Just thinking it's gotta suck to be a football fan but not a bball fan. Awesome first half at least, but ends in a disaster as usual against any good teams. Can't wait for basketball to start. So much more winning. So much more fun.

Curious how much crossover there is from the football fans?

I was all in RU football. Went to all the bowls. One year went to every game (road games included) but one. Had 8 seats with 2 in the Audi club.

pulled the plug 4-5 years ago and haven’t looked back. Watched a few plays yesterday, but was more interested in World Series.

4 hours is way too long and most importantly the losing was unbearable.

Yup. My freshman year was 2006. That should've made me a diehard football fan for life. I didn't even attend a basketball game during my time on campus. Meanwhile I played football in high school and put hundreds of hours into the NCAA video games.

Part of why I'm a much much bigger basketball fan now has to do with my general opinion of the two sports, but I still watch plenty of other college football and NFL. I just can't get invested in Rutgers football when I know what the outcome will be, and the process to get there is not fun. Was anyone actually pumped up about the Indiana win?

I became a bigger basketball fan during the Mike Rice years so it's not like I need the team to be good to tune in, but at least those Rice teams generally showed some promise.

Right now - I’d bet the percentage is very low if you define fan as someone who at least keeps track of how well the team does and watches the big games. 6 years ago not so much.

In general - commiting to follow a football team through rough times is easier than a basketball team. There are only 12 games to begin with and it hasn’t been like under Ash where the season was over by the second game with blow out losses to Buffalo. The first quarter of the season we were 3-0. Technically - we can still make a bowl game even now. In the dark days of basketball - the season was often over after a handful of conference games as we had lost too many games for even an NIT bid to be in reach.

I'm a fan of both. I make an effort to watch most of our football games, usually on a slight delay to skip commercials and save time. Under Ash, that wasn't always the case.

Under Jordan, I lost hope and would turn to our game for a minute or two to see if we were competitive that night or not. I did not watch a lot of our games for a few years. Now I follow every game again, although I'm still too cheap to shell out for Big Ten+.

I'm out of state, and have not seen a game at the RAC in many years.

I was at Rutgers from 03-07. I went to every home game by hook or by crook. Immediately bought seasons after I graduated. Went to bowl games and road games and all that fun stuff. Kept my seasons until 15 or 16. Between getting married, having kids, and having the product on the field being awful it just fell by the wayside.

Schiano has drawn me back into watching when I can. Even brought my kids to the Wagner game this year. That being said I have basketball seasons now and use all my goodwill with my wife to go to all those games vs football games

Since my senior year in High School (Fall of ‘84) and the when I put on the Marching band uniform Fall of ‘85… same with hoops despite Littlepage…

I moved to Texas for work in ‘93 so it was hard to keep up with both until the internet made things easier.

With our entrance into the B1G and BTN+ I’ve watched a whole lot more of ALL programs!!

I'm more of a basketball fan than a football fan, but the football games are much easier to get to these days because they are always on weekends or Friday nights. If I bought season basketball tickets, I'd end up selling half or more of them every year anyway.

Now that the kids are older, we may be able to get to some more weekday evening games, but they also conflict with practices for their own sports. A lot of times I end up watching the basketball games on a delay once the kids are in bed.

This should be pretty easy for anyone who knows what JK and I have done over the past 20 plus years, but we do also have football seasons as well.

Honestly, we go for half the season, wait for the games to become largely unwinnable/hard to watch (usually around the start of hoops), then shift our focus to where our hearts truly sit…with basketball.

We attended Wagner, Temple, Iowa and Indiana. That’s probably a wrap for us

I think there are way more football fans than basketball . Even that we stink in football and are good/respectable in hoops.
That’s just a guess . There is a reason the football statistic is 50k and basketball arena is 8k .
But there is a lot of crossover and obviously a site like this you get the diehards
OP are you a football fan ? I see you way more on the basketball side here it seems.

Started getting season tix to both football and basketball about 10 years after graduation. In 1990 I had 12 seats for football and 8 seats for basketball in my name.

Over the years that number was reduced to 4 seats for each sport, and by 2012 or so I dropped my season tickets to football altogether. Instead my friends and I would just buy tickets to individual games.

Meanwhile I’ve kept the 4 bball seats, all through the 30-year NCAA drought. My son has them now, since I moved to FL 4 years ago.

I’m still a fan of both, and I would summarize my fandom like this: The thrill of rooting for my alma mater is everlasting. The joy I get from it might come from one good play, one good game, or one good season, and the start of each play, game, and season is another opportunity to feel that sense of anticipation, elation, and pride.

Said this the other day…

I am proud alum and fan of all things Scarlet. Be them on the field or in the classroom.

I want good things to happen to the University on a whole and I don’t care who is behind it.

The top of the letterhead is more important to me than the current signature at the bottom.

That being said, I was there way before, here during and will still be here way after.

My team is on the floor” - Norman Dale
Love it all. If it wears Scarlet, I follow and cheer for it.

I have friends that didn't go to college. A handful of them became RU supporters during GS 1.0, since they did enjoy football, tailgating and some amount of Jersey Pride.

