Guesses at how many RU fans show for the UM game at MSG? Will RU outnumber UM?

I’m amazed that UM gave up their home game for this. I get the exposure and all, but the travel and proximity to RU has to be tough.

Question when I went to get tickets it showed no seats in the 300’s is it possible they are only selling the lower bowl?

It’s part of the rotation - the first time Michigan was in it, they were the away team (against PSU). For us, we were the home team (against Wisconsin). So, this time we get to be the away team and they have to be home. Next year, when we play MSU, we are the home team

Next year do we play MSU at MSG? And we are giving up a B1G home game to do so?

They’re priced down now at $35 plus fees at ticketmaster

I don’t think they had a choice just like Rutgers didn’t have a choice against Wisconsin a few years ago.
Thankfully for us in Rutgers' case, MSG is nearby and essentially local so giving up a home game is still not as much of a sacrifice as other schools have to make. It would suck for Rutgers to be forced to play a home game out in the midwest even though that's never happening. All about NYC penetration/visibility for the B1G.

there will be more UM fans than RU fans in the building IMO. We were brutally outnumbered by Wisconsin fans at the garden, i'm talking at least 75/25, it was bad. We have lazy fans who can't take a train and literally walk up a set of stairs after getting dropped off below the arena

There's no doubt we'll outnumber um fans at msg. I'd guess 2 to 1.

i don’t think we’ll be even close to that...unless we get a lot of help from wrestling fans.

Even though this is an away game I don’t get why Rutgers hasn’t been promoting this at all home games at the RAC.

Rutgers fans can rally and show up but as a whole we’re usually slow to react and need a little pushing.

Sorry, but you'll be wrong on this. When RU is good, our fans show up, like we did when we owned MSG in our NIT run, against both Iowa State and Michigan. We have 8 going and we only have 4 season tickets. I assume this will be the story for many.

I don't think you understand the UM NYC presence. We have more alums in NYC for sure but they have more alums who care. This is the only michigan game most of them will go to all year, we have 25+ between football and bball every year.

This is when they have to knock the dust off to show everyone theyre big bad UM alums

Were you there in 2004? If not, you have no clue what you're talking about. We were about 3:1 vs. UM fans in the NIT finals.

I hear ya but if so many cared the lower bowl would be long sold out and they’d be opening the upper level.

A lot different.

In 2004 Rutgers hadn’t been to the tourney in 13 years so the NIT finals was huge. I’m sure most UM fans thought they were above the NIT and had no interest in going.

This is a home for UMich and Rutgers hasn’t really promoted this game other than to season ticket holders.

I think we’ll have more fans than them...but no way do we double them.

yeah. But that was the NIT final. This is just a regular in-season conference game. And Rutgers fans can attend 10 other regular in-season conference games 35 miles away at the RAC. It isn't the same kind of draw as the NIT final.

But this is one of 3 games that Michigan fans can attend within 400 miles of New York. If you are a Michigan basketball fan in Boston, this is your best opportunity to see them play.

Perfect storm..i cant believe its 16 years since then..at that point we were just 13 years removed from the ncaa
Depressing, although back then we weren't nearly as bad as we were post-Waters. Bannon got off to a good start, including the closest we've been to making the Dance in the last 29 years, in 98-99, but he unfortunately imploded with the stupid naked FT shooting scandal. After that, Waters had some good teams including that 2004 NIT final team, but also couldn't get over that NCAA hump. And then the horrible years under Hill, Rice, and Jordan, ugh. I want this team to make the NCAAs so badly I can taste it - they're capable, but it's a friggin' tough conference. Also, for those who have no idea what the RU fanbase is capable of at MSG, here's an excerpt from the Times story below:

"The atmosphere inside the Garden had the feel of a big game. With many of the 16,064 in attendance clad in Rutgers red, the game was a virtual home game for the Scarlet Knights from New Jersey."

Ok, perhaps not 2:1 RU, but I'll be stunned if we don't outnumber them, which is a far cry from kyk's implied 3:1 UM to RU ratio.

It will probably be close to 50:50, especially if Rutgers continues to win and generate excitement. But the game at MSG is pretty expensive compared to games at the RAC, which is a deterrent for casual fans who have the more economical option of watching Rutgers at the RAC.

Rutgers at the Garden, being outnumbered?? Not gonna happen, no way!! Rutgers fans love to see us play games at the Garden and IF it's close, you'll all hear and see that it will be very loud support of RU!!

Unfortunately I have heard this complaint from many. :(. I'm surprised at that as I know from our big east days that big games at MSG are AMAZING!

I think the lower bowl is more than half of the capacity that MSG holds....it's a Saturday and not a weeknight. I cant see how RU fans who are not necessarily guaranteed to get into the RAC for a fair price the rest of this home slate, don't go to NYC for a high caliber opponent.

I think the prices are a concern and traveling to NYC is going to be a concern cost wise if you're not looking to spend a couple of hundred bucks that day (tickets included for 2 people, train or parking and something to eat/drink.

I think getting Indiana tomorrow night will set the table for fans to rally and get behind this event. You don't need to promote this game, it promotes itself.

Agree that we will need to maintain momentum throughout the rest of January but there will be more RU fans than Michigan. My colleague is not attending, he doesn't respect RU. He would go if it were Michigan Duke or UNC. Just wait until RU goes on a run and you'll understand what fan base showed up.

Disagree.

This is a chance to add another home game to the schedule by taking over MSG.

The Rutgers AD should be promoting the hell out of this game...and not just to season ticket holders.

How exactly is this game promoting itself?

We have a solid contingent of die hards who are in the know but we have thousands of casual fans that need to be tapped into and pushed for a game like this.

Lower bowl tickets look to be about 75% or more sold. Should be fun.

Wasn't clear - what time does wrestling start/finish and what time does the game start?

We have 3 season tickets and for this we are bringing a group of 9. Treating it as an event and a way to get my parents into the big bad city.
