno.

If you run around wearing a bunch of Thug Life shirts and embracing that culture maybe, just maybe, don't be mad when people start calling you a thug if you start to burn down your city (Baltimore) and loot the place or do other ignorant things.

I blame Tupac.

Well.. lets then take the black community's own words for identifying those who act like thugs.. what do you call them? Gangstas? Doesn't matter, whatever it is it would be called "racist" if whites use it.
