Was talking to someone in Rutgers tickets sales

I was involved 2004-2006. It was going on before that though. Within our own program it was poorly managed. Our president would purchase the 50 tickets and hand them out the night before or the day of the game with little or no notice.
Was not hard to organize, we had 100% for our team and a nice turnout for the rest of the program.A great experience for the kids, the parents had blast too.

That’s great . So it looks like your involvement from 2004 to 2006 it was a good experience for most involved. Nice to hear stories like that

The last one with Danny breslaur and Jon Newman.
OK. I listened again. Hobbs never said that Ash was going to get it done or anything of the sort. He said the team was young and that 32 players with significant amounts of playing time were freshman and sophomores. He said that he expected RU to "make some noise," whatever that means. Maybe we have different interpretations of what "make some noise" means. That could be singing or farting.

The impression I got from the podcast was that last season didn't meet expectations, that the experience gained last year by very young players should make a difference on the field this year and that we need to show measurable improvement.

I think Hobbs gets it. I think that 4 to 6 wins this year would keep Ash on the payroll but another 1 (or 2) win season sends him back to the cornfields.

I had the opportunity to speak with Sarah for a few moments in Pittsburgh. While I was extremely respectful and complementary to the job her and Pat have done, I made it very clear that results aside, I don't think the football coach has a healthy respect for NJ, Rutgers nor has a pulse on the fan base.

Out of respect, I won't reveal her response but my gut tells me the truth lies closer to what you are saying.

I can count on one hand the number of times I've spoken to Pat - but at least two of those conversations were 30+ minutes in length. And I know Sarah pretty well. One thing I can say, definitively, is that there's zero chance they don't get the sense of urgency. They do.

What the hell is he supposed to say at this point? "Yea, we hope he comes through but we know there are doubts". I'm sure that would go over well.
Exactly right. But his comments on that podcast were even more measured than the "ringing endorsement" Julie gave Kyle when Kyle was extended.

It would not be wise for Hobbs to say anything more or that Ash is living on borrowed time, as this would kill any stain Ash has on the recruiting trail.

And key phrase is "should make a difference." Not what Hobbs said, but that sounded like the takeaway to me too.

My wife had a similar conversation with Sarah

He’s going to own a lot of cornfields thanks to us.

I have said before that while on the surface, firing Ash after last season would have been justified and would have made the fanbase happy. On the other hand, given the financial situation (both the B1G share and the money owed to Ash) and the fact that the program was in bad shape and severe decline when Ash took over, any prospective coach looking to come to Rutgers after Ash might think that 3 years was not enough time to see results. Yes, we SHOULD expect to see linear results- 2-10, 4-8, and then maybe 5-7 and 6-6.
But the loss of BOTH Gus Edwards and Robert Martin and Janarion Grant were huge losses to the offense, as was breaking in a Freshman QB. Yeah, excuses, excuses.

The excuses are over. Ash has had time to recruit and develop a QB. Same with WRs. The running backs are there this year in at least Pacheco and Blackshear, and probably the younger Young. Hopefully, Robinson's move to WR helps the WR situation, and one of the veterans (Melton, Lewis, Jones) steps up, or a newbie (Lacewell or King or Hunt) steps over them and produces.

The excuses are over. Time to put up or shut up.

never going to work for Ash ,even to get to.500 with the lack of talent and depth on both sides of the line, due to sub power 5 recruiting. You cant run an offense without a line, and the defense front brings zero pressure, has little to no depth or talent. Some programs are able to develop marginal talent, but Ash and this staff cant do that.
Time was up last year but Barchi/Hobbs think it was financially better to suffer the revenue loss of tens thousands of cancelled season tickets and other revenue vrs keeping Ash one more year and driving the program further into the ground.
Sad state of affairs.

This has been my experience as well. I have spoken with Hobbs on 2 occasions in a small group setting. He is well informed and passionate about RU sports. Both conversations were broad and general in nature. When the conversation swayed toward football is when his mannerisms and overall confidence swayed. His words did not match his body language and facial expressions. He knows he has to get this thing figured out.

So, Pat, about the football team, what are your thoughts?

Maybe Hobbs should take microeconomics 101 at Rutgers and be taught the concept of sunk costs.

This thread is a depressing read with everyone’s conversations with rutgers officials . My takeaways in regards to rutgers football is either Hobbs doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing or Hobbs really really doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing .

This isn’t a case of saying the right thing. This is a case of confidence that Ash is going to get it done.

He made a bad hire and made it five times worse with the contract. Given all that, he's now just trying to buy time. Every two weeks that is one less guaranteed check Ash has remaining, and it is two weeks closer to a higher league revenue for Rutgers. Hobbs is betting that those two things will outweigh the loss of fans.

The first sentence of the previous paragraph, he failed. It won't be known if the decision Hobbs made to bring back Ash was the correct one until we get the numbers for the next five years -- how many wins, how many fans, how much revenue. Right now, the early returns (lost tickets) are likely not good.

We have agreed on a lot, but not sure if the contract made it 5 times worse. Maybe 50% worse.

An extension when a team receives sanctions for the actions of the previous coach is fairly standard.
What is a little off in this instance is that Rutgers basically voluntarily proposed sanctions, which the NCAA was happy to impose.

private conversations with hobbs or sarah mean $hit--they will always be respectful but merely to calm the beast-if they do otherwise they shouldn't be here

Greg Schiano after 3 years:
Conference: Big East
Récord: 8-27

Let's be fair here. Yes Greg had perhaps an easier schedule compared to Ash, but Greg had a Patriot League Level football team when he first got here as well. As inept as Flood was, the cabinets weren't as bare as people made them out to be.

Well that’s your opinion. I have mine. There’s nothing to argue over.

Ok, I'll bite ;)

I've spoken with coaches in other sports and administrators. My "opinion" is based in reality. Also, I don't assume people like Hobbs think in two dimensional or binary terms.

You place teams like Ohio State and Michigan on "upset alert" and predict 10 win seasons and claim guys like Sitkowski are Heisman candidates. That is an "opinion" based in fantasy.

Not trying to be an ass. Many consider you to be a stand up guy in real life who is passionate about RU football. I just think at some point your persona online would be enhanced if you stopped being "RutgersAl" and just posted as Al the real person.

I don’t think we need to wait 5 more years to see if retaining ash was correct. I can tell you the answer right now .

It is the the same old, same old. And that’s why we are where we are.

The impression I get, is that Ash is his guy, and he’s going to stand up for him.

Those of us who have had 1:1 conversations with both him and his 2nd in command see it differently. You might want to internalize that.

If Hobbs and Sarah really believe ash isn’t the guy , then they should have fired him. A good leader does not leave an incompetent guy at the wheel in his/her organization.

RU4Real is full of sht. Ash is 100% his guy.
from you, who predicts 10 win seasons under Asherror?

Another way of looking at it is that since Hobbs kept Ash at end of 2018 season, approx $2.2 million in revenue has been lost.

If true, isn't that just the break-even point for RU's cash-strapped athletic Department? If Ash was canned RU would still have to pay him roughly his $2M+ and his staff's guaranteed payouts. That has to be at least equal the $2.2M in lost revenue you are talking about. RU would also then have to pay at least $3M for a new HC given the situation of the program. Plus a new staff. So, RU still saved millions by retaining Ash. If money were no object, firing Ash was a no-brainier. But, when money is so tight, Hobbs may have made the only real choice he had.