Those same friends have 0 interest in basketball. After the Purdue win I got comments like "what does that mean, does that mean they are the champions of anything?" and "the only thing I care less about than basketball is college basketball". I don't imagine my friends are unique.

It's anecdotal but I would bet a beer there a good amount of non-RU alum who will casually support/root for football but not basketball. However I also suspect a lot of them aren't even back in the fold and won't be until start winning B1G home games and get to .500 or better.

How do you define “fan”? I think at least 95% of the population of RU football fans tuned in to root for the team in March Madness.

I root for all RU teams. Football is the best sport obviously but I do love RU hoops. Other sports are pretty boring but I always like to see RU win.

Look I’m a huge college basketball fan in general but realistically the gap between the percentages is going to be higher for the big time schools. Most of our fans are actually connected to the university in some way. They may follow football more but they still root for the basketball team.

We’re not Notre Dame where our football team has a national following. Or even PSU who has a regional following. Lots of their fans never went to the school but simply support the football program. Those types of fans usually don’t care at all about the other sports.

You gotta figure whoever is left as a football fan is probably a diehard RU supporter. And therefore is likely emotionally invested all sports at RU. We don’t have any bandwagoners to just hitch along for one team or another right now.

I think most fans here are just Rutgers fans. If football turns the corner and becomes very good year in and out, many basketball fans would go to those games too. I’ve always been a basketball fan first but 2006-2012 had me more interested in Rutgers football for sure. I would still go to basketball but but there wasn’t a lot of excitement.

This is true. When Football was great Basketball was not but the one difference is we never have many away fans at our Hoops games because the RAC is so tiny. It’s also loud as hell in there which is a huge advantage. Looking forward to both teams winning on a regular basis in the very near future.

I think THIS and the TOS has a lot more crossover fans than the total population because it’s for die hards.

Never really got into bball until the Pike era started. Used to be a fb season ticket holder, now I’m a bball season ticket holder. Can’t wait for tomorrow.

Will probably get back to season tickets next year for fb after dropping them in 2019.

I think I went to one RU basketball game that I can remember as an undergrad but I was dragged there. I started watching hoops in 2009 after I graduated and basically went to 1-2 games a year with friends, co-workers. I go to a couple each year, watch all the games on TV.

Football I have had season tix since 2009. I also go to the occasional gymnastics meet or wrestling. Might do volleyball too soon since my daughter is going to be 6' tall in all likelyhood..

I’m a fan of all Rutgers sports.
In the moment the BIG baseball tournament, getting snubbed from the NCAA TOURNAMENT was equally painful to losing in mens lacrosse, women’s soccer, women’s field hockey and basketball losing to ND last year.
All equal in interest and pain of losing

STH for football and men's basketball since 1994. Wrestling STH since 2015.

Attend women's hoops games when RU is ranked and its opponent is ranked... which, unfortunately, hasn't happened in years.

Both and BTW: 10 years ago it was opposite regarding success of programs.

Yea, I'm a football fan. I was lucky enough to be a student during the Leonard Rice glory years.

I've always been active on both boards. Football I'm starting to care less and less about though honestly. We just never can score enough points to upset any good team. Recruiting falling off. Offense is just so painful to watch its had to get excited. I do like the defense Brown and Gavin so there is some hope for the future. Schiano's top secret BS is a fan engagement killer too. I helped lead the charge to get Schiano back and was even cited in an article about it

Pike is just the best. He's my favorite coach ever now. The basketball program is just being run amazingly. The team is soooo fun to watch and follow. Last few seasons just unreal entertainment value. The better the bball program is the less fun football is by comparison. I'm so much more excited for bball than football these days. It's not remotely close

I live in San Diego so don't get to go to games but I'll be back all December and going to a bunch of games at the RAC. I can't freaking wait. Last time I went to a football game Wisconsin blew us out in the first quarter. Stadium empty. Wisconsin fans being obnoxious. It was terrible

I'll be bringing the Rutgers superfan costume with me so you might see me there. If anyone on the boards spots me and wants to say hi feel free

What is the superfan costume? Is that like the RU equivalent of green man? red man?

Good post. I think of you as a great basketball fan . You know a lot about the team and I enjoy your input and back and forth (especially since I am always right lol). You were in San Diego last year for Notre dame games . Do you live there or just went there hoping we would advance ?

I’ve been a football season ticket holder since I graduated in 2011 and a basketball ticket holder a year after Pikiell took over because I really believed he was going to be the guy to turn the program around I wanted to get in on some decent tickets before it was too late.

Some family and friends think I’m crazy for not only being a die hard Rutgers atheltics fanatic but driving 60 miles up the Turnpike 20 + times a year to watch football and basketball games.

I was extremely close to pulling the plug on my football tickets until we rehired Schiano. It still hasn’t been easy but the fun is slowly returning.

With that said there’s been nothing like the past 3-4 years at the RAC under Pikiell - we’ve had some incredible games and atmospheres and it’s been so much fun experiencing the build and growth of the program. Easily the best and most memorable window of my 20ish years of being a Rutgers fan.
