Truth: (Article)We wanted to be NYC's football team,Right?

+ Some of the people on this board are insane and jackasses. We are very lucky to be in the B1G. In fact the ONLY reasons we were invited into the B1G is because we are the largest school closest to the NY/NJ media markets. % If our price to pay is to have ONE game per year for football in Yankee Stadium I am all for it. First, It gives RU something no one else can deliver which is the NYC skyline and eyeballs. It is our unique marketing advantage. Most people in NYC and NJ don't even pay attention anymore to the whole NY/NJ divide. The NY Giants and NY Jets both play in NJ. Rutgers has a great opportunity to capitalize on the NYC market and we better take advantage of it because as someone rightly pointed out, * what if Penn State/Michigan were to play there, I can only imagine how upset the posters on this board would be!
+ That would be you and anybody who likes this post going forward.

% A game a year! You, sir (and again anybody else who agrees) are an idiot if you think that is okay.

* And if either were dumb enough to give up a home game we would laugh at them too just like some of their fans are probably laughing at us now for this.

Unless the new practice facility is going to be named the George M. Steinbrenner Center I am still not sure why this is happening.

Pop of State College - 42K - Stadium size - 107K - Students 97K
Pop of Ann Arbor Michigan (UM) - 117K - Stadium size - 110K - Students 44K
Pop of Columbus Ohio (OSU) - 823K - Stadium Size - 105K - Students 65K
Pop of Piscataway - 50K + New Brunswick - 56K - Stadium Size - 53K Students - 66K

Seems to me there are plenty of people that go to games in State College and Ann Arbor who do not live in that city. We know Columbus is a large city but OSU has attendees from outside of there. So I don't understand why we need to play a football game in a baseball stadium in a different state. And by the way the population of Middlesex County is 829K about the size of Columbus Ohio. Nevermind that the population of NEW JERSEY, THE STATE RU REPRESENTS is 8.9MILLION. I am glad we are NYC team. But they can drive to us like so many other fans do of schools in the B1G. Or come on the train which I don't think you can do at those schools listed above. And at some point football games will become a major student event (20 to 30% attendance = 13.2K to 19.8K) and then we really won't want to move a game off campus. Supply and Demand. Keep the games in Piscataway. Keep it easy for students to attend. Keep it as a home field advantage. Build the brand further. And have schools scared about playing in OUR GARDEN!!!

I think if you asked another B10 fan from outside the NYC metro area, who is not a Rutgers fan, they would say probably the ballpark equal of what BrotherSkinny posted. Take some time, read other school boards view on RU entry and status in B10.If the B10 wants RU to play the game against a fellow B10 school IN nyc or Met Life,RU is in no postion, for first few years to say No..IMHO.Again..as an option,we can allways go back to the AAC.

So, after this game their view will change? If not, I fail to see how it matters at all what other Big Ten fan bases think about RU playing in Yankee Stadium. In fact, if they think this is the sort of thing a program like ours should be expected to do, that's a damn fine reason not to do it, as they view us a small time and this reinforces that image.

I think you should start acting like a B1G fan because guess what....we ain't going anywhere.

Please stop with the "we can go back the AAC" crap because I am pretty damn sure his lordship Master Delany is not going to say that if we say no to things like this.

We're here, and we've been here for awhile now. So start acting like it.

The only people who have any interest in this game being played in a replica of Yankee Stadium are Yankees fans. And I'm sure an enterprising journalist could FOIA emails & follow the money trail of which Yankee fan at Rutgers is whoring Rutgers football to their favorite baseball team and for how much.

Maybe after we win more then 4 games in B10 and get a full share of money, then we can start telling the B10 what we will,or wont do,IF this is what the B10 office wants.

Send a message to Delaney , just don't show up at Yankee Stadium. Actually Hobbs, being a lawyer, needs to find a loophole and tell Delaney he is experiencing such a backlash that he is using the loophole to politely say no to Yankee Stadium, or Met Life games.

If College football fans in NYC want to see RU play the Turtles at a baseball stadium in the Bronx and fill that baseball fields seats, Rutgers season ticket holders will gladly stay home so the uncommitted to any school NYC college football fans can buy seats should be the message Hobbs and the B1G gets.

