UConn gave Mighty Maine all they could handle

The Hartford Courant reported:

There were some painful sights and sounds early Thursday night as UConn settled — gently, conservatively — into another football season. There was a two-thirds empty stadium at kickoff, a quarterback getting his helmet knocked off and the booing disapproval of fans, many of whom trickled into Rentschler Field at various times during the first half.

I hope Uconn understands that the reason that we are busting their chops is not because we actually care at all about them but rather because of their stupid making a mountain out of a molehill nonsense of twitter.

UCONN vs Maine - back the future Yankee Conference

UCONN and UMASS should just give up already and put the band back together. This was one great conference

But their obnoxious fans will keep lecturing about how they "deserve" to be in the P5.

I had no idea they were playing until I saw the posts here. Tuned into the AAC network (aka ESPN3) to continue testing Chromecast which I just set up in preparation for our opener. It was actually a good game (which, of course, isn't good news for UConn fans). That said, everyone should be cautious about drawing too many conclusions from the first game, whether we're talking UConn, Tennessee, Indiana or USCe.

Didn't Wash St lose their opener to Portland St last year yet rebounded the following week to beat us (a team that crushed Norfolk St the previous week)? Wash St. ended up having a pretty good season as I recall whereas we did not.

I'll predict right now that the mighty pound puppies make it all the way to 4 wins this year and can kiss their Big 12 hopes goodbye LOL. They looked like a poor man's FCS team last night. If they'd have played a legit team they'd have gotten crushed.

You know, I do recalls when we were having a hard time against Norfolk State one year. We've been there.

UCONN not being in a P5 conference illustrates that more people care about college football than basketball, mens or womens, and it's not even close. I loved college basketball growing up and still think it's superior to the NBA product but I personally have absolutely no passion for basketball whatsoever at either level approaching a decade and a half now and I know many others who feel the same way. College football is religion down south, in the midewest and Texas/great plains. Basketball is something to keep you busy between bowl season and spring practice. Conversely, football is not big in New England outside of the Patriots. Hockey means more than college football up in that region.

Agree - it would be good to see a FBS level NEC formed.

UConn
UMass
Temple
Buffalo
Army
Villanova - call up
Maine - call up
Stony Brook - call up
Delaware - call up
Georgetown - call up

Why bother having to meet the seat requirements and play in half empty ball yards.
Seems to me like much more fun filling your 18 thousand seat stadiums and keeping it a cozy 1aa event. Saves the school millions of bucks as well

Question...
If we were still stuck in the AAC, having to live your life praying for a P5 offer or playing in a nice cozy stadium against Maine, Villinova and UNH or the like, what would you choose?

I'd go back to our roots and play at the FCS level. The Group of 5 is like purgatory. At least in FCS you can play for a legit national championship. In the Group of 5 you hope you can play in a decent 2nd tier bowl game. Problem is we'd never fill the stadium again.

thats a nice league.

The RU Hater types in NJ still wants to go back to playing Cornell and Colgate

Yeah well that ship sailed when we accepted the Big Ten's invitation. Even if we don't ever compete in the major sports, the cash flow to the university and the state is too much to turn their back on. We would essentially become what the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals were before their recent resurgences. There for the paycheck.

Uconn isn't going anywhere, they bring ZERO for football and football drives the bus. They bring nothing to the table other than mens and womens bball and that is not enough. Even the ACC would be hard pressed to add them if someone defected

bad football and dirty basketball and shithole fans...they deserve where they are.

I no longer care about Cuse, havent thought about BC in a long time but damn, I will always love to see UConn struggle and never make it to a P5 conference
