Tyler Betsey

Every time I see/read something like the recent Charles Barkley piece on CBS, I think to myself that my brother was probably right all these years...Rutgers will never be able to be competitive in athletics with the blue bloods. Every change that has come along, NIL, portal, etc., seems to be something that makes our chance of sustained success evermore remote. Man, I hope Schiano can right the football ship (bus), but football is the toughest one to compete in. Somehow....GO RU!
That's because RU and/or RU fans tend to be late adopters to these trends. Fieldhouses were so 10+ years ago and RU still doesn't have one. Got to be out front if you want to play with the big boys.

Very true.
How many still want a "tough, Northeast, control the clock offense"?

The question is....
What is it now?
What will it be next year at this time?
What will it be in 3 years?
Your second two questions are like asking where will the stock market be next year and in 3 years? Nil May actually decline going forward. All I want to know is what is going rate for a 5 star recruit like Betsey?

They just have folks with a ton of money to throw around. It's depressing.

Isn't that what the other contenders for Ace Bailey are saying about Rutgers?
What Kentucky fans said about Wimsatt picking Rutgers over his home state school?

Pretty sure we're one of the "haves" in the NIL universe so far.

This is an NIL situation and Bama is the leader in the clubhouse. Not optimistic here.
Interesting… I always thought friendship with Dylan could sway things… guess not

Any uncommitted recruits you feel optimistic about?

I donated to the Rutgers giving day in the name of Rutgers basketball. Donated about 4 hours before the deadline after a 5 day campaign. Rutgers basketball had received about 13,000 dollars by then. Collectively, Rutgers had gotten a bit over 600,000 dollars in donation.

The bottom line is that Rutgers fans are cheap and not willing to open up their wallets for the most part. It's always been that way and it always will, I'm afraid.

Rutgers has 486,000+ living alumni
#8 according to this list
Ahead of us - almost all Big 10 universities (Cal Berkely is the exception)
Ohio State
UCLA
Michigan State
Michigan
Indiana
Penn State

Hopefully. The jury is still out somewhat.

The South and other factors about support for sports... There was a time when all "The East" was everything in college sports. Ancient times when dinosaurs roamed the earth compared to now... but that built a competitive spirit in so many states.. even Big Ten states... that felt the Eastern-dominated press and radio etc did not give them their due. This fueled the creation of bowl games and conferences and boosters and so on.

And in many of teh states the state universities were built by state pride for the same reasons. New Jersey did not have a state university until after WWII when they made a deal with Rutgers. I assume other eastern states had similar issues... so many old eastern private colleges already provided opportunities for the sons and daughters of wealthy families in eastern states.

Simply put.. it was just a different world. They have been paying athletes for a long long time. Once called "ringers", every big-name sports school did it.. again.. back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Then it became "illegal" according to the NCAA and some schools and conferences STILL did it.. brown bag payments, etc. Famous examples of it abound even in the 21st century.

Now it is NIL and "legal". But it is the places that have been doing it forever that still have all the advantages. They built their big name and tradition and huge fan base and donor class based on doing it for decades.

And since most of the money probably comes from business connections in one way or another.. it is the local businesses that must come up with eh money.. and be shown reasons to do so.. if we are to compete. But the ones interested in sports probably are better served buying suites in NFL and MLB and NBA venues.. which abound in the big cities.

In a big city like Atlanta, do you think Falcons tickets or UGA tickets will have more "clout" for business purposes? If UGA and Rutgers swapped campuses... NC winning UGA would do pretty well in NJ... but still.. the question of Eagles or Giants or UGA tickets would have some debate among local businesses. Meanwhile in Atlanta.. Rutgers in Athens would not out-draw GTech.

It is just the way it is. It is the way it always has been.

To me, NIL screwed things up. As paying players was likely to do. It is a return to the days when the big-money teams could just throw money around to win. They would have over a hundred scholarship players.. 4-stars stacked 5-deep on teh bench. The 85 schollie limit and 25 in a single year helped spread talent around... brought on some parity. Paying multi-millions for the best proven coaches and buying elite facilities tilted things toward the big money schools some more after the schollie limits... but now NIL.. that does it... and open transfers... they will have teh equivalent of the 100+ schollies again because they will just BUY players via transfer.

A surprise star emerges at Rutgers.. BUY HIM... force one of your players who did not turn out as well to transfer. You lose NIL money invested in him.. so what? You have more. meanwhile a Rutgers... they have to replace that kid with castoffs from elsewhere or train up a new hidden gem.

NIL and transfers equals CHAOS.. equals MAYHEM. Equals good times for front-runnin' fans.

Too bad. What does a NIL package look like for someone of Betsey’s caliber ?
The kid Dennis Evans (#11 ranking) from California who committed to Minnesota got $50k from them. I know this with 100% certainty. They did have concerns that they would lose him even though he signed his LOI, and sure enough, Louisville swooped in and paid more. I don’t know how much more though.

How does jumping ship after LOI work? Do you have to sit?

You have to ask the school for a complete release from the LOI. If they grant it, you don't have to sit a year. If they don't, you either have to sit a year, or you can file an appeal with the NLI committee, and then possibly file a second and final appeal if the first appeal is denied. If you aren't released from your LOI by the school and the committee appeals are denied, you also have the option to play JUCO or NAIA for one year instead of sitting out for the year...

Alabama has no pro sports. The Crimson Tide is like their Giants/Jets/Knicks/Nets all wrapped in one.
When you say that they have no pro sports are you including the football team ?
And apparently now the basketball team ?

Point blank…Rutgers has not cultivated a culture of alumni giving back to the school and it has hurt us over time. I know so many graduates who don’t donate a single dollar and have heard commentary of “I paid for my education there”.
On top of that, we really haven’t had magical seasons in sports where you get an influx of excitement to draw in massive donors/donations.
If we can land this monster recruiting class for 2024 and actually win(aka be a final four team at very least) I believe it will change our trajectory.
It seems like an easier path for basketball rather than football being that spark

Theirs includes their obscure satellite campuses as well.

Except Newark and Camden are no slouches academically. Newark is probably the best "satellite" campus in the country. It's better than a handful of state flagships.