Hopefully Hobbs won't be making that game part of the season ticket package but an add on option for those who want to go.

Doubt there would be as much backlash if a game were at MetLife. At least you can watch the game there, tailgate, and its in NJ!!

Some of you are borderline delusional.
There is zero evidence that the B1G or commissioner Delany had anything to do with this. It was a deal between Julie Hernan and the Yankees. Any thoughts that this is "our price to be in the B1G" are pure stupidity. There is only one price. That is to serve ourselves up to the Buckeyes and Wolverines et al each season. We are the Christians and they are the Lions. If we can rise up and defeat them, so much the better. In the meantime we bring healthy ratings in the NY market, and have ensured that cable subscribers in that market are paying their buck to BTN every month.

All this nonsensical talk of how this is what Delany wants or of how the B1G will market this game to the hilt are pure fantasy.

Prediction: This game will not be a sellout and TV ratings will be about the same as a Rutgers at Minnesota game.

I think many of you have no idea what Rutgers is selling. Hint: it's not the games. Not really. The real thing they are selling is the atmosphere and game day environment in Piscataway. Deals like this undermine that product.

If the idea is to play in Replica Yankee Stadium to boost NYC metro ratings, the best way for Rutgers season ticket holders to support the effort is to stay home & watch the game on tv.

I was going to let the stupidity of this post stand on its own merits, but since you went ahead and implied that I'm insane and a jackass, I'll go ahead and observe that this is one of the top ten most insane and jackass posts I've seen on this board.

No, the B1G does not charge new members by making them give up conference home games to play in overpriced interstate baseball stadiums with no tailgating and terrible sight lines for football. Luckily, Jim Delaney is also vastly more intelligent than giving up millions of media dollars by kicking Rutgers out of the conference over such a relatively trivial matter.

Delaney made it clear when RU joined the conference that the Big10 has never asked and never will ask a B10 team to schedule games in an off campus or neutral site against another B10 team. They treat all member schools equally with scheduling. This is just another ill informed argument.

Exactly so. We have the same media market and the same amount of eyeballs available no matter where we play this game. Putting this in Yankee Stadium delivers exactly 0% more market penetration than playing in Piscataway.

Also, this is not our 'price to pay'. In case you haven't noticed we've been in the Big Ten for a few years without having to do this, our media contract came up and the inclusion of our market farking blew the top off of the contracts. All of that happened without us giving up a home game, because the media market doesn't change when we move this game.
There is only one Yankee Stadium in the entire U.S. I agree it is not the ideal venue because of field issues, sight lines, and tailgating, but it is one of the most revered sports venues in the world. Rutgers fans are crazy if they do not think we should play one game a year in that venue. It is time we start acting smart and cede the advantages we have over every other school In the U.S. Again I ask what if the Yankees ink a deal with Notre Dame or god forbid Penn state for a long term yearly match up. The dopes on this board would be going batshit crazy if that was announced. Lets stop acting like dopes and think a little more long term strategy. This is one, long time Rutgers fan that would not mind one game a year in yankee stadium.

You are right JD would not kick RU out of the B1G over such a Trivial matter. Rutgers proximity to NYC is a unique marketing advantage that we should have been exploiting over the past 50 years. Unfortunately we didn't and are now in position to do so. Rutgers, unlike so many other schools actually could be NYC's college team of choice but it is a long term marketing proposition. I cannot wait for the day to see the Empire State Building lit up in Scarlet Red again!

One game a year? If that happens I can say with certainty I will drop my tickets. What, exactly do we get out of playing there? You can't fit more fans. You don't get more TV revenue. There is only one Yankee Stadium, there's one of every stadium, yet I can't think of a baseball field that is hosting one game a year for the local college team, and there are some pretty iconic stadiums around.

If ND wants to give up a home game to play there every year, good for them. I tend to think there's a reason they haven't done so, that reason being it's an awful idea.

Now if the Yankees want us to play there every year for a neutral site game. That would be fine.

Building a "brand" in NYC should be the last thing on RU's mind right now. This is a school that just made a huge conference upgrade with a roster that is not exactly built for the BIG 10. Let Ash build some momentum, get a firm hold on New Jersey, and then start worrying about RU's "brand." Until we get to the point that Harbaugh isn't cherry picking NJ's top 10 keep it in state.

