What happened on the near interception in first half that was ruled a fumble?

From where I was seated it looked like the MD QB was hit while throwing and our LB I believe just missed INT. Then there was a review and suddenly MD had the ball with a gain of about 4 or 5 and it was still 3rd down ( at least that is what we thought in my rows ). Ash seemed irate! what did the announcers say?

Lumar’s Helmet knocked the ball out of the QB’s hand. Then his hand moved forward and the ball went forward in the air. No one jumped on the ball. Just left it on the ground. If we grabbed it we would have had the ball. Ended up being a fumble that no one recovered. Maryland got the ball at that spot.

Yes, it was a fumble--but looked very much like a forward pass.

The "dying duck" fumble just fell through Douglas' hands.. and the ref immediately blew the whistle for incomplete pass.... all Douglass had to do was pick up the ball..but he left the ball on the ground.... (now I know why defenders should ALWAYS pick up a ball after any incomplete pass!) you can hardly blame Douglas or Roberts (who was also nearby)... if they had only held the ball for a second, we would have been given possession.

after review- officials could tell it was a fumble. but NO ONE took over possession of the loose ball.. so they called it a dead ball at that spot and gave MD 4 yards...which may be correct--but was even more maddening!!!

...and if there was an official review..why didn't they give the timeout back to RU?

Biggest problem of the play:

The side judge next to the ball, with 3 RU defenders there, was waving his hands "side-to-side" - calling it incomplete - which kept our defenders from grabbing the damn ball (their own fault...).

Shouldn't matter..ignore the ref's / JUMP ON IT. Then let the replay prove them right or wrong!

If a Rutgers player had scooped up the ball and started heading toward the endzone, I guarantee the refs would have immediately blown the whistle to prevent Rutgers from getting an easy TD.

Assuming one of our guys just fell on the ball we would have gotten it On their 21

As it turned out we got the ball on their 49 and then a field goal shortly thereafter when they punted

So the play winds up a difference of 28 yards of field position. But we did get points

one thing I see different is unlike years past where GS would never let the players put the ball on the ground (i.e. hand it to the ref)....these guys don't. Believe both Hester and Gus just dropped it in EZ after scoring.

it seems very obvious to me that in a case like this, since the ref signaled incomplete, the play should be dead and the ball should be placed at the original LOS.

same as other situations...you can't undo the whistle bc players stop playing.
