BB Recruiting ***Transfer Jacob Young has committed to Rutgers***

He is a scorer? Where?

Averaged 13.3 ppg starting in the last six games for Texas, including a 29-point outburst in one game.

Just because he didn’t start much his first two years, doesn’t mean he’s not a scorer.

Can’t judge him off 6 games. Who knows, maybe he was recruited for a safety net/ backup role. I know the staff knows what they want from him. Still, he is not your typical Pikiell recruit.

If he's going to follow his relatives into the league, which is clearly what he wants with his pedigree and statements, then he needs to learn to be a point and distribute. This staff has a ton of PG experience. I'm sure that's what the staff sold him on, and they wouldn't have made the pitch if they didn't think it was possible.

There's no denying that the physical talents are there. I tend to think you need to have the natural inclination to be a distributor, which McConnell and Geo actually seem to have, but the plan appears to be to have multiple combo guys on the floor at a time. If you can't get a true 1, that seems like a good plan.

I really don't think we have any idea of what this team is going to look like going forward. We may have seen an offense run through a ball dominating scoring PG out of necessity ... in the future I think we'll understand more what the intended design is.

Cmon, Greg. After 27 years, we’re not allowed to be a little cynical?. You can’t blame us if we need to see it to believe it, can you?

27 years of what...??

Being in the B1G.....???... Nope...

Building a world class practice facility....Nope, didnt have that either...

Having an actual revenue stream....?? No, that hasn't been in place either....

Next was "UConn is going to take our coach....".....Nope, never got off the ground...

Next is was "we've lost a 3* recruit to Wisconsin"......instead we got a significantly better player in McConnell....

Next was Brandon Knight is leaving for Pitt...???....Nope, didnt happen either....

"OMG we didnt get Tarin Smith to visit and we lost a grad transfer to UConn, Hurley is going to be a problem".....Nope, we go get a player that can perform for at least 1 season in 2019...and has, in spots, played in big games all throughout the Big 12....

So....if you have piles of evidence in the last 1...2....6....9....12....18 months....i tend to look at what is happening....NOW.....not when the Mets were last dominating the NL East battling my Cardinals.....27 Years ago....??? We were in trouble 27 days ago according to some fans because Souf and Bullock "were stuck on the roster"....Nope.....

It's been a bad winter, i get it....but its 65-68 degrees and super bright today....take a deep breath and enjoy the build....

Based on his commitment article, I think that was the message...the 3 former D1 PGs on the staff will help develop his PG skill and get him ready for a shot at the next level. We shall see.

The future makeup of the frontcourt in 2019 is an issue. We are slated to only have Duke, Johnson and Carter.....with Carter being a senior and maybe even a PF. I think one of the 2019 spots has to go to another Big unless we wait until 2020 to bring in a few.

Edit: I see youre really just talking about the 5 spot...

Eugene will still be here, and clearly plays PF on this team, even if he's undersized. He and Carter will be Seniors... some people have speculated on Harper becoming a stretch 4, but I definitely see him as mire of a wing. If Thiam can put on 20 lbs he could be an option. Definitely became a better rebounder this year.

I could see us having some really different types of lineups out on the floor in 2 years. Going to be a very different type of team than we've seen in Pikes first two years

I don't believe in pedigree. With the grad transfer rule, I generally don't like taking guys who are going to sit one for 2 years of eligibility. I don't usually like guys who are fleeing a situation where they weren't succeeding over guys who are pursuing a higher level. Throw all that away. I'm excited to see J. Young playing in scarlet. He has a top end that makes it all worthwhile.

There's a tweet from a Fox Sportswriter in Houston, that indicated other suitors for Young were Marquette, Cincinnati, South Carolina, Auburn and Nevada, for those concerned that "there was no interest".
Thanks for your "voice of reason" posts. This is a good pickup. He has some changes to make in his game, but he has talent. If he isn't good enough to play, then we'll be fine. We are building a good roster here that he can fit in well. If he is good enough to play, he'll add a great dimension to the team. Not all of these pickups are going to work, but it looks like a good move. Our success as a team is not dependent on Young's successful transition though

At the 2015 adidas Summer Championships Young led the event in scoring at 29.6 points per game. When he's dialed in he can fill it up. He's just a volume shooter.

Btw, Young only had three offers because one day after he got his third offer, Texas, he committed.
Is the 6'2" accurate?

Exactly we don't NEED him. If he lives up to the 4 star ranking great but have to figure he is at minimum a serviceable backup with more minutes going to Baker and McConnell at the point

At first blush, Young's 2-yr stats are disappointing. But looking closer at his performance in 2018 conference games against ranked teams, he shot very well including14 points v. Kansas. I can see why Pike grabbed him.

Right now, Young is an undersized SG who likes putting up the ball, mostly from range. The staff really needs to work on adding more PG skills to his toolbox for him to really be able to contribute, and for him to have a shot at the NBA.

His current skill set has him fighting for minutes at the 2 only - without the distribution skills to play the 1, or the size to play the 3. He can add the former, so I'd imagine the focus in his RS year would be on adding to his PG skillset to allow him to be more of a combo guard or scoring point.

