Thursday's NCAA tournament first round games discussion thread

I don't think Maryland fans agree with your comment. It was a nail biter type game where both teams had chances to put the game away.

I have no idea what "deserves to win" means except for atrocious calls or horrible luck (neither of which Belmont fell victim to). It's not like they outplayed Maryland. But heck, they almost did win.

So enjoyable watching Big East teams get waxed. Rutgers would have given Murray State a better game than this Marquette garbage. C’mon St Mary’s. Beat the Nova.

Man, bad looks for the Big East. This game is an embarrassment for Marquette. 5 seed? The committee has some explaining to do.
They were a tough team to seed. They dominated their out-of-conference schedule and cruised through the first three quarters of the BE before the bottom just fell out. They will finish having lost something like six of their last seven.

But all they had to do was hit 2 of 3 ft for OT

Yeah but that's not something a driving guard is thinking about there. Chance for a layup..85%? Chance for a winning 3?...38%. Chance the guy gets fouled on that 3? 5%?

Making all three foul shots? 50 50? Making 2 of three? After missing first and making second with a slight delay there? Lol.. I have no idea. You would think he'd make 2 but I would have air balled it myself.

St John’s came down the stretch with the bottom falling out for them too. They were 9-13 in their final 22 games.

Which is why I dislike the fact that they seem to have taken all if this eyeball, trend, etc stuff out of this process.
Too much metrics in this process. Nobody can get these models right.

Ja Morant with a triple double.

Sheesh. I had not even heard of this kid.

The hell with Zion. I’d take Ja with the first pick. Kid is electric, skilled and savvy. Look what he is doing with mediocre talent around him. Marquette can’t defend for hell. Will be must see tv when Murray State plays Florida State Saturday

What a mismatch, nice job Big East.
As I said multiple times, the BE sucks this year. Nova is the only team that deserved to make it into the tournament. Marquette was a garbage team down the stretch in an awful conference.

I want the tourney to move to the world cup method. Nobody is that good to pick the exact seeding of top 8 teams, etc.

So put them in groups. Then pull the seedlings like a lottery. Here's the top 8, now let's pull the seedlings via a ping pong ball, then do it again and again for each group of 8. Want to add some fun, drama, and excitement? That would do it. And be just as good. Travel? Sorry, go where you're draw puts you.

seems like the entire Big East came crashing down at the end except for Nova and SHU

Marquette as a 5 was a joke..it wasnt very hard...how on earth could they be seeded better than Villanova...was the committee even watching at the end? I see schools like Iowa State and Cincy who had solid season who won their conference tourneys seeded worse than Marquette..thats a joke.

I kept wondering why the pollsters kept them so high in the rankings...a little BE bias there for a conference that was mediocre at best.

St Johns was pathetic last night. I think Nova wins pretty solidly vs St Marys tonight, I think Wofford has a very good chance to take down SHU

NIT results proving that as well. Gtwon losing to Harvard, Butler out, Providence out, only Xavier left

I wouldn’t be surprised if st Mary’s gives nova a game. They have knocked them out of the tournament before.
Imagine it being Thursday night and no big east teams left . History!

I think they took Marquette’s season as a whole, which as a whole, was better than Cincinnati or ISU. But they way they crashed should have given the committee more pause.

Not sure what to expect from the SetonHall - Wofford game. If we get out and guard them, and don’t look ahead to UK, I expect to own, but it’ll be close. Villanova should be fine.

I never read too much into NIT flops. Teams that don’t want to be there will always play like it. In the case of those two schools, it’s tough to transition from 20,000 screaming fans at MSG to 3,000 in your con-campus fieldhouse.

I know Xavier didn't make it to the Dance, but they're the only team down the stretch of the season from the Big East that had that chip on their shoulder. If they didn't blow that lead to Nova, I believe they would've won their 1st BE tournament title.

That roster and players would not have allowed Morant to wipe the floors with them. Marquette and St John's essentially shut it down when they got behind. People can criticize the Big East like I have done for a long time, and I do think the league has some serious challenges ahead of them.

But these programs can recruit tougher and grittier players. SHU and Nova play with passion and determination and a chippy attitude that pushes them through spots. The Big East appears to have lost that edge from yesteryear. I can't see Jay Wright having a roster lay down like Marquette and St John's did.

The Big East has to have Seton Hall handle Wofford tonight, to avoid completing embarrassing themselves. A loss there and it's going to be an offseason of what ifs and why the UNC Greensboro's of the world next year, can't get a crack at March Madness.

Nevada looks bad, I think they played poorly down the stretch. Not the same as last year. will need big time adjustments and quite frankly they just have to start making shots.

I guess they renovated that arena . It used to be a dump and the surrounding area is a dump.

Anyone hear that idiot announcer (Debbie something ) at the end of the Villanova half ? Villanova has the ball with 30 seconds left and 21 on the shot clock. And she says they can go 2 for 1 and the moron play by play guy agrees with her! Now, I am not good at math but even I know that was mathematically impossible .

was just going to post that...this is in Hartford...its embarrassingly low...wow
And tix could be had for 75. Almost went. Sad. Can they find a way to,play some round every year bear NYC, jersey, Phila? We'll be there!
