BB Recruiting ***Transfer Jacob Young has committed to Rutgers***

Ahhh Mitchell!

Mike Kuhn forgot about Mike Kuhn

The only reason I even remember him, is because I asked my uncle "Who is Kuhn" and he goes, "You can't say that, its racist" he didn't realize the guy in front of us had the name Kuhn on his jersey.

I'm not sure why you are apologizing to me but I accept your apology lol.

Yes.
Whats your opinion on him? Whats texting with my co-worker whos a texas alum who said, “prepare to be frustrated. The kid can score but really does nothing else. Hates playing defense, doesnt move unless he has the ball and has an attitude. Thought he’d go to a smaller conference”

Let's hope our program has as much of an impact on him as he has on it.

Not sure how I feel about him, but I hope the coaching staff can get him straightened out in regards to PG vs SG mentality. We definitely have the sit out year to try.
He's a Basketball player 1st

So is Mucahy off our radar now? Clearly impacts his potential playing time if he were to come. Mulcahy may have misplayed his hand unless Villanova is truly interested and he can land there.

I don't know how a 2019 prospect can misplay his hand in April 2018. It is not like Mulcahy cut his list to just Rutgers and Villanova.

He has plenty of time in his recruitment and several programs that want him. If he's now off of Rutgers radar Mulcahy will be fine.

Ok, now I have no idea what you are talking about. I did not say any of that.

What I did say can be found by clicking the link below:

Sounds like we got a talented player that has a few things to work on. He has a year to work on them and like a lot of transfers he comes in more mature and does the work.

If he can learn to play the point it would be good for him and RU.

Rutgers just went to see him so can't believe they will stop recruiting him.

Let's hope it's our turn to get a transfer that gets us to the tourney. How many teams have we "helped" for the last 25 years.?

Of course, but that has nothing to do with my point. @CrazyfoRU 'seemed' concerned about Mulcahy's fate so I was addressing that.
Agreed. Lot of folks wringing their hands about what this mean with Mulcahy. We have too long a history of waiting on a certain recruit who goes south on us. Like this approach better. Take talent when you can

In looking at this player, the staff must have identified skills they needed. They probably saw. 1) a good enough shot that when repeated could produce positive results(no bad form). Not exactly a Pikiell recruit as he seems to want things. I think he’ll mainly be used for depth. I think this staff is willing to take a chance and if the player doesn’t fit, they can leave. They have a lot of pieces that could play different spots. To me, nothing about this recruit warrants a year sitting him. Too risky and flip floppy as a player.

We need scorers on this team. We’ve all been frustrated by having a roster filled with supporting cast type players who can slash, play defense, rebound, and are “good guys”.

It’s refreshing to land a 4-Star talent who has a scorers mentality. He will buy in to the Pike way of doing things — defense, rebounding etc — but it’s nice to have a kid whose “base” is scoring.

He is a scorer? Where?

my view at this time.... we have recruited the hell out of Mulcahy, home visits, and he has been to RU enough.... he has been receptive to the visits and always reports that he has enjoyed our attention.

at this point coach might be sensing that, despite all our efforts, he just won't commit, and is looking for those bigger offers....

while we can hope he decides RU, I think coach is moving on a bit....

if he were to decide late he wants to come here, would be a bit of a problem, if we land a few of these other 4 star players we are in pursuit of.

I am sure that part of coaches pitch, is that we stress defense, and defense keeps us in games..... the player cannot show up here and figure that applies to everybody, but him

Don't like this one at all, and it makes me think we are striking out in other places. I like Pike but it's not like he hasn't made a guard recruiting mistake before. Russ's analysis looks spot on to me. Kid stands around a lot and doesn't even bring the ball up court. True PG's are born not made. Selfish, small, difficult to handle - not sure I get it.

Mulcahy is still on our radar. He is a great true point guard ,which we desperately need. Young , Geo, and McConell, are hybrids that can play the point or a 2 guard who can shoot and score but can also bring the ball up at times. Coach is recruiting interchangeable players that can play multiple positions , the 1 ,2, and 3 or others like Mathis that can play the 2 or 3 when he plays 3 guards. His bigs he would like to play 4 or the 5 and stretch the floor if possible. His wings , Eugene, Issa, Harper and hopefully Hyatt or Massoud can play the 3 or 4. Right now the overall talent level has been significantly upgraded from prior rosters. Coach’s biggest and toughest job will be to pick and match the best as fast as possible to get us back to the dance.

Any concerns about anyone not playing defense is laughable. If you do not play defense, you do not play , period for Coach and his staff. Young will learn almost immediately.

