Tylin Oden, 6'5, 192 Hudl tape :

If next year is going to be a throwaway year, I would much rather throw it away towards the future than dealing with a 10 lbs bulkier Oden with 0 game experience next year leading to possibly another throwaway year, that is if Oden can prove himself to the coaching staff to be "at least" on par during the summer camp.

Based on the early success of Ash's 2017 recruiting thus far, I suspect we will see even more talented dual threat QBs rolling through here in the next few years so I think the need to redshirt Oden is somewhat overrated. To be lethal, this offense needs a QB who is a "constant" running threat, not just a QB who is "mobile" when he needs to be.

The Sooner we move away from Laviano and Rettig, the better. Initially, you spot Oden, but by mid-season he's the starter. Bring in Lewis the following year, and the beat goes on.

Btw, both Laviano and Rettig are redshirts, and it didn't help them one iota.

Only a person very close to the situation would be able to determine this.

I don't disagree. All things being equal, having Oden mature along with the rest of team seems more efficient.

I just think that (a) it's unlikely Oden's going to be ready, as a freshman, to perform well enough against Big Ten competition and (b) absent a year in a D1 strength and conditioning program, would it be too great a risk of serious injury to have Oden running wild against teams comprised of players with 3-5 years of strength and conditioning programs?

Oden seems very talented. But in the highlight vid, there were a lot of slow, bad tacklers and clueless DBs. Not going to be very many slow, bad tacklers or clueless DBs in the Big Ten East.

I trust Ash and crew to make the right decision and whatever that decision is, I'll support it.

our offense won't work as well without a run threat at QB - unfortunate but true. You can't run a read offense if the edge guys on defense don't have to worry about overcommitting to the handoff. Its a thin line between the quarterback being able to turn the edge and get up field and him getting blown up because he is a step slow.
I seriously don't think Rettig can do it. To me, its between Laviano and Gio. Two italian guys competing for the rutgers qb position, amazing lol

I was in the same boat as you, with respect to thinking Rettig can't run. But after one of his runs in the Spring game, I changed my mind. Nobody's mistaking either Laviano or Rettig for a Braxton Miller or a J.T. Barret. But they have shown an ability to make yards beyond the LOS when the yards are there to take.

mildone,
rettig isn't slow, I agree. But the speed necessary for running the spread is different. Its the type of speed where a guy chooses a run path and then on a dime needs to put a foot in the ground and change his angle. Don't get me wrong, I hope he can do it. I hope Laviano could do it. I hope Dare could do it.

6'5" 180 even if he puts 10 lbs on by September is STILL too skinny - IMHO - to start against Big Ten D's in the 2nd half of the season. He's gonna get pummeled out there this isn't freakin' high school. This is a HIGLIGHT reel, remember that, the kid more than likely has a long way to go mentally, as well as physically, so don't be surprised if he's RS'd from Day 1 if Coach feel the same way. No way in hell is Ash going to rush him onto the field of play "just because" posters on a message board think that's what should be done.

Sorry, didn't mean that to sound like "the little lights aren't twinkling, Clark." Just was wondering if there were more.

As with all things, the coaches will make the right call on Oden.
It's cool. I didn't take it bad...there were a bunch of articles and I must have copied wrong one. There was actually a good bleacher report one but I didn't want to deal with the bleacher report isn't real posts.

Savage had much better passing stats. That being said, Savage was impressive in camp settings and got recruited because he looked good in tee shirt and shorts.

Savage 1268 yds 10 TD's 94/181 51%
Oden 750 yds 9 TD's 54/92 59%

Savage had a stud WR that went to OSU. Oden has his brother who is a sophomore

Oden plays if he can throw the ball as consistently as Laviano or Rettig, which does not look to be too high of a bar.

His body weight will play no factor.

You do realize the guys in the NFL right now. Right. So I would say he had the talent as well when he was recruited. His head, well that took a little time to get screwed on straight.

Women. Who needs 'em. Pffft.

Great talent and I hope he contributes early, but he can not hold the ball that long at this level. That is going to take him some time to get used to.

Oden's brother has multiple SEC offers as a sophomore and Corey Brown played rb in high school way more than wr.

How can you state this? Based on what? Opinion or do you have some inside information?

If I showed you highlight videos of Rettig and Laviano you would be saying they didn't need a red shirt and could start right away. There are two major reasons why most college qbs redshirt and those can not been seen on a highlight film. Most have the physical tools to play but aren't able to pick up the complexity of college offenses or adjust to the speed of the college game. These can't be seen on film and are tough to determine how they will do. Going from high school football to college football is like asking a guy who has only built shed to go build a house. The job is so much more complex and most need a year or two to practice and observe before they are ready to do it themslelves. Those who are more prepared typically come from high school program with a sophisticated passing offense. This is a major warning sign the Oden probably not going to be ready. In high school he threw the ball less than 12 times a game. I am sure he was not asked to do things in the passing game he will be asked at Rutgers. It rediculous for people to say he will probably start. The odds are strongly against him. This doesn't mean he won't be a great qb but chances are very slim he ready as a true freshmen.

Just my opinion. If he's running the offense better than Laviano or Rettig do you really need think Ash won't play him because he's too skinny? Rettig isnt exactly the most physical or strongest on the team but I don't think that matters.

whether Ash uses him this fall - or not - will depend on a number of things - many will be beyond the direct comparisons with Laviano & Rettig -
Much will depend on a wholistic view of the state of development of the offense - maybe Oden is clearly individually better - but if the team has not fully climbed to a level where Oden's superiority will produce significantly different results - and if basically similar outcomes will be obtained with a 'serviceable' Laviano or Rettig - and if the success in the coming year is going to depend upon fiercely engaging in scrappy hand-to-hand combat, scavenging for every yard, huffing & puffing to achievements of brutal pure will rather than skill
- Ash may look at a red shirt year - rich in practice, repetition, nourishment and growth - as a better 'big picture / long term' use of Oden .

If he is redshirting he is not going to get reps in practice once the season starts.