We also did not expand our stadium to give up home games to smaller stadiums. Just really really odd and who the heck is making this call and more importantly, why?

.

BS
Have some backbone. We don't need to act like the Yankees bitch to kiss up to the B1G front office.
Was Nebraska forced to play home games away from Lincoln? No
Was Maryland forced to play in Camden Yards Baseball stadium ? No

The only beneficiaries of a RU game at Yankee Stadium is the $teinbrenner$ and the political arse kissing in the B1G office.

And now NU-Illinois own the Chicago market right? It brought them to the next level and brought in a ton of new fans and money? Oh, yeah, it did nothing at all for the long term prospects of either program. This is a paycheck game plain and simple. Any other excuse as to marketing and branding is transparent BS to cover up the money grab.

I never meant to infer it brought in new markets, took teams to the next level, brought in tons of money, or was a panacea for the teams involved. As a matter of fact, the game at Wrigley was awful. The point was, I don't remember any of the participating teams whining about it like I'm seeing here. It beats playing your conference games at places like Ypsilanti or Muncie.

I wasn't on their message boards at the time, but I would bet people were annoyed. Now imagine they had already played there multiple times, knew just how awful it would be, how little extra interest it would generate, and then they found out it was happening again, and some people were advocating for it to happen every year.

If this were the first game there I might be thinking, huh that's interesting and just be mildly annoyed. The problem here is we already know it is awful and can't sell out (ND/RU didn't sell out/ MD/RU doesn't have a prayer).

I get your irritation. These games can be entertaining, but it shouldn't happen every year and the best home games are on home fields. But, why isn't there a decent football venue in New York City? I've always wondered that. Real estate?

Well if the Rutgers administration thinks this is a good idea well good for them. Then again they are the same folks that named a building after a kid that jumped off a bridge. So hey their school, their rules. I'll be home.

I'm a lifelong Yankee fan and think this is the worst idea by Rutgers!

Wow! Lots of small thinkers on this board! Maybe not every year but RU has to use our proximity to NYC to its advantage. Regardless of the nattering nabobs of negativity on this board, RU should embrace NYC and run with it, not for the B1G but for Rutgers. Piscataway is great and I love our stadium but to the rest of the country NYC still has a cachet that Piscataway just does not have. Rutgers as one of the original colonial colleges and the birthplace of college football, our brand should be national. JMO.

Still waiting for a convincing argument as to what a game in the Bronx does to enhance our visibility in NY that is any different from playing in Piscataway. How do we become any more NY's team from playing MD in Yankee stadium?

Crickets. Nothing. There is no evidence that playing in YS will enhance our visibility and be a net positive for Rutgers Football.

Conversely, we know:
- the field conditions will suck
- sight lines also suck
- we lose home field advantage
- many loyal fans/alums/donors will be pissed off that we aren't playing in our home stadium on our campus
- season ticket holders will get way worse seats than they are used to, and donate for, compared to our stadium
- the B1G does not care about YS
- this whole YS thing smells like small time, we need wins at home to build a brand, not giving away home games. State Penn and ND don't give up home games to YS or elsewhere, for the above reasons.
- we are B1G and we are staying, let's act like it.

There are more, but those are the main arguments.

Sure does bear repeating.

The Rutgers Stadium game day experience >>>>>> any Yankee Stadium game day experience (we're talking for college football).

And all this crap about it being the price to pay for joining the B1G.. what a bunch of horsecrap. As has been noted many times, New Jersey itself represents the 5th largest TV market in the land. Bigger than all Big Ten TV markets save Chicago. We have already paid the price for entry.. or will have by the time they give us the full share.

We need to be selling the Rutgers campus gameday experience to all of New Jersey. This Yankee Stadium thing is a mistake. Maybe Giants/Jets Stadium since it is in New Jersey and maybe only then for special matchups.. not conference games. Come to think of it.. if this Yankee Stadium thing was a season opener of some huge name like Oklahoma, Texas, etc.. maybe I could see it.. but Yankee Stadium cannot have that since it is baseball season then. This is a mistake.