Looking forward to see what McConnell can do as he gains experience. The guy looks so smooth and in control, I think he could be an effective PG as an upperclassman

Kid's not a four star talent just because Rivals says so. Personally, I don't think he's even close. Plus four star kids don't have three offers.

Pikiell is bringing in talent and the additional of Young balances out the roster by class. It made sense to bring in a true freshman, sophomore (sit 1, play 2) and a grad transfer. Now RU needs a grad transfer (preferably a point guard). We how have good class balance and upgraded talent. The reality is there isn’t a ton of options and what we added is an upgrade over what we lost (minus Corey). Hopefully a grad transfer can give RU the final touch Pikiell needs for the 2018-19 season.

At the 2015 adidas Summer Championships Young led the event in scoring at 29.6 points per game. When he's dialed in he can fill it up. He's just a volume shooter.

Btw, Young only had three offers because one day after he got his third offer, Texas, he committed.

Yeah but the point is to keep the best players in NJ. The goal, if possible, is to make recruits want to stay in NJ. Look if we can get other guys from other states, great but make it easy and keep guys local
We have years of data and evidence that focusing on top NJ talent as a recruiting paradigm does not work. That ship has sailed. Get talented players, period, who want to play at Rutgers and in the Big Ten. Stop chasing rainbows.

I don't see how Mulcahy fits in Rutgers with the surplus of guards that will be on the squad in 2019-20.

Soooo....let me get this straight, so I completely understand the mindset of the RU fan.

A) the bigger school, gets involved and it's bad news for RU.....don't all of these "bigger schools" have intense competition for minutes OR in some cases, they recruit multiple players at the same position in the same class.....RU has recruited a combo guard for 2018 in McConnell that can play PG and a combo guard that was a 2016 recruit that is only here for a max of 2 years on the court.....Mulcahy, if he picks RU or any program would be here for 4 years.

B) If Mulcahy picks RU and is the best of the guards, he will play....same for Young, same for Mathis, same for McConnell.....Now RU isn't handcuffed saying, you can also play early if you earn your minutes....which is what every other school will present to him.

C) Or should RU show a complete irrational thought and ignore recruiting other talented kids....?? Young is a scoring threat, that can play minutes in the back court....does he defend....does he rebound.....we'll find out, but my guess is, the team culture and a 2nd chance, usually means more focus.

The other double standard is "well he only averaged 6PPG.....".....so a player that isn't playing 28-30 minutes a game and is playing 16-18 minutes, averages 6PPG....that's not bad....if he played more, he'd score more.....does that mean he would do other things well??

Peter Kiss averaged much more than Young, by playing more minutes and shooting more.....then the argument was "well, it's in the MAAC, he's not a B1G caliber player".....he shoots 28% from 3, he's a volume shooter".....same "facts" on stats, but in the last 12 months, all the reports are he will help RU and not have as much pressure on Mathis to walk in and do everything....

When we landed Peter Kiss, it was "insurance" against the knee deep battle for Montez Mathis.....the staff didn't sit on their hands, saying "nope, we are all in on Mathis, we aren't recruiting any other players".....the same message last spring was "well, we must not be getting Mathis, Kansas is going to offer or Xavier, Virginia Tech or UConn will get him".......well, we saw how that ended.

Young has NO impact on Mulcahy, but it's prudent to cover yourselves and add talent.....I know there is a population of fans thinking everything is woe is me.....it's really not....this is a safe, pickup, from another Power Conference and a much more likely player to be able to contribute.....

Just asking, so it was OK to recruit Peter Kiss from the MAAC as a transfer, citing his game vs Seton Hall and Gonzaga, but when Young's shooting percentages are about the same and he has 6 3's against Texas Tech, and we throw that out as if it didn't happen???

When I look at this guy play he sort of reminds me of a better version of Devon Campbell who played for us with one year under Jordan I think. Will be interesting to see if he becomes more of a team player and buys in or keeps the attitude he brings with him.

Cmon, Greg. After 27 years, we’re not allowed to be a little cynical?. You can’t blame us if we need to see it to believe it, can you?

It sounded to me like he was being used as a scoring spark off the bench at Texas. Maybe that was his role so he was in that mindset and more prone to jack up shots than if he was to be the PG running the team and that's what he's looking for. If Pike didn't think Young would buy into the team philosphy and play D and instead be a problem I don't think he would have pushed hard for him. You don't want a roster full of these type of guys but taking a shot on one is worth it in our situation. If it really doesn't work out he could always leave as a grad transfer and free up the sholly a year early