RUChoppin, I watched some of his HS videos and he played PG in HS. I think he may have more PG skills than people think. At Texas they had other PGs so for him to play he had to play off the ball more. Coming out of HS he had more PG skills than Geo did. Remember Geo did not play PG in HS. Young and McConnell both at least played PG in HS.

But I still would like to see a grad transfer PG for this year. And still want Mulchay for 2019.

If he buys in and plays Defense i love this pick up.

Good teams were in the mix as noted previously. Good on PIke.

I saw someone mention, "a shame" about Mulcahy, did something happen with his recruiting i missed?

I also hope we land Hyatt/Massoud. Plenty of fish in the sea PG wise.

For those of us old enough to remember, Young reminds me of Tom Brown, who Tom Young plucked from Miami Dade Junior College , who became more of a pass first point guard than scorer. They both played or will play at 6’2”. If Young can develop the point guard skills, his handle and passing to go along with his passing we will be fine. He can also continue to work on his shot from three that will help.
We still need a point guard and I want Mulcahy bad, as a true point guard , but it also appears Coach is fine with recruiting guys that are shooting guards but can also play the point, like Geo, McConnell and Young. It also appears the game is changing where point forwards or shooting guards who have a good handle can bring the ball up and also get us in our sets. Coach is evolving with the game.

Well, he certainly didn't play much (any?) PG at Texas his first two years - so, he's not bringing that collegiate experience with him. If he's been playing out of position for two years, that might be why he was looking to jump somewhere else - but it also means he's missed two years of valuable reps handling the ball.

Coming out of HS, most of the news articles talked about him as a PG... not sure why he wasn't used in that capacity at Texas.

I didn't follow Texas closely, but think they had a PG ahead of him. But I too am surprised he didn't get run at the point in college.

On paper this doesn't add up and fit what I thought Pikiell was trying to do with the roster. Basketball games are not won and lost on paper so i am going to trust Pikiell on this one.

Maybe reading between the lines a little here...I like the fact that the staff could be realistic regarding Mulcahy and not waiting or hoping he comes here and then not ending up getting Mulcahy OR a piece they like (Young).

I think my question with Young is whether Smart had him playing out of position. If he was being asked/coached to play SG and be an outside threat off the bench, instead of playing PG (as he apparently did in HS), then it's possible that his production is not telling the whole story.

Might putting Young at the point be a more natural fit for him (he was rated highly as a PG coming out of HS)?

It's also very possible the staff sees him as the starting 2 guard

I'll choose to look at this as the team appears to have become better on paper by the 2 for 2 trade (Caleb/Young vs Mensah/Bullock)...even with Young sitting out. Young may be instant offense, and bird in the hand worth 2...

I'm not judging him off of six games, but six games in the Big 12 is enough of a sample size to at least demonstrate that the kid can score and has a scorer's mentality. We only had two players on our entire roster who scored 29 or more points in a game -- Sanders and Baker.

That said, as many have said in this thread, the kid will have a full year of mentoring from our coaching staff to make him more of a PG or combo guard. The kid clearly has talent, which is more than we can say for the players who departed early after this past season...

I remember Tom Brown well and played in some pick-up games with him after his RU career was over. Loved his game but Young seems more of a scorer than Brown. I’d be thrilled if he was similar to him.

It is hard for me to see why people are upset or even questioning this decision for the scholarship addition. Think about it for a minute:

1. There is no need to put all your eggs in one basket with Mulcahy. At the same time this does not eliminate them from recruiting him and accepting his offer tomorrow if he wanted to jump on board. Young will be here 2 years that coincide with Paul's first two, that still leaves 2 future years where he could run the show.
2. You need more than one true PG on your roster. We all saw what happened when Corey & Geo got tired, depth is key.
3. He is replacing essentially Bullock on your roster, tell me again how this is not an upgrade?
4. Grab talent where you can. In basketball we know there is always attrition, you hate to have that view point but that is reality. You can never bank on anybody being here all 4 years for a variety of reasons.
5. Front court is still in good shape, Eugene, Shaq, Myles and Duke all have multiple years left. Concept of positionless basketball is the way the game is going. We went smaller many times this year and still got good defense & rebounding, height isn't everything.

The six games could be just a streak or could be him coming into his own & developing as his shooting got better from freshman to soph year. Bottom line is he is adding talent to a roster that needs it & at the worst is a rotational player which we know we had some scholarships used up by players who previously were avoided in that rotation.

Kid played his whole life at PG and some people are acting like a couple years at SG and he is starting from scratch trying to learn how to play PG again. He was playing SG not hockey. He was still dribbling passing shooting it's really just more of a mindset change to run point. He would be fine without sitting a year and will obviously be used to point by the time he can actually step on the court

He hasn't yet played PG against high major defenses, either - so it's both a mindset change and a big step up in the quality of the on-ball defense that you see as the primary ball handler/distributor.

Looking back at his HS tape, he definitely seemed to be more of a primary ball handler than he did in college, and given the love shown to him by the rating agencies at that position (and a year with our staff to get acclimated to our system), I think he'll be fine.
