Right now 197 and Heavy are a black hole. With nearly a month before the next dual, and 3 weeks before Midlands, is it too early to think about burning Mulligan's RS and letting Correnti chow down to get back to Heavy?

Certainly a question to discuss on a message board. But I am going with Correnti the rest of the way. I'm not pulling Mulligans RS at all this year.

My Correnti plan would be wrestle out the year and start the bulking up. Redshirt next year and come back to lineup Nov 2018. Will have 20 months once this season ends.

Mulligan will wrestle at Midlands. Can't wait to see him against some good guys. If he does well might be a hard dec for coaches.

Duals are not worth his future. Wrestle unattached and keep the RS
Is that why we burned Paetzall's RS? You DO know we can use a RS in other years besides as a freshman correct? Michigan is RSing 4 upperclass wrestlers this year. Why can't we? Put the best lineup out there.

usually not the best idea to pull the shirt of 2 true freshmen in the same weight class. whether it's correnti or mulligan or messner or whoever, 197 is going to be a weak weight class this year.

You don't always put your "best" lineup out there. Coaches look long term, not just this year. Just because Mulligan beat Correnti in a close match at ESU, does not mean he would be a big upgrade. The coaches must feel he needs a redshirt year to become a solid 197lber. If you use Mulligan this year, who goes 197 next year? Would you rather have Mulligan go 500 at best this season or have him be a better wrestler next season(when he has an entire year to bulk up and gain experience). I think Mulligan will be solid, but let's face it, he has not beaten anyone yet that would lead you to believe he is ready.

I would be against pulling Mulligan's redshirt, and for the record I was not a fan of pulling Paetzell's redshirt. IMO a coach should really only pull a redshirt for a true frosh if he is certain he could be an AA that first year. Both of these guys have shown great potential, but neither is quite at that level yet. It's still early though so I have my fingers crossed on Paetzell.

I think you have to consider the body type. Some guys will maximize potential by redshirting when they are a little bit older. For the heavier weights, I like the early redshirt, because it is impossible for them to build college level muscle coming in. Unless they are really elite they will struggle. For the lighter guys, sometimes its better to let them go and have them redshirt after a year or 2.

A fair point for sure. And it's different when a frosh starts the season right from the get go rather than pulling a redshirt a few weeks or more into the season. In Paetzell's case, it would have made more sense to me if McCabe was injured or something. It just seems weird to me to kind of upend a senior with a true frosh when a redshirt is available. But I'll defer to WNG's expertise and positive outlook on this one.

Shake-I am not an "insider" but what it tells me is that the coaches feel Paetzell is a better option for the rest of the season. 125lbers are tuff because even kids who you think will be career 125 sometimes move up to 133(not saying this is the case here). RU also has the kid from Ohio, Mackall who is pretty talented. Maybe the plan is to have him go 125 next season and Paetzell redshirt.

Right now Sean has not been there performance-wise or mentally. He did not make weight at ESU Open so sometime this grind gets to you. Partzel was the best option so the coaches made the decision to pull his shirt. He pounded the kid from MD who beat Agaisse from Princeton.

Everyone should already know this by seeing what's transpired this season.
